I'm actually surprised of the lack of hype for this game.
I can understand here because there is no official PC version coming, but in total the game seems to be underhyped.
I for one am expectantly waiting for it.
For those of you who are unaware of what the game is, It's a Rockstar Games game, an indirect sequel of Red Dead Revolver, its basically GTA meets the wild west.
A couple of features:
The Ability to hunt and skin animals for money
The ability to play poker/black jack
You can buy, steal, or tame horses.
There is a lasso that you can use on enemies or horses.
Instead of your typical multiplayer lobby, where you just look at a window. When you enter multiplayer in Red Dead you'll be in a 16 player Free roam, where you can do whatever you'd like. When the Host decides it's time to start playing a match, the map they're playing on will load up, and all 16 players will be dragged along. Also in the beginning of a match, there will be a draw, all players will be in a circle, the player or team that kills off all the other enemies will have a head start to getting to weapons/and good spots.

@ Spike88 It says Rockstar San Diego on the official site, or is another part of Rockstar responsible for porting their games to the PC? :)

I really liked Call of Juarez 2. If RDR ia anything like that but with more free-roaming option it's a sure buy.
The videos look promising.

When Rockstar games port a game, the main studio that made the game usually does it. But I think Rockstar North was busy with the GTA expansions, so they handed it over to Torronto. San Diego is making Red Dead Redemption because they made Red Dead Revolver. As long as their not busy with anything they'll most likely handle the Port, if there is one.
Call of Juarez 2 was great, although I never finished it. I tried yesterday but it was annoying that the game Locked up for 3-4 seconds every 4 minutes to autosave.
In terms of videos to watch of RDR I'd suggest

Here is the first 6 hours of Red Dead Redemption in article form:
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/108/1086537p1.html
Edit: So I don't have an exact source for this, it's coming from someone who's supposedly played the game.
But apparently the wanted system in Red Dead has had a complete overhaul from what it is in GTA. Here's the exact quote:
Basically you have to kill any witnesses or you WILL get a wanted level - at least in towns. If the witness makes it to the sheriff's office, you've got a bounty on your head. I was messing around in the single player game and killed a person, not realizing I was being watched. I saw a couple-seconds-long cutscene a bit later of a citizen entering the sheriff's office, and then I had a bounty. Pretty sweet system. And I couldn't imagine it working the same if you did it without a town in sight - R* aren't that cruel. http://media.ign.com/boardfaces/1.gif
Now, you don't have to have a bounty on you to get shot at, either! Haha. Sometimes I'd do something and just have to deal with citizens pulling their guns out and opening fire

Knowing Rockstar they'll most likely have references to the Popular westerns.
It'd be awesome if you were standing around in a town, and someone walks by whistling The Good, The bad & The ugly theme.
Or if all the clocks in the game were stuck at 3:10.

In June Rockstar will be releasing free DLC for red dead which will introduce Co-op.

The article also mentions that there will be two other DLC's out during the summer, but you'll have to pay for these, but if they're anything like the DLC for GTA IV, I'd buy them in a heart beat.

I've spent about 18 hours in the game so far. Of that I'd say 4 were spent doing main missions. 1 and a half doing side missions, about 1 hour doing random encounters. The rest of the time has been spent exploring, finding treasure, finding plants, hunting animals, and completing challenges.
The challenges are awesome, much like Challenges in Modern Warfare 2, they're broken into four categories, which have levels to work through.
The Categories are:
Hunting, deals with finding, killing, and skinning certain animals. For example level 1 you have to find 4 coyotes and skin them. Level 3 you had to find 5 wolves, kill them with your knife, and skin them. Level 4 which is what I'm now on you have to get 4 Boar Tusks, and 3 armadillo parts. The hard part is that the chances of getting Boar tusks is about 50/50 I killed about 13 to get the required tusks. The other hard part is that boars charge you, which sends you cartwheeling, and lowers your health considerably.
Survivalist you have to find a certain amount of a certain plant, which isn't that hard if you use a Survivalist map. The only problem so far is I'm not far enough in the story to get into Mexico, so I can't complete my current level.
Sharp Shooter For the first level you have to shoot 5 flying birds, a later challenge has you shooting 5 birds from a moving train, and the one after that you have to shoot 2 hats off two different people, without killing them. The hard part is due to the accuracy of the guns, you'll most likely hit them in the head. The level I'm at now(7) requires me to kill 3 Bears with 1 shot a piece.
Treasure Hunter, you find a map and need to find the treasure, once you find the treasure you get the next map and the next level.
Each has 10 levels, and you get a reward for completing each. Plus a Special outfit for getting 10's in each.

