Hey everybody,
I have been mentally absent from the SH world for a long time now.
I haven't played any SH game for months.
And though I have visited the forum and maybe made a short post or two,
I have not been able to concentrate on this area.
What have I been doing then?
I have been writing my thesis for university, and right now, it is 98-99 % finished.
I just have to read it through for small language errors and make sure the references are as they should be.
And then print it...
I just feel like a big burden has been lifted from my shoulders. I'm so damn close to the finish line that I just feel like I'm in heaven. It's better than alcohol, good food and almost even better than a rendez-vous with someone of the opposite sex. And that just says it all, I think... :D
Tomorrow, at 12.00 (GMT+1), I have my deadline. So after that time, I think I will go home and open a bottle of champaign. I think I have deserved it. :()1:

Wadda ya getting your degree in?
my title will be cand.mag. something like candidate magister, in other words capable of teaching. :know:
I have been studying French as my main subject and German as my secondary subject. The theme of my thesis has been about the situation for foreign language in Denmark, which sad to say is in a negative movement towards a society where it seems to be enough with only knowing of one foreign language, which is English. Obviously, it ain't in a big modern world. English may be the most common foreign language for many, but it is just as important that many people speak at least two, if not better three foreign languages. Both for private purposes, but mainly because of the world trade. If you want to have a job in a company which trades with foreign countries, it would be wise to know how to speak Chinese if you want to sell your goods in China, or French if you want to do business with French companies. It's just common sense that you cannot expect a customer to speak the language or the common foreign language as yourself. It may be fine if you want to buy something, but if you want to sell something, then you better know the language of the customer. It's just common sense and a matter of honour and decency. And well, it doesn't seem like the current Danish government cares about that languages studies are closing down at universities, which is a catastrophy... :nope:
I even tried to get a comment from the current minister of education, but she wasn't willing to comment. So I have asked a journalist of one of our national tv stations to have a look at it... maybe that will work... :hmmm:

Reminds me of an old joke
What do you call someone who can speak three languages? Multi-lingual
What do you call someone who can speak two languages? Bilingual
What do you call someone who can speak one language> American.
Sadly, I am in that third category. I am envious of anyone who can speak more than one language. :yep:

Good joke Platapus:haha: (It's so true):hmmm:
The truth is, once you start learning another language after the one you were born with, you start to understand more languages after that. I was born "English" speaking, but learned French at a young age. Then Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Greek all seemed to make sense.
German and Flemish kicked in next. I'm no expert in any of those languages but I can usually understand what is being said. Even Russian can make sense at times now.

I agree with your thoughts about multi-lingual needs in the world. I salute your work.
Here's a little joke about the English language:
There's a penny for your thoughts and putting your two cents worth in. Someone, somewhere is getting that extra penny!

Oh, how I remember those days. Yes, the thesis and dissertation are some of the most difficult things you will ever have to do.

Congrats on completing your thesis. It's not an easy thing to do. I remember my undergrad honors thesis with a very marked distaste. 110 pages of writing hell. Very glad to have finished that. Fortunately, law school does not require a dissertation to get a J.D., and for that, I consider myself very lucky. In another year I will finally have earned post-nomial letters that I will actually use on a regular basis, and I'm really looking forward to it. Adding just a B.A. after one's name is (unfortunately from my perspective) just not done.

I have received a very pleasant mail today:
my thesis has been pre-approved. :woot:
So now, I can just wait and see how good a grade it will get. It doesn't really matter to me. That it was good enough to pass, was reward enough for me.

Congrats Carotio!
Handed in mine 2 years ago this month, I managed to lose all interest about 40% into it, still managed to grind out the rest :)

Good luck with your grading Carotio. I remember doing my dissertation a couple of years back was a nightmare. Working all night and day by the end to get it finished. All the best with the grading, good luck :)
