View Full Version : Storms and the deck gun

Hi, just a quick question that I'm sure has been asked many times before.
A long time ago I think I heard someone mention that the "never-ending storm" was a bug. I find that on almost every patrol, as soon as I hit my first rough weather, my deck gun is instantly useless for the rest of the patrol. The visible effects of rough weather go away, but I am never again able to man my deck gun. This is really irritating as it means I can't just pop lone merchants with the gun or defend myself with flak.
Is there a way to either remedy this, or do disable storms entirely?
I am using vanilla SH3, no mods.
Hi
Have you checked to make sure you have it patched to 1.4.
The best remedy for stock SH III bugs\issues is to download one of the supermods, such as GWX 3.0.
Aside from that I have never encountered this problem.
Sorry.:salute:

I've never seen this, even under stock SH3. Here is how you can tell if your deck gun should work or not:
If you put crew into the watch tower, and they are wearing foul weather gear (not normal clothes), then you won't be able to use your deck gun.

Well if you use GWX you can use the All weather guns mod. I used to use it all the time but due to a strange problem my computer crashes when running GWX now.

I want to download GWX as it sounds great but I'm stuck on dialup out here. I'm definitely going to download it next time I'm at my house where I have broadband.
Yes the foul weather gear is involved too. The problem I face is that in completely calm seas, my men will be wearing the foul weather gear and unable to man the guns.

Try manually dragging a crew member from the bridge to say the fore torpedo room,then drag him back to the bridge and that should get him out of his wet weather gear.
I usually do that to get them into their oilskins as being the tough nuts they are they would stay up there in their shirts if I let them :har:
@ Little Uboots
You have two mods that I use, and can be usefull to you:
1- GWX3.0 All_Weather_Guns
2- Stop_the_rain-16km Atm
The first one has the data/submarine/NSS_Uboat7b.cfg ( there is a .cfg for every U-boat ) modified as follow :
[Properties]
PeriscopeDepth=13;meters 12.5
SnorkelDepth=7.8;meters. was 13
CrashDepth=25;meters. was 70
MaxDepth=500;meters
SurfaceDepth=8;meters
TorpLaunchMaxDepth=20;meters
StormConditions=99,1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1];was 11,0.4
The second one is more tricky to explain, and has the following files modified :
data/env/6 files modified EnvColors & SkyColors.dat
" /menu/en_menu.txt
" /Sound/amb_Rain.wav & amb_RainLocal.wav
As long as the wind speed is at or above the StormConditions setting for your U-boat you won't be able to man the guns. It might look fairly calm out there at 7 m/s winds, especially after a few days of 15 m/s, but if you have the following line in your (for example) NSS_Uboat7b.cfg file...
StormConditions=7,0.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]
... and the wind is 7 m/s or higher, the guns aren't usable.
GWX raises this to 9 m/s for the II, 11 m/s for the VII and IX and 14 m/s for the XXI. Mostly. :)
As a side note, the fatigue model assumes storm conditions at 7 or higher no matter what this setting.

Download my all weather guns mod and give it a go (available from my FF account...link above my sig).
If it doesn't work with stock/vanilla (never tested on such) look at the NSS submarine files and change as per detail in the earlier post by JMV.
Be advised....altering the storm conditions means your crew, whilst manning the deck gun in all weather, will never wear they're oilskins.

Hi to all of you.....
I have been lurking (on & off) these forums for many a year and bought SH3 when it first came out. Could not really get it to run on this system of mine so gave up.... but about 5 weeks back tried again and tweaked particle resolution around so I can now just about get away with the odd
freeze-up :DL. Love it to bits!
Anyway, regarding the deck gun and bad weather conditions I tried Jimbuna's advice regarding the all weather mod download and attempted it
via JSGME and although it says enabled / activated it does not work in stock SH3. ( or have I cocked it up somehow ? )
I then tried to alter the storm conditions in the sub NSS files but could not do so because of something like 'windows is unable to open the file because
it does not know the program that created it'....followed by a search the web option (to find the program) followed by a link to regclean etc. etc.
So if anyone can tell me what I need to be able to open these NSS files I will be v grateful.
Your all smashing on here and I think the modders are awesome in what they do:salute: .......must be on something.........

You can open the NSS files via Notepad.
Are you sure you unpacke my mod into the 'MODS' folder located within the SH3 game folder?

I wondered about this the other day... kept diving and surfacing and switching out the watch crew... was a bit like musical turms. Crew complained, so I told them all to stfu if they knew what was good for 'em.

I'm presuming your running the stock/vanilla version of the game.
Install JSGME into your SH3 game folder in C\Programs....a folder called 'MODS' should be created but if it hasn't simply double click on the JSGME folder and it will create a one for you.