Played about 3 hours now, done some missions for Bonnie and the Marshal. Riding a train at the moment, love that steam locomotive. :DL
Love the atmosphere of the game, beautiful scenery! People travelling on the roads, yae-hoos shootin' in the air.
I'm playing a good guy at the moment, been attacked by bad guys.
Once a woman called from a stage coach said she needed help... Turned out there were several bandits that I failed to notice, and they shot in unison, DEAD. :dead:
Won some money at poker, stabbed my hand a few times at five finger fillet. :dead: :)
I've hunted a few bucks, made some money selling hides, antlers and meat.
I really like this game so far! :yeah:
Planning to see Wyatt Earp I bought a few weeks ago, I haven't seen many Western movies, I've seen two with Clint Eastwood though.

As for Westerns I've only seen the 2007 3:10 to Yuma.
When I get home, I'll write up a mini review on my experience with the game so far.
I'm going the wedding of one of the guys from Rockstar North in a couple of weeks. They've rented a holiday camp in the Highlands for the weekend. it should be good if the weather holds.
I've not really paid any attention to this game but it looks interesting. I'll wait for a PC version, though.

Beware of cougars, and not the ones you find in the bars. They're capable of killing your horse with one swipe, and can easily maul you.

Yeah, encountered cougars, unfortunately one killed my horse.
I killed the cougar though.
No fun to be walking around in cougar country in the dark! :o
By the time you hear that familiar sound of the cougar it may be too late, I have survived so far.
Edit: There are snakes out there too! :o
I saw some dead animal on the minimap, went closer to investigate and was attacked by a snake. Turns out it had killed an armadillo, killed the snake with the knife.
Spike88

The worst part about Cougars is the challenge where you have to kill 2 and skin 2 with your knife.
The worst part is when you're hunting Cougars and you find one, only to have 4-5 wolves attack you at the same time. The first time this happened I was too busy with the wolves, the cougar runs after a man on a horse and kills the man and the horse, and then ends up running from my gunfire because I was shooting the wolves.
As for Snakes, I first found one when I heard a rattle and my snake was being antsy, I look down and realized there was a snake on the ground. He received a revolver bullet. I've also noticed wolves attack snakes.

Must be frustrating if it happens frequently. :/
It seems the default horse can't be lost, the horse I got from a mission with Bonnie was killed by that cougar, and was lost forever.
I managed to kill the default horse after a high fall, but then I could whistle for a new one.:-?
Spike88
05-22-10, 08:30 AM
If you have a top tier of horse and it dies, you'll sometimes get that horse back when you whistle, but you'll usually get a different horse. Mine died and was replaced by a light brown horse with black hair at the tips of its maine and tail. It has died two or three times, but still came back. I just accidentally fell of a cliff and killed it and ended up with a brown and white horse.
So I decided to go out and catch the Kentucky Saddler(which is the horse Bonny gives you). They're quite easy to find, and are one of the three fastest horses in the game. Just look for a Blonde and pearl horse in the wild. If you are unsure you caught the right one, you can take it to your hitching post and hitch it. The game will autosave, head to the nearest shop and buy the Deed for the horse in question, in this case the Kentucky Saddler, go outside and try and use the Deed from the item menu. If you have the right horse the game will tell you that you already have a horse of this type. If not, load your autosave and go hunting again.
Although be wary, if you like getting all the trophies/achievements you need to keep the same horse for 20 missions in a row.
Spike88
05-22-10, 08:44 AM
Scratch that, you need to actually save after hitching it. If you load the autosave you'll lose the horse.

