Looks like as long as I have this OS installed I'm not playing SH4 anymore. Every mod I use not matter how many times I've re-installed the game just crashes intermittently. Yes I'm running it as admin and have all the privileges set. Thank you microsux. :nope:
If only XP could use DX10... I never EVER would have switched.
You may have already done this but, is SH4 in it's own folder, C/whatever/sh4
or did it install into default location? Even onto a different drive E/sh4 would be good.

E:\program files\ubisoft\sh4

Make sure you install the direct x 9.0 that came on the disk, Sh4 doesn't need X 10.
But it sounds like putting it in a separate folder or drive as audessy suggested should fix the problem.

I play SH4 under Vista 64 since a few months, now, and no specific problem to report...
A CTD from times to times, but rarely, and reading the forum, apparently no more no less than other users with other OS.
My system disk is C:, SH4 installed under J:\SH4.
DirectX 10 installed, last version of all drivers.

If you would know me, you'd know I'm the kind of guy who is always happy to knock Redmond's enterprise every time he can, but in this case, I cannot.
Why would Vista prevent you from playing in standard conditions. I'd rather point at the graphic driver or something of that kind. (ie : I play SH4 in windows 7 and it works very well)

Well I know SH4 doesn't use DX10. But installing DX9 from the disc should have no effect. Dxdiag says all the files are there. I guess I could try it. I just don't see how not doing so could prevent my game from running smoothly.

what you might try is uninstall all your mods, then install them one at a time to see if the mods are causing it i had the same trouble that what i did and it was one of the mods i had.
Vista and Windows 7 protect the Program Files folder with extra care. If you want to modify files in one of those folder structures (like when patching or modding) then it's going to complain with a UAC window challenging you to provide administrator credentials. Or if your account is administrator then you need to acknowledge. But the game doesn't like that happening in the background, or you can't notice it and then some response timer ends, and so the game get's killed. The easiest solution to this all is to install the game somewhere else on your harddrive, but not in the folder in Program Files. No other tweaks are neccesary to my knowledge and satisfied experience.

What he /\ said. Take a look at: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/VistasShowCompatibilityFilesAndTheScrumptiousWonde rThatIsFileVirtualization.aspx
... it explains it a lot better than I can. Reinstall SH4 into some other directory (I'd use E:\Games\Silent Hunter 4).

I reinstalled all SH4 from scratch last week, due to a torperdo problem with OM+OMEGU. So, i think we can say DirectX 10 was installed when i installed the game :)
I have two installs on WIN 7 64 and DX 10 with no problems...I cant Imagen what you are doing wrong....:hmmm:......How about posting your system specs....
Guess he dosent need anymore help....

Sata II HDD's
Radeon 4870 PCI-X Display adapter running DVI on a 28 inch HDTV@1440x900
Mild AF and AA settings.
Vista Ultimate 32bit.
I'm starting to think I may need to clear some registries. I think at one point SH4 was much more stable than this.

I tried everything you mentioned already. Still no go.
Numerous re-installs. I noticed it's far less stable using RUB. When using TMO it seems to crash most often when I'm stalking a target... A critical and frustrating moment for it to crash.
Sometimes it seems like it's having a particular problem with "spawning" a certain type of ship. However multiple clean installs and different mods leaves me baffled.
First make sure you can get stock SH4 to run without problems before you start blaming Vista. When that is ok, you can start thinking about adding mods. If you choose to use mods that conflict then it is easily possible that the game crashes. But that is not Vista's fault.

I was having severe crash issues until I fully upgraded to vista SP1. Not even a peep out of ntdll.dll, kernel.dll, or dx93(something or other)
