View Full Version : Hunting grounds in the North Sea?

I am playing with GWX, and have started a 1939-1940's in a IIA, so needless to say, the usual Western Approches hunting grounds are out of range.

On the 2nd day of the war, I was able to bag a nice 10k ton cargo ship, and took out a V&W near Scapa, but otherwise I am not finding any ships except for a occasional fishing boat. anyone know of good Grids to check out for merchants in the Nord Sea? Cus I need to get some merchants so I can upgrade to a VII so I am not stuck with a IIA!

You might also want to consider hanging about the north east tip of Scotland (east of Scapa Flow) and cath the traffic coming round 'the bend' heading for the English east coast.

You can always fish up and down the East coast of England on the way to and from your assigned grids. The Type II is small, so if you get trapped in shallower water (obviously if it's shallow enough you're in trouble, regardless of size), you can use that to your advantage.

Plenty of Br mercs travelling from Narvik way to Scotland
From late Oct 39 you will also get some nice fat convoys going between Methil Roads and Bergen ( and back ) though they have a high proportion of neutral in them

Thank you all, I fianlly found some decent hunting grounds, and now I am more then half way to getting enough Renown to get a VII when they are released for use. :salute:

Or you could simply go to (presuming you've got XP or Vista OS) your career folder Patrols_0 CFG found in C\MyDocs and change the DeltaRenown to any amount you like....ensure your in port before you do this.

True jimbuna, I might give me a one time boost on this one as I prefer to get a little Renown for station-keeping, but the first few patrols in GTX I didn't have that set up, so I might "rollback" SC 3 and give me a small one time boost to make up that I didn't get credit for that on my first few patrols.

Just make sure your in port after a patrol and the game has been saved before you dabble with the CFG file.

You can change it to give you renown for going to your allocated area. Just go into the main game folder, and go to data/cfg/basic.cfg. If you change the "0" (zeros) next to the renown parts for going to the grid square, etc, you'll be given renown for going there, staying there for the 24 hours, and then for returning.

Probably no point in changing the 0 renown for returning all the way to base. If I'm not mistaken the renown for returning all the way to base (not teleporting) never worked, there was a stock bug with it and so far nobody's found a fix for it. Anyhoo I've tried changing it back from 0 to whatever it was in stock, didn't work. :wah:

IIRC stock values for reaching grid and completing patrol are 500 and 200 respectively.

I believe stock is 200 for reaching and another 200 (or 400) for staying on station for 24 hours. Or maybe it's 400 for reaching and 200 for patrolling 24 hours. Or just 200 for each? :doh:

I'm thinking I got 700 renown at 100% realism for reaching the grid and staying on station for 24 hours, on a 1st prewar patrol where there wasn't anything else to do so no renown for anything else but those two "achievements." Pretty sure it's 500/200 but I could be wrong. It's been a while.

You can't be stuck with a Type II. You're blessed with one.

IIA do have there advantages, small, quiet, and can maneuver, just that they are limited in their torpedo's and no deck gun means that its a quick hunt, go find one or two ships, then Return to base.

In WWII, the Type II captains would stop into friendly ports to re-supply and reload. You can simulate this in SHIII, by using SHIII Commander to limit your stay in port to 1 day, but I believe the visit counts as the end/start of another patrol.

From the stock game Basic.cfg file:

[RENOWN]
RenownReachGridObjCompleted=500
RenownPatrolGridObjCompleted=200
CompletedPatrol=100