Ah, didn't know about the last bit. Thanks. :)
Didn't think of the buy deed to know what horse I've got.

Spike88
05-22-10, 10:22 AM
I just know that the Top Three horses that you see in the store are the best.
I also know that if you have the deed to a horse(which only costs 750 if you have high enough fame) you can call for a new horse at any time if yours dies, so you can always have the same breed.
I hope someone mods in a Shetland Pony that has four times the health of all the other horses and can knock down a tree at a charge.

I'm definitely missing out on the action this game offers. Not for long. Couple more hours now and I'm going to nick down to the local gameshop I use and buy myself a copy.
I've also seen vids of a hidden achievement/trophy in game. It involves a classic western cliche. Wont spoil it for those of you who dont want it spoiled.

I've made it into Mexico, which is a good thing because I need to find and catch a Hungarian Half-Breed. I accidentally shot my Kentucky Saddler in the head. I had turned off auto aim and was riding around when I saw a skunk and decided to kill it(I need 5 skunk pelts for the Hunter challenge). I'm tracking it with my Bolt Action Rifle(which I had just purchased along with a Semi-automatic shotgun, and a semi auto pistol) and fire when I think I have a perfect shot. Which is at the exact moment that it ran underneath my horses head. BLAM, the horse goes down and I roll a little bit(the horse was in motion), and then I get hit with -50 honor. I walk for a little bit and whistle for my horse, only to receive a different horse. To make matters worse the skunk had gotten away.

Had a bit of a embarrasing moment when a man was attacked by wolves. Shot 1 or 2 of them, then I accidentaly shot the man to death when I tried to get the wolf that was attacking him... Whoops! Used the double barreled shotgun by the way.
Another moment was when I accidentaly shot a wagon, didn't realise it at first but the driver ran to Chuparosa, got a $5 bounty which I gladly paid.
More serious moment in Mexico was when a man was being executed on the road, I didn't know what the Mexican lawmen looked like. Whoops! A bigger bounty this time. :o:oops::oops::doh:

I picked it up yesterday afternoon. Some truly beautiful and stunning vistas in game. 2 that stand out for me is the first time I went on patrol with Bonnie around the ranch at night. Seeing the sky full of stars and moon was amazing.
Second moment was while I was riding back to the ranch to save my game at sunset. The wilds stretching away to a horizon of mountains, golden sunset peeking through the clouds. Amazing.

Had a fun experience last night playing this before i lost my save game due to my Xbox corrupting my USB that I had my save on. Got back to roughly where I was by 12:20am this morning though. Anyway.
I was belting along the road in the middle of the night to get my next mission and advance the story a bit more when a woman in the middle of the road stops me asking for a lift. She promptly spooks my horse, mounts it and rides away. I didn't miss a second, whipped out my lasso and hogtied her where she fell. I didn't stop swearing for a couple of minutes afterward.

Speaking of embarrassing moments, I was doing one of the Random encounters where you need to save the guys wife. I approach the tree and attempt to shoot the rope above her head, only to hit her in the head.

Got my hands on a Hungarian Half Bred last night. Good upgrade to the Kentucky saddler. Going to get my American Standardbred tonight when I get home. Looking forward to it too, been wanting a pure black horse since I started the game.
In other news I finished Mexico, interesting storyline overall down there. Beautiful country too, except for all the wolf packs that seemed to like to sneak up on me. Nothing that a few shots from my repeater or revolver couldn't take care of though.
Next up North Elizabeth, saved in Blackwater and getting ready to hunt bears and cougars. Not looking forward to the latter. I've had my horse and face mauled by those sneaky little things before.

