Ok, I am just wanting to make sure that my install of GTX is not goofed up. I was playing early years (1940) and even though I was close to the English shore, I had a plane other then a german one fly overhead. Now, the weather was frightful at times, but I was wondering if GTX has low amount of planes in the early years, or if my install might be goofed up on GTX.
(I installed GTX on a clean SHIII install, then installed SH3 Commander.

I thought the same thing with mine so I sailed through Gibraltar with a U-Flak and seen plenty. I'm not sure why there are low amounts of planes near the english coasts in GWX

Early in the war the Allies were still getting geared up for ASW, so don't expect to see much activity from the RAF. From 1943 onwards everything just goes downhill though :nope:

youll see PLENTY in 43
pretty much every convoy will have an aircraft over it within hours of you being spotted, and many convoys even have escort carriers, so you may see wildcats and such circling. it seems escort carriers are far more common to murmansk than across the atlantic.

I'm in August 1940 and only recently have I noticed much in the way of British air patrols other than the odd one or two previously. Sailing round Scotland to get out into the Ocean though I am beginning to spot them quite a lot, generally before they spot me, thankfully.
Be careful of light levels that far north and don't do what I did yesterday and assume that as it's 22:30-23:00 (surely the flyboys wil be in bed by now) and you've no hydrophone contacts you'll be OK to surface without checking the scopes. I'm sure the two Swordfish pilots were as surprised as I was at the sight of a U-boat surfacing directly below them. Superficial damage only, but it's the last time I neglect to take a look around at periscope depth before breaking the surface.

Pilot debrief...
"We where flying along, when suddenly right ahead of us we saw a U-boat surface, we where so surpised we missed it.....
Thanks for letting me know, I was getting worried that I had somehow not installed it correctly. If push comes to shove, I might just make a test of sailing towards the rock on the surface till I see planes.

Actually this is historically correct from July to October 1940 you shouldn't see anything flying around Britain. The Battle of Britain was raging during these months and anything allied that could fly was strictly for defensive use. They would only scramble when a German air raid was in progress.
So enjoy it while it lasts because before you know it they will be all over you again.

Belive me, I do, just that I was playing in the early war years and hadn't seen a plane (while in stock SHIII, you do have spitfires and a occasional Swordfish showing up the day after the war starts) and i wanted to see if this was due to design (as GWX had thought of the Battle for Britian) or if there is a bug in the install. From what people have said, it appears that this is by design.
I dive whenever I see a warship or plane, it is the best way to stay alive since I play DiD. The only question is how deep the water is, so I know if it is a regular dive or a crash dive.

The aircraft in GWX3.0 are harder to shoot down than any previous version to date.
If you sight a Swordfish it usually means there is a carrier not too far away.
Best advice: BEWARE OF GWX AIRPLANES even in early years. :salute:

Man, had my first sighting of an aircraft this last patrol, in 39. No hesitation for this guy to come in and strafe me, and then for him to drop a bomb which just missed me. Scary day.

Same here - it was October '39 I'd just sunk a ship and saw the life boats. In full role player mode I decided to sail towards the lifeboats and offer supplies (in my head lol) 10 mins later as I was leaving a Blenhem drops a bomb on me! Ended up with 87% hull integrity
Wont be doing that again:hmmm:

This is odd :06: In 4 different careers going from August 39-December 1940, I've not seen a single plane on any patrol around the UK.

Not seen any since - probably just a question of luck I guess , with a dash of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Mostly they seem to be concentrated up near Scotland and the Shetland Island, and never anything more than a couple of Swordfish or a recon/bomber type.

Tis probably the Anson.

:yep: Shot down two of those on a patrol once, Sept 1939, coming down around the west of Scotland. One right after the other. I'd blasted some little supply ship to bits with the deck gun the night before just NW of Scapa so I wondered if they were out looking for me.
Aside from what appeared to be an Irish plane of some type flying off the west coast of Ireland in my last career, I think those are the only two planes I've seen so far (other than friendlies over a home port).

If you'd like to see some aircrafts just go to the mediterranean sea, it's plenty of them down there.

I recently installed NYGM and now everytime I travel past Scottland they come out in force like mosquitoes (With alot more bite). Daily straffings have become an occurance.
This has absolutly nothing to do with GWX but If you want loads of planes, thats where I found them

Ah right....the Med is like a large pond with many countries around its edges and hence quite a few airbases.

Just to make sure I made a 1943 boat and sailed out of France, I wasn't even 100 miles out before a Wellington was bombing me, so now I know the aircraft work in my install. :yeah:
Edit - I See the question was answered in another thread!

I'm on my first campaign and have GWX installed, am up to September 1940.
I spotted an aircraft once each during my first 2 war time patrols.
I think it was my 4th or 5th patrol where I spotted aircraft 5 or 6 times and was attacked 3 times IIRC. This was SW of Scapa and down the Scots coast. Luckily I had enough warning and was able to dive away each time and avoid their eggs.
Since then it's been quiet.
These are all North Sea patrols along the British east coast in my IIA U-6

Had my first early war aircraft sighting last night, Late September/early Aug off the west coast of scotland. was putting a stern Eel in a crippled freighter when my watch screamed "Aircraft spotted", and since I had just watched the first part of Das Boot again recently, I screamed "ALARM" as I pressed c
Then after the anson<sp> had dropped it ammo and bombs, I asked my navigator "how much water under the keel" and when he came back with 7 meters, (while I am crash diving), i almost messed my pants. tried to level off but still dinged the bottom. turned out I crashed dived in about 40 meters of water in a VII. :shifty:
This also was SW of Scapa on the scot coast, and I will make sure to keep sharp eyes as apparently there is early war air coverage in that area.
