The "Pad Fuehrer", Guenter Wendt, passed away. A man who made space a lot safer for the first to go there.

Even though I personally had never heard of this guy he sounds like he was quite the charecter and will be missed.

If you saw the movie 'Apollo 13' his roll was played in it. When they were preparing for launch they were joking around with this guy about them "valking un talking on the moon" as he fitted their suits.

Have a look at the series "from the earth to the moon" and you will see the impact he had on the space program. His efforts, and others who followed, made space safer to explore.