It's neat that wherever you are you can whistle and your horse comes. Even after a train ride or coach takes you to a new town. You should be allowed to name your horses, I think.
Spike88
06-01-10, 11:20 AM
I've come to loathe certain aggressive animals in the wild. IE Cougars and Bears.
I had come down out of the mountains in New Elizabeth after looking for some Hummingbird Sage. I was on my way to the open fields between the mountains and Black Water to look for Prairy Flowers. I see one and get off my horse while running, so my character is moving when he gets onto the ground . All of the sudden I get whacked from behind and see a cougar. Before I could react and shoot that sucker, the pack of wolves that was following him eats me. I was furious. It is annoying when the wolves follow the cougars.
So I respawn in Black water, and decide to find the last treasure up in the mountains, get on my horse and ride towards the mountains. I enter the lower foot hills when I look behind me to see a bear. I try putting him down with one shot, only for him to keep coming. So I try to switch my gun for a better chance, and end up running into 3 more bears. I put bullets in several before they kill my horse and then me. :wah:

I'm not an XBOX gamer, but I decided to give it a try. This is a MUST HAVE, with more depth than GTA. Too often GTA devolved into crazy massacres - with RDR, you actually have to behave responsibly. NPC's are often armed, and the damage model for the player is much more realistic than GTA 3's and probably GTA 4's. If you decide to go on a rampage you'll usually kill just a handful of people before being overwhelmed by a posse. In the real West, I seriously doubt that 40-50 victim killing sprees were common.
This encourages you to take part in the side-quests, hunt, get involved in dynamic encounters, explore the landscape (which is VAST), and behave more like a real human being would have.

I'm moving closer and closer to the end game. West Elizabeth has some very sweet visuals. I've been bounty hunting and spending time playing poker/liar's dice over the past few days. Nice waste of a couple of game days, and I'm slightly richer for it too.

Now to wrap up the ambient challenges and bounty hunting requirements for 100% before I head into the last few missions.
why not just complete the main story before finishin off all the side quest stuff?

The completionist in me. I like to try and do everything a game offers me in one playthrough.
Didn't get to sleep till 1:30am this morning I was hunting critters. Effing Foxes, Racoons and Skunks. At least the rest of the Master Hunter challenges are going to be easier.

Not sure what I dislike more now - Wolves or Cougars...If I ever find the maniac that thought it would be fun for you to hunt 5 wolves with a knife I'll show them what skinning is all about:damn:

Thin the pack out, then take on one or two at a time. Longer yes but much easier. Just wait till you get to the skin 2 cougars, that's a pain to complete.

I can actually take 5 wolves on at a time with my knife. Cougars I can't. :haha:
Rockstar will be releasing two outfits for free(originally were going to be preorder bonuses for gamestop) to make up for the fact that the Deadly Assassin quest is broken. They'll also be releasing a patch to fix said quest.

That is worth watching if you haven't played the game. Otherwise playing the game is better. Also doesn't help that it gets a bit out of mission order either.
Don't turn this into a PS3 vs 360 deal, but hear goes.
I thinking of getting this game, is there a difference in the two console versions.
Reason I ask, is , on some titles one system may have a few more features than the other system.
For example, Op flashpoint on the Xbox had more grass detail than the PS3, and NHL 10 on the xbox had a feature not included in the PS3 version. ( boards and glass did not shake when you checked an opponient on ps3 version)

Anyone else had this happen ,get jumped by a bear which kills your horse ,kill the bear and then skin it and your horse ,use the deed to get another horse, (Kentucky Saddler),mount up and ANOTHER Friggen Bear attacks and kills the new one......2 Horses in 2 minutes:damn:
The Story has been top notch so far ,more a "Wild Bunch" western than a John Wayne western:up:

Some bad news for us PCers. Rockstar announced that they will not be porting RDR to the pc. It will be console only.
Arclight

Kinda. They said they currently have no plans to do so, which doesn't mean anything. More likely that they're trying to convince people to buy it on console, and when sales decline they do a half-assed attempt at porting it to tap into a new market.
At least, that's what they did for GTA4, in which case we will see a RDR port in about a year or so.

I don't get how people can play shooters on a console using a control pad. I find it impossible when trying to do the same on my pc using a x360 controller.

The game features a auto-aim type deal. You draw your weapon then hold the use weapon button. The game will put the site right on the bad guy/animal. I was having difficulty also until auto-aim. My only problem is bad guys behind rocks....I always keep wanting to throw a grenade. :88)

Hawk you'll get a couple of grenade esc options later in the game. Soon as you hit Mexico it opens up one of them.

