In 1981, Sony brought the world the 3.5-inch floppy disk, which for nearly two decades would stand as the PC world's preferred means of storage. In 2011, after 30 years on the market, Sony will cease production of these disks.

Floppy disks, still remember having one that booted up a Dos platform to launch my installed games easily back then.

Heck, when i gave the Computer place my list of things that i wanted in the new "rig", the person glanced over it, asked me a few questions, four i think, if memory serves me correctly.
1 of the questions was:
Do you want a floppy drive in your P.C.?
I looked at him, to see if he was having me on...
Nope, he was serious. I said no in my most genuine and most respectable voice.

Dangit, still my prefered way of flashing BIOS. :(Likewise, CD's are ok but they are not rewritable, the ones that are are not so from DOS, I use my floppy for ghosting also, will have to look into ram sticks, though again I'm not sure that they are accessible from DOS either!:hmmm:

Floppies still have the awesome use of opening the metal plate protecting the disk itself and then letting it slide back again and again and again...

Dude, you so totally reminded me of fun things to do with floppies. :o Ever play floppy disk golf with your friends, using each other as the targets? Or, how about the countless other drinking games that could be invented? The usefulness of the floppy disk does not end at the floppy drive. :yeah:

Dude, you so totally reminded me of fun things to do with floppies. :o Ever play floppy disk golf with your friends, using each other as the targets? Or, how about the countless other drinking games that could be invented? The usefulness of the floppy disk does not end at the floppy drive. :yeah: We would crack them open and use the magnetic disk as a coaster and then glue them back together and leave them laying around where unsuspecting people would stick them in a floppy drive and wonder why they weren't reading any files. Sometimes we would mix the magnetic disks up in other peoples disks to mess with their heads.

I remember making a backup copy of Star wars Tie Fighter took something like 30 floppies and like 3 hrs to complete :har:

I don't even have a floppy drive threw it out years ago. Came in handy for formatting Windows 95/98 back in the day but once xp came out there was no need for a floppy startup disk anymore.
