View Full Version : Has SH5 kept your interest?

A question for those THAT OWN AND HAVE PLAYED THE GAME...Do you find yourself playing the game as much, or more, now than when you first bought it? Or less? In either case, why? What is it that has a) kept you interested or b) made you lose interest?

I've decided not to make this a poll because the stats don't interest me, only the reasons one way or the other - I've read more than a handful of "I've stopped playing the game for now" posts recently, and when some are from guys who only two months ago were criticising anyone who had a negative comment about SH5, it makes me curious about the game's replayability.

No ulterior motive here, just curious for your opinion, one way or the other.

Dont play it now, removed from hd and using arma2 im afraid, had enough of all the problems with it, may check it out in the future, after a couple of patches, but not caring right now.

Played only one week and then got frustrated. Have not played after that.

Played it and loved it at first. Clocked the game and immediately started again but despite all the excellent mods, I have lost patience with it now and stopped playing it mainly because of the bugs.

I really have been willing to give the game the benefit of the doubt but I have just got a bit sick of it. I will certainly give it another go when the patch comes out but until then, i'm not touching it.

I would be very interested to see the DRM figures for log on's and how they differ week to week

Haven't played in a couple weeks because I spend all my playing time wishing it worked properly. DRM has become a non-issue because I won't play until patched if it had NO copy protection at all.

I've got to say I'm playing it more and more at the moment. The mods are really bringing the game more to life already for me. TheDarkWraith's UI mod definately makes a huge contribution to the game, and even better that he's been updating and has pretty much released a new version each day recently! ddrgn's feared hunters and elite campaign mods make the DD's a real challenge - I just installed them last night, went out on patrol, and came back with only half a ship!

I think SH5 is continually evolving, and that is what I like about it, to be honest, the mods are so good that I've stopped worrying about when the patch is coming out. (plus it worries me a little, I dont want all my mods to suddenly become incompatible!!!)

I think all those that have given up should perhaps wait a few months then come back. The modders are doing an excellent job, and 1.2 is only just around the corner and I truly believe that in 6 months to a year SH5 will almost certianly outclass SH3, and become the best subsim we've ever seen. It just needs us to have the patience to wait for the dev's to sort out the game engine (It does use wayyy to much GPU time as far as I'm concerned) and other little bugs, and wait for the modders to release some truly special mod pack! I think that in 5 years time, when/if ubi bring out, say, Silent Hunter 7, we'll all sit in here and moan and complain saying 'AAAAGH! Its nowhere as good as SH5!!!!!!!!!'

I play it no more, waiting for patch. Until then I'm back to WoW.

Too much bugs and most of all, the AI is completely retarded. Campaign is boring based on "fire &refit" and even if there are mods that improve the AI behaviour, is not enough. I reistalled it yesterday again, but quited after an hour. The only reason that makes me to play it now and then is the graphics, is the only thing in SH5 that I really love.

I haven't played it for about a month. It is in large part because the game still needs fixing IMO. Don't care about the DRM, hasn't bothered me a bit when I did play.

To be fair though I have been playing alot of rFactor because of a new 1972 Bathurst mod :yeah: That has made it pretty easy to put SHV on the shelf until it is improved. I do see the potential, but it isn't there yet for me.

When I first bought the game the only upset I had was the AI. Coming from SH4 with TMO I'm used to needing an extra change of underwear when I attack convoys. With this game I could sail into Scapa (I literally did this 3 times..) and get all the tonnage I want and then slink away..

This AI feeling, plus the having to start a campaign always from 39 and not from say 41 or 42 let me to just play on and off. However, after downloading Feared Hunters and Uboat Killer AI Mod, the AI is back up to par. Merchies even evade after one has been hit! :D

You can really see the potential in this with Mods attached. As for bugs I haven't really seen any other then the crew on deck (when submerged) and kamikaze merchies in Kiel. DRM for me is a non issue as my firewall and Norton are up to date and my connection is a good one.

All in all, I've found myself playing it more and more with Mods. Excellent game and I look forward to its latest Mods and Patches

I enjoy it and am playing it alot, though I will probably lose interest before the patch comes out.

