View Full Version : All they needed to do....

All they needed to do was enhance Silent Hunter IV (1.5) with improved graphics and AI, add the 'first person' element, and make it an Atlantic based 1939 to 1945 campaign. How hard is that?

Instead of which, they gave us a new game full of new bugs that hasn't been purchased by the target demographic (casual gamers) in any significant numbers, which has been boycotted to some degree by the sub sim community because of the DRM, and which ends in 1943.

Let's give Silent Hunter 6 to NBC. :)

Rant button ON*

Lets just beat the horse a little more.

IT'S DEAD ALREADY

We get the point, Ubi messed up on this one. We've heard it a thousand times now, and I'm sure we'll hear it another thousand. What people need to understand is that Ubisoft has your money. They don't care (save for some devs, etc) and they're just going to put half hearted attempts into patching up the bugs.

As they've stated from the beginning, the future of this game (and its successors and lets face it.. its predecessors also) lies within this community. Mods are the future and the sole light for the game.

Now stop crying over spilt milk and do something. If you don't have the game, buy it and help make Mods. If you do have the game, try to make little fixes yourself.

For christ/Allah/whatever else is politically correct, sake.
Grow up.

*Rant OFF*

Well, he has a point. SH3 started it, SH4 should have improved upon it without adding more problems, and SH5 is/should have been a further improvement. When you add features but take some away you're not really improving anything. And mods are the proverbial one legged man so they can only do so much before being limited legally.

There comes a point when you have to decide to switch off the life support to either let it die, or hope it comes back to life on its own.

Good question TDK1044. My only guess is that they tried to appeal to a larger customer base (the dreaded casual gamer). Hence the 'new improved' Silent Hunter 5.

I agree with you ETR about the point that you can't just randomly take away features (also features that improved gameplay) or simply leave features on from prior games but hide them in files (à la missing commands, etc)

But I also think that seeing a thousand posts explaining why Ubi sucks and SH5 sucks and DRM sucks is getting quite ridiculous. I am all for explaining a point of vue. But do we really need to see a new post crop up when someone gets disgruntled?

People need to see that Mods are the future of the game (albeit I also agree on your point of Mods too).

Also, know that I am just as frustrated with Ubi as anyone else here is. I just don't see the need in throwing a fit and posting things that Ubi, and the develepors either won't see or won't care about after they've read it

SH5 is an impovement. Ambitious in many ways. Unfortunately, like everything else, sales dictate the level of support and possiblity of future titles. Sadly for us, it's looking as though SH5 didn't generate enough sales for either. The future of Silent Hunter is in independent development. I wonder, just how much does it cost to put out a Silent Hunter sequel? :hmmm:

Have you got any figures for that? I know some have posted sales ranks off of amazon, but that's not really indicative of how many units have been sold by the retailers, or indeed how many units Ubisoft sold to the retailers. I'd be interested in knowing some actual numbers.

Only Ubi knows how well it is doing. We only have some indirect clues.

For example:

-The Ubi SH5 online "Captain's log", now has 9,964 submitted entries.

-The SH5 and SH5 mods forum are always the most visited forums at subsim.

-The most downloaded file at subsim is a SH5 mod, Heretic's "Mighty Fine Crew" mod with 6,200 downloads.

By comparaison, RFB 2 for SH4 has around 5,000 downloads and GWX 3.0 gold for SH3 has around 15,000 downloads.

My guess is SH5 should do about the same as SH4, say 100,000 max, although that is a total guesstimate on my part. Neal may know more since he has contacts at Ubi, but he is very quiet these days. :arrgh!:

That sounds pretty good. The captain's log thing - If I ever saw the button for that, I didn't press it. That's the one where you publish your patrol online?
