OK, it's May 24, 1940, and I'm headed down for my 9th patrol to DJ12 in command of U-64, my IXB. Around 3AM I receive a convoy contact report that's only around 30KM away so I move to intercept.
That went well: Around 0400 four torpedoes fired, three hits, two confirmed sinkings, one medium cargo and one empire. I dive, go deep, wait until the sole destroyer stops looking for me, then start reloading. Once I've reloaded, I surface, take a quick look around, go to flank and move for a second interception.
Problem is, by now it's around 0540, and it's pretty light out. I can't get as close to them as I'd like on the surface, and I dislike using the periscope unless I'm close and it's very light out. Worse, I have three G7a and one G7e. So unless I fire the single eletric I'm pretty sure someone is going to see them coming.
At 2KM I fire two G7as then turn 90 and dive. Just as a lark (and because I rather like seeing the explsions! :arrgh!:) I went eternal, panned over to my target, took position on the stern and watched. The one mod I use has the steamers leave long wakes and, boy howdy! they are long!
Sure enough, I sea --and hear-- the medium cargo speed up and start zigzagging. I watch as the first torpedo hits roughly amidship . . . and then this is where it got hysterical.
The second torpedo hit near the stern. It didn't detonate . . . it leviated! I watched it bounce up in the air, almost level to the cargo ships gunwales, do three entire circles roundabout, then hit the water with a huge splash.
I have never, ever seen anything so funny before!