Major buzz kill for me was getting rammed by a Tribal Class DD at full speed and sustaining only 1% damage to my flak gun. It rolled my sub over but inside there was no change at all and all was fine. I called my sub dead and started another campaign.

I don't own SH5 but I believe you can start at a different date once you've completed the different operations in your first campaign:

from this thread: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=1342641#post1342641

Post #78 "Have you returned to the start campaign menu after completing a number of campaigns ;) ?" in response to post #76 "You cant load up the game and think screw 1939 its a cakewalk I fancy starting in 1940 or 41"

Short answer... yup.

Long answer...

The only major gripe I have with it is the way damage to AI ships is not carried over after a Save Game.

So I went on a numer of forums and complained and started several diferent threads and got into a number of e-duels with people. I also suggested that other people organize a boycott and suggested that other people hire a lawyer and start a class action suit. Then I quit those forums in a dramatic, public manner so that the President of Ubisoft would know he had made a serious mistake.

Just kidding. Actually I just adjusted my gameplay approach so now I never attack unless I have time to finish 'em off.

Other than that I find it enjoyable (with several Mods, of course). And as I get farther into the campaign, very challenging.

I stopped playing it and my interest in it slowly dies. They have handled this game like amateurs. They released it in the worst state i've seen in a very long time and they delay patch because they want to add some extra modtools or possibility to add more ships from SH4. That's cool of course but i don't appreciate being told to wait an extra month to play a game i bought almost 2 months ago, which is more or less unplayable out of the box. They could have released the patch now with 1st priority fixes and released a new patch later on with the rest.

The game itself doesn't hold my loyalty. If it weren't for the mods and the anticipation of what the game 'could' be, I'd not play it.

My experience with SH3 & 4 is that the game is vastly improved once the mods are in place.

(I'm not a modder.)

I still play it regularly just finished off all the missions through the Atlantic

as stated so many time before the mods greatly improve the game and
anything else I don't like I change

Similar to 4, there was enough in the initial release to keep my interest, plus there have been some nice mods released,
so that has helped as well.

I bought the game 6 weeks ago but I don't install it yet. I miss the feeling, the realism and the inmersion. Eyecandy is good but not enough. I'll wait for pachts and mods...but I donīt expect surprises.

I was going to start a new campaign when the patch came out but it's being delayed again so it is just sitting on my computer wasting space for now. I have been watching the mods to see which ones to use when it does come out but then again they might not work when it does. I wish you could start the campaign later cause I'm not sure the game has enough playability for me to finish it.

Yes it has.
Picked the game up about 3 weeks ago.
I'm anticipating some great things from the patch coming up.
I've applied certain mods to enhance gameplay.
Overall, lots of work still to be done on this, however i have faith, patience and an open mind.

I played it quite a bit the week after release, but I don't play at all now.

The lack of merchant variety absolutely killed the game for me. I was tired of sinking the same four ships over and over.

The AI was too dumb as well. I never once felt in danger. I hear some of the mods have addressed this but it's a moot point until the above is fixed.

I am eagerly awaiting the next patch. It seems to be the only hope for getting new ships in the game.

I only try SH5 for testing mods.

Like with the Hearts of Iron games, I play a Silent Hunter sub game as a coherent adventure.

HOI3 was recently patched to 1.4 iirc, and I will probably continue playing it again soon. Have not played it since the release, because the game is for me no fun when not being totally into the complicated micromanagement. With each game session, I get burned out.

And similar with Silent Hunter 5, my interest is only with playing it in some coherent manner. Tonnage count doesn't matter, sunk tonnage is not what make the game fun for me. So I await some patching, and hope they will fix the overlapping audio for when walking inside the uboat.

