Some 26 WWI uboats were brought into the Medway and abandoned where they presumably remain under the mud to this day.

The just cut the USS Orion into scraps here in Baltimore about 2 years ago. One fella I work with on the Torsk was a crewman on the USS Orion. He hated to see her go.

We are allowed to do ship strips for parts on the Torsk. Many of the same parts were used across the ships/subs. Other than that these are auctioned to be cut up or used to create an artificial reef.

Some are still in good shape Jim. They get mothballed but are still loaded with toxins that pollute. The James River fleet has been complained about for years. Those that are on the block for sale to scrapyards are opened evey now and then for stripping of items. A group from the Torsk Volunteer association will make a trip to strip what parts we can use on the Torsk. Some get salvaged and used as a museum. Others sold for scrap that usually make razor blades.

I would drive by the USS Coral Sea in Baltimore everyday as she was scrapped for blades.

is that a bunch of beer bottles on the horizontal stab?I see a bunch of wood blocks or parts of the boat on the stern planes, but nothing resembling a bottle. Also note the dumpster placed on the hull. $20 says it ended up at the bottom of the drydock the slightly humorous yet extremely dangerous way.:dead:

I recall there being some issues in making non-playables playable. However, it is cool that someone got a start on that submarine already. Might be about time to reinstall the old beast (DW) and see what new stuff I can add to her. Thanks for the heads-up, TLAM. :salute:

Its sad too see those Fleet Boats go...but they're nearly 70 years old...way beyond their useful life. with that much metal fatigue i'm guessing its dangerous to go much below periscope depth!

It is sad to see ships come to the end of their lives and being cut up for scrap. The Australian navy has made it a policy of late to offer retired ships as artifical reefs to any community who wants one. It has gone well, except for one or two occasions, and there is usualy a fight to see who gets one!

It is also a more honourable way for a ship to go.

This would be appropriate for this thread:

Old Ironsides By Oliver Wendell Holmes

Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;
Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon’s roar;—
The meteor of the ocean air
Shall sweep the clouds no more!

Her deck, once red with heroes’ blood
Where knelt the vanquished foe,
When winds were hurrying o’er the flood
And waves were white below,
No more shall feel the victor’s tread,
Or know the conquered knee;—
The harpies of the shore shall pluck
The eagle of the sea!

O, better that her shattered hulk
Should sink beneath the wave;
Her thunders shook the mighty deep,
And there should be her grave;
Nail to the mast her holy flag,
Set every thread-bare sail,
And give her to the god of storms,—
The lightning and the gale!
