Been stalking a small convoy, sunk 2 of the four merchants and successfully evaded the escorts..was on my way home when lookouts reported a contact.

Lovely dark night so I turned towards it and closed the distance. When I got to within 2000m went to periscope depth and reduced speed. Quick look through the scope and there is this destroyer just sitting there slowly drifting. I am coming directly at her and she has her stern to me, well its just off to the left of my view in the scope, so what would that be about 15 degrees ???

Anyways...set up the torps and fire at 800 meters my scope is pointing right in her middle....cant miss can I....(saved just prior to this)

Yep....missed everytime....I have tried every which way but each time she speeds up just in time...How can I sink the little blighter, its personal now :)

If you keep missing behind your speed is wrong so use a higher speed. Or try using an angle spread in the direction he is heading, for example if he is moving right to left use a spread of 5,2,0 degrees left.

Also if be sure to set depth at the minimum to prevent the torps running under the DD.

See Webster's Ship Maneuvering Fix for v1.4 and v1.5 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=150164) to address this. Without that mod, I'd be staying in the Atlantic with SHIII. As it stands now, I have pleasant diversions with fleet boats and Indian Ocean operations.

Im using manual targeting without the pk so I believe I cannot set the spread, as they all seem to go the same way ?

Also its stationery - well apart from drift so will try firing just in front.

Typical though isnt it....sorted the moving, zig zagging convoy but cant hit a stationery target 800 yards away

That is a tough one. when they start doing that I plot the boundaries of how far L/R they go, this gives you a pretty good idea. Time how long it take to go from one side to the next. get the shot lined down the middle of the zig,zag alley and fire when the fish will interset the ship in the middle of the zig zag. It is really tough to do but it can be done.

Or just stalk and wait for it to calm down...:arrgh!:

You have a spread meter to set spreads, but much easier to do with bearings.

If it's stopped, do everything correctly with the stad, aob, set speed to zero if it's stopped..Unlock, take a bearing in front, shoot, move your bearing middle, shoot..

Look at your attack map and you'll see your torp lines, although close in the ships may not show, but you see the name.

I have never tried a shot at the stern like that, but when i'm approaching from a side angle i fire tubes 1 & 2 quickly, tube 1 is aimed at the ship and tube 2 is aimed ahead of the ship. Fish 1 usually misses when the DD goes to flank ahead, but the second one hits most of the time and either sinks the DD or does enough damage to stop the dragster effect.

If it's really all that personal....

Your looking at her stern, so fire three at her, first right at her stern and one each left and right. At 800 yards one or two degrees left and right should do it. If she is at a small angle adjust your offset accordingly, a little more right or left. Problem is three torpedoes on a small DD???

When you get it, load up that save and go about your business of sinking merchants and leave the DD alone.
