'289 degrees ... I make it a escort... she is burning amidships.' I drop periscope.
Another message comes in ...
And so goes this caper I am in. We all know the messages are immersion. So when in GC sector I get messages that another U-Boat tagged a vessel from a convoy I seem to be following I have to wonder? Coincidence??
The sea is a maelstrom. It is night and raining sideways. A convoy is in reach.
I spot another escort and it too is smoking but not on fire. The convoy is zig-zagging and acting like sheep smelling wolves ...
I say, this is good stuff. No one sees me yet that I know and I get a feeling that another sub is on the hunt with me.
Not possible I know. Not coded in the game. Or is it something new?

If you're playing with GWX there are surface ai subs occasionally - they attack using the deck gun, so it could be possible one is near. Check for radio contacts - if one is out there it should be picked up by your radio man when you give him the 'report radio contacts' order

I just ran into a lone burning ship a couple hours ago, I also found one about a week ago

Also in bad weather some ships take damage from the waves and catch on fire. That was true in the stock game, and still is.

I've actually seen ships get straffed from Luftewaffe attacks at sea, it pissed me off at first because I had been stalking that ship for some time

Three possibilities:
1 An earlier attack by the fly boys
2 Damage from weather (treated the same way as battle damage) by the game engine
3 An attack from AI subs

WOW. I did not know AI subs could attack.
When I took my first up periscope peak I just saw a red light in the distance and assumed it was a light on in the convoy ....
Closer I saw it was a ship afire.
Then the zigging. of the convoy was apparent.
A radio message did indeed report a U-Boat did engage and hit a vessel in the convoy ...
Heading into the mouth of Gibraltar ... going to try to pick off stragglers at day break.

(I do believe I recall Aces of the Deep had AI wolfpacks - but my memory may be off as that was 12 years back).

AI subs can only attack with their deck guns on the surface they are incapable of firing torpedos.
The radio message will have been a pure coincedence.

Well, one way to confirm that friendly forces are in the area when you see the zig-zagging and ships afire... is to look for damage represented graphically on the ships' structure. The bad weather damage bug won't cause that. ;)

Excellent point Todd! Thanks for that hint!:sunny:

Pure coincidence! as I thought. The sea state is too rough for a deck gun or duck.
Wouldn't it be great of there were a "proximity" bubble around ships when an AI sub was within range so an immersion "eel" hit could be 'actuated' on cue - this storm, ship afire and radio message really ramped up the sim!!! It was the best immersion yet for me anyway. I felt I was in the thick of it. Sort of like that scene in Das Boot.