The only major gripe I have with it is the way damage to AI ships is not carried over after a Save Game.I love the game. Of course I have about 20 Mods that make it that way. Unfortunately, there are certain things that cannot yet be fixed, like the problem mentioned above by JCC  Like everybody else, I'm hoping infamous Patch 1.2 tackles some of these problems, but from what I've heard I shouldn't expect too much from Patch 1.2 :shifty:. The list of fixes is pretty short for something that's taken two months to be released. If some of the talented guys in this Community had access to the code and resources that the Devs have, they coulda produced the same number of fixes in one afternoon :O:

In my not-so-humble opinion, the most important question right now is: Will there be a Patch 1.3? There's a VERY good reason why I ask this.

Yes, still play it regularly. It has actually managed to hold my interest better than SH3 and 4, probably because its qualities outweigh its faults.

Good question - Originally I wasnt going to buy it - you know the DRM, the dumbing down - you know the routine - But well I've been playing the series from the very begining so in the end curiosity got the better of me.

So I installed and was a little surprised, sure all my worst fears were confirmed - but there were other elements thet kept me going - not least of these is that for at least for a while there were a number of new mods published nearly every day and these really did tackle some of the issues and improved others

In my opinion the game has the basics to be made good over time - I feel the vanilla game is in a far worse state than SH3 was when it was first released- but if the modders and the assurances of the devs that the game is more mod friendly - well I recon this game is worth hanging in there, at least for a while.

The worst of it is that now with this waiting for the patch and the relative silence re the delay, or a reliable ETA - for me the game is in limbo - I dont want to start a new career with the patch on the way - and having played with a number of the mods installed before uninstalling for a clean install - I really cant face the vanilla again. I sure hope the patch is worth the wait -

One thing worries me is that there seems to be little interest from the publisher in adding on the latter part of the war - so while the modders can attend to bits and pieces I dont think they can alter the career structure which, besides all the waffle abot being dynamic - which it kind of is, it is also linear - which does not bode well re-playability once youve done one camp[aigne

Well my two cents worth - Any way Mr Scones I know your from Canberra so for us antipodeans there's another incentive to hang in there with this game - if we didnt we'd have to watch Austrlaian TV wich is like having a broom inserted in your right eye and extracted through your arse -

God invented computers so decent folks wouldnt have to watch Australian TV

Best Regards to all

Wasnt going to buy it due to the DRM but had it bought for me so gave it a go
Ran it for a few weeks but so much bugged me stopped actually playing and started putting a few things right
Slippery slope as the more I fixed the more I noticed broke

Lack of land units, mines and subnets are a real let down
And coming from a target varied background with GWX the total lack of units is an immersion killer
Plus the AI sucks

Still start the game but only to add ports now

robbo180265
04-30-10, 09:52 AM
The lack of targets was the killer for me.

I got so bored killing the same 3 or 4 ships over and over - I'm sure vanilla SH3 had more targets.

So, with the patch on the way I thought it best to stop playing for a while, seemed silly to carry on when I'd probably have to start again , especially as I could feel the boredom creeping up on me.

I'm back to playing SH3 GWX again and really enjoying it , so my plan is to not play SH5 for quite a while and then see what mods it has when I'm ready to return to it.

Haven't played in at least two weeks - either online or Campaign. I'm not big on adding hundreds of mods, having finally giving up on the previous SH4 due to finding out one-by-one how many items conflict and enhance/encourage the CTD factor impressively. ANYHOW, I'm bored with the Campaigns nonsense and the attendant unrealistic completion requirements, the incredibly retarded AI that hadn't improved by mid-'42, "Morale" and consequences, etc. I'm not even sure I'm going to bother trying to get interested again after - or WHEN! - the Patch finally makes an appearance!

Just in case, the, "necessary disclaimer": I visit Subsim now to see if the above-referenced Patch is available in the US yet. It's easier, faster, and more interesting than watching the Autoloader churn away while loading SH5...

