Based on the detail this has to have been done by a former Russian Submariner.

One of these cartoons was used as an illustration in Peter Huchthausen's book Hostile Waters about the loss of K-219 off Bermuda. This is a great collection of Cold War memorabilia from "the other side", thanks for sharing it.

An old piece on Lenin: http://englishrussia.com/index.php/2007/02/12/lenin-as-he-is-today/ (http://englishrussia.com/index.php/2007/02/12/lenin-as-he-is-today/)

Fantastic stuff, I recall the cartoon in Hostile Waters as well. The guy knows his boats, that's for certain.

Which brings me to a point:

Is that a door leading down into the sail back there, as opposed to the traditional ladder hatch?

And another note, on one cartoon it has two sailors at the same scope, one eyepiece each side, it makes sense in the days before the video periscope, two eyes are better than one as they say.

Good question.

Russian submarines are kinda funny that way Oberon, the watertight hatch is inside the fin with a ladder leading to the bridge. Let me illustrate.

How curious...so the lookout hatch is a form of backup bridge? I know US subs have the bridge at the front of the sail and the hatch leads up as with the old uboats. So you have the main bridge at the front of the sail and then a lookout position behind the antenna?