I haven't played in a few weeks now. Like Mookie, I got bored of running into the exact same composition of convoy over and over.
Plus, I don't know...SH3 and 4 always felt like a struggle, as it should.
SH5, with its insane mission requirements and pacifist AI (I mean, the planes? Come on! Just once I'd like to be bombed into an artificial reef) just feels to easy.
I know I'm not a genius sub commander, so why am I racking up tonnage the way I am? I'd like to struggle a lot more to make it more entertaining and to make it feel like I'm really just one sub commander with a war raging on the surface.
If they wanted to make a "Das Boot" simulator, which everyone can agree was a significant influence for the devs, why on earth would they make it so easy? Das Boot was all about getting pulverized over and over with little to show for it... that's what I need to keep playing.
That's why I'm playing Arma 2 at the moment... I like getting my arse kicked.

Absolutely it has kept my interest. More to the fact the modmen have kept my interest. Some really great work coming out on a regular basis now. Making the game better everyday.

I feel bad for all the campaigners out there. In MP we have new maps everyday, different time, all kinds of units. I look forward to my bottle of Jagermiester and some wolfpacking every weekend I can ;] The whole reason I mod is because I am probably even more picky than 90% of the people here. I like my game the best it can be so I work on modding during the week and play with the latest work and mods on the weekends. Awesome stuff... ;]

No problems, I do a lot of the work to better my own game. Glad others like the tweaks too. I kept a lot of SH4 tweaks to myself, but couldn't sit back when I saw the potential. I was worried for the most part there would be no SH5 MP, seriously worried me. Without MP I can honestly tell you I wouldnt be posting. I was also worried the game was going to be completely different from SH3/4. In reality its very much similar. Off the shelf its really a 5 but now after modding its a 9 easy ;]

I will not upgrade my hardware until the game becomes a sim. :nope: It runs SH3 perfectly well :ping:

Saying that the graphics are good and the mods (thanks to all modders:salute:) greatly improve things.

I do enjoy it but get terribly frustrated with having to chase around getting things done - enough of that in RL:yawn: Try finding a closed hatch on the conning tower so that you can open it, get down into the tower so that you can dive when a Destroyer wants to pay a visit:dead:

So - This "game" has great potential and I look forward to the day when I can say to her that holds the purse strings "I need to upgrade my PC for Work".

Played it and enjoyed it despite some flaws as the modders were quick to sort things out to a reasonable level.
Then they released the '7 days until new patch' news and I got into a mindset that I may as well wait for the patch. Bought MS Flight Sim 10 and have got completely and thoroughly addicted to it.
Not sure what I am going to do when the patch actually does come out. Right now I do not feel I will be in any rush to get SH5 going again. I did enjoy SH5, but just no where near as much as I am enjoying FSX.

I played it a lot more when I first got it.

Major issue for me: bugs on reload. I don't always have 2-3 hours to be able to play. The state the game is in now, I don't play it unless I know I have that much time to spend on it. Sadly, I haven't had that much free time in a number of weeks. I need to be able to save the game and be confident that things will be the same on reload so I can do 30, 60, or 90 minute sessions. I can't do that at present so I end up playing something else.

There's a lot of great stuff here, and I very much enjoy playing it. I like the changes they've made overall, particularly the perspective. However I have to admit that I get somewhat demoralized every time I experience glitches still in 5 that were in 3 and 4. Sometimes the mouse view issues I have are frustrating. So I'm also waiting for the patch, hoping these issues will be fixed.

I'm patient and have high hopes :sunny:

I played SH3 continuously from release week right up until about the middle of 2009, hundreds if not over a thousand hours of playing time dedicated to it.

SH5 on the other hand...

I purchased SH5 on release date. of the two weeks i actively played SH5, i probably dedicated 8 hours of play time to it. Total.

It has since been uninstalled and shelved until further notice.

it will also likely be the last ubisoft title of any nautical nature i purchase.

I bought the game and played it for 2 weeks (about 3-4 hrs most nights), I like the game and have tried many mods. about 3 weeks ago I stopped playing SH5. This is because I want to play the game as intended, but I cannot play the game as intended because there are many bugs that ruin the game. the most notable one being the morel system being completley broken (loading a saved game resets all the moral to 0).

Another of my most hated bugs is that a ship get stuck to you! I spent over 6 hrs of my time tracking/trying to intercept a sound contact, that stayed at a set distance from me. No mater how fast i went. i even serfaced and raced along at Extreme speed ahead. I changed direction and so did he. It took awhile before i worked out what had happened. I was so pi**ed when i realised that i was trying to intercept an imposible target. What a waste of 6hrs of my time! :-?

So until the patch is released I have shelved SH5.

I beleive this game will be good when (of should it be IF) its been fixed.

Downloaded mods to make it playable. Play ~1 hour every two days now.

When I play SHV properly I want to get th most out of it. meaning- I'd rather than play SHV at its best, rather than play it unfinished, then be too board of it to revisit it in year or so when I know it will be so much better.

Stopped playing it for now, holding out for patches and supermods.

When I play SHV properly I want to get th most out of it. meaning- I'd rather than play SHV at its best, rather than play it unfinished, then be too board of it to revisit it in year or so when I know it will be so much better.
(History has proven this with SH3 and 4, the are both now twice that game they were out the box)

Exactly how I feel. There's a lot of potential here. I just don't want to get burned out before that potential is realized.

The game sits on my hard drive heavily modded but not played for at least a month now.

Mostly waiting on a patch to fix the things that drove me crazy, dissapering ships, vanishing weather, loss of crew moral, save games that roll me back 'months', etc.

We all are well aware of these issues by now so this isnt an attempt to 'rub it in' its just fact that I am waiting on the fixes then I will give it another chance. :03:

I've played the game a just three or four times in single player (campaign) and one time in multiplayer, shortly after the game was released and (sadly) it was just enough for me to realize that the the game is unplayabe (at least in its current state). I am sticking to SH3 + GWX 3.0, this is for me somehow closer to what a submarine simulator should feel like than to SH5. I am not even waiting patches eagerly and have not even try a single mod (because I would only play a megamod, that in the best case scenario, not small mods that are maybe incompatible between them). The game is "closed" for me in my self and out of my hard-drive, at least until the moment it will become playable (if hopefully that will ever happen ...).

also waiting on patch, played for 3 weeks after release. Even used mods but they couldn't fix the major problems.

Right now with the stuff modders are coming up with I couldn't care less if they release the patch or not.

played the game since day of release. But the campaign is broken and cannot complete mare nostrum because of this. Therefor i will wait for the patch and give it another shot since i might need to restart the campaign any way.

I'm still waiting for the arrival of the IXA,IXB,IXC,IXC/40 and IXD2 and the missing years of 1944-1945 to arrive on SH5

You can make your own campaign to last the entire war, there are even units in SH5 you can't use until 44. When the new patch comes out it will include away to import boats from SH4, that will include all the submarines from U-boat missions. I doubt they will do the work of extending the campaign, that they will leave to us.

Played SH5 for about 1 week and got sick of the bugs and server saved games. Went back to SH3+GWX3 and haven't looked back. I'll see what the upcoming patch improves but many of the above posts list what put me off SH5 and it will take a lot to get me to play it properly again.

Can you not copy your saved games and make your own backups just in case? Im not sure if that has been discussed....

Haven't played for a week and then fired it up last night. Sailing out of port and enjoyed the view. Then two ships ran aground to starboard and blew up. Just turned it off and went to do something else.

Pretty much the way I feel about the game too. I've been in port since the first supposed release date for patch 2 and haven't played since.

I guess I'll give it another go once patch 2 is out ....perhaps, depending whether or not some of the major bugs get fixed..

Stopped playing it the day the patch got postponed for the second time.

Im playing Bad Company 2 multiplayer right now, and I doubt i'll even be back after the patch finally comes out. Having too much fun atm to really care. WIll likely be some months from now before i give the game another shot.

Still playing and still enjoying it.

Though mainly to practice manual torp shooting before I start to really get into the campaigns after next patch.

Sure lots of problems but there are also lots of changes and improvements I enjoy. Plus I have a rig that can run graphics maxed out which are stunning, while still smooth as silk.

Won't be long couple patches and continued support by the great mod community and I can see this taking up a lot of spare time in the near future.

In the meantime, I'm happy to get in more practice and read "Iron Coffins" again.

Played for a week or so and have placed the disk in my box of "pick em up again in a year or so pile".

Will not buy UBI products again and have currently moved over to paradox games, EU3, HOI2's Arsenal of Democracy.

To be honest, over the last 12-18 months, I have actually gone from someone whom would spend at least Ģ80-Ģ100 a month on games, to someone whom now ignores getting excited about new game releases and no longer buy anything on release dates unless its a expansion to a well established game e.g. AOD for HOI2. I am afraid SH5 has caused me to make this move as TBH I feel totally insulted about the current state of the game.

I dont think it is me getting older and wiser with my money as I am in a my mid 30's anyway and have plenty of money. I just think the PC gaming industry has gone very tacky and sloppy over recent years "Almost feels like a social experiment to see how stupid us consumers can be".

Now I am known at home as quite a bad handler of my money and used to be a impulse buyer so my fear is that if I have now got wise to this sloppyness, then others would have already done so and will be doing so even more thus eventually the PC gaming market will die a massive death.

The knock on effect = I no longer bang money into hardware as I don't need it anymore = dropped sales in graphic cards, PC upgrades etc.

IMO the PC gaming industry itself (including hardware developers) really need to put pressure on its own sloppy game makers to protect their own futures as us customers are quite frankly at a tipping point before we decide to abondon our PC's and get our buzz elsewhere.

I already love the simplicity and mobility of the Ipod / Ipad and forsee myself binning the desktop PC's soon.

After buying, I played it a few times and did a few missions in the campaign.
Then I ran in to the well known bugs. I went back to SH3 GWX and I'll give SH5 a try after the coming major bug fix. :hmmm:

BTW, a Dutch/Flemish games magazine was absolutely delighted with SH5, giving it a 88/100 rating. Clearly reviewed by someone who never played SH3 or 4 in-depth, and was grabbed by the, I must admit, very pretty presentation of the game.

Owned it the week of release. Played two patrols with it.... and now it sits on my HDD gathering dust.

The AI bugs and immersion bugs (lack of sub rolling in heavy seas (carryover from SH3), Liberty cargo ships in 1940??, Unrealistic tonnage requirements to "move on" to next mission) are too much.... I have better games to play with my time. :nope:

This firmly sits on my shelf and I await the patch and several good mods. And this is the last time I buy the SH games on release. I will wait for the bargain bin if SH6 is ever released.

I'm also waiting to see what the new patch will do, but I am playing.
The modding community is outstanding. If it were not for the Mods
that I have installed (to make it playable), my copy would also be
collecting dust, or become a paper weight, or coaster.

A question for those THAT OWN AND HAVE PLAYED THE GAME...Do you find yourself playing the game as much, or more, now than when you first bought it? Or less? In either case, why? What is it that has a) kept you interested or b) made you lose interest?

More, daily. Except for the week I took off for vacation. :) Too drunk to play during that heh

quick reply w/o reading thread....

less/none playing

but subsim forums keep my interest in SH5, i browse it everyday to keep up with people bitching about DRM and surf mod threads.

I had a great time with the mods and the game for a while but some things need to be fixed to do my style of manual targeting and apparently i move slow through the campaign so im not wasitng all that time if a new patch is going to bork it.

Havent touched he game for more than a month.

I will see what the patch will bring.

Currently have little time to play, almost no at all, so it applies to almost all games. Except for X3 Terran Conflict which I sometimes run to see my empire grow;)

Patches, not always for the better...

prepatchday - all the bugs, they seemed so far away
now it looks as though they're here to stay
oh, I believe in prepatch day
suddenly - this is not the game it used to be
there's a skill nerf hanging over me
oh, damn patch day came suddenly
why lag had to grow, I don't know - they wouldn't say
skill gains very wrong, now I long for prepatchday
prepatchday - "this is such a killer game", I'd say
now I need a private shard to play
oh, I believe in prepatch day
(lyrics by midas)

But in SH5 case I don't think a patch will hurt much :D
Waiting for patch no 2 and busy working and playing whatever MMO that holds my interest for the day, mostly EQ2/UO.