I still need to beat it. I'm in the final 3-4 missions, and have beaten all of the challenges and all but one side mission.
The only reason I haven't finished it is because someone has already told me how it ends.

I got to the final mission, where you have to kill such and such a person (not saying who to avoid spoiling it), and instead of engaging in the epic, climactic duel; I just shot the guy while on horseback. Old west driveby style. Had no idea you were supposed to actually confront him. :damn:

My kids looked up the ending but I asked they not tell me. I figured it out. It is not a huge dramatic ending but a ending befitting a western IMO. Rating the game I give it a 10. Great story line, imaginative, the graphics are excellent. Overall just very enjoyable.

Totally agree with 'Hawk.
Brilliant in virtually every way. I just love lurking around in built up areas and watching the folks go about their everyday lives. The saloon in Armadillo is excellent for this. One night in Mexico I actually watched a guy get so drunk he staggerd into a campfire and burnt himself to death!
I once killed 42 grizzlies up in Tall Trees in a single sitting - I must have been right in their spawn point. I found it was best to use the semi-automatic shotgun on them, and give them two shots to the head at close range while using the slo-mo option. Worked well for me. Made a packet by selling the fur, claws etc in Mexico. Cougars are a nightmare. If you don't hear them before they attack you are pretty much dead.
So much to do, and so much to see. Fantastic. I've forgotten the number of times I have watched a sunset/sunrise and been totally mesmerized by the sheer beauty of the visuals. The thunderstorms are easily the best I have ever seen in any game.
And the great thing is when you have "completed" the game you can still go on playing. 140 hours plus now - talk about value for money.
I bought the X-box version. My box is attached to a 17" flat screen and the visuals were nice and crisp. I saw the PS3 version round a mate's on some massive HDTV and the graphics were blocky and indistinct, with less grass detail etc. Not as good as X-box in my opinion.
Whichever version you get you are in for a treat. Could not be more highly recommended. Get it - now!

Mike

Oh I agree that you are in for a treat! The two features I like that made the game enjoyable was the auto-aim option and the slow-mo gun action if you so desired. Slo-mo gun fights were awesome. Just a lot of fun for me. I did not fool with the animals to much. The cougars do suck though. Once I planted bait then walked off a bit to see what would come....damn cougar got me in about 5 seconds of dropping the bait! I did not fool with bait anymore. :haha: Granted I did not do a lot of the side things such as getting outfits for my character but overall it did not take or add to my gaming experience. Horse mechanics was nice as well. I'm playing Assassins Creed right now and the horse mechanics do not come anywhere near what Rockstar did in Red Dead. I hope there is a second one.

It's full of brilliant touches.
Listen to the American novice nun trying to recite the Lord's Prayer in the chapel at Las Harmanas. Hilarious!
The animation of the horses when I first saw it made my jaw drop. Perfect.
In fact it's so brilliant I'm off for a little gun-play now.

I was running a night watch job in Blackwater when i went to breakup a fight between two guys. So I lasso the first guy and as soon as he faceplants on the ground my character yells "AMERICA... land of the free".
I almost fell over laughing and by the time i picked up my controller again the other guy had run away.
IF it were up to me, I'd vote RDR for game of the year. It's legacy continues with the new DLC coming out soon, the second DLC in less than a month, not even 6 months after release!

You get used to the gamepad after a while. I'm quite good at hitting targets now than in the beginning. However, hitting moving targets while on horseback is a bit difficult. :)
But it would probably be too easy with a mouse and keyboard, at least that's what I've experienced with some GTA games on PC.

For me it was until I discovered the auto-aim option. Once I turned it on the game became 100% enjoyable. One gets tired of tracking numbers and gaining some new weapon by doing this or that. For me I just played out the story on easy mode and love it through and through.

Since Red Dead redemption will never see PC, there is a pretty good alternative.
Call of Juarez. Just D/Led it off steam the other day and its pretty good.
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=call+of+juarez&aq=f
edit: There's acutally two Call of Jaurez games titles. It's the 2nd one is subtitled "Bound in blood" and is a prequal and improves over the first title. So if you had to get one of them, get bound in blood.
edit: I love the gritty and rawness of this game. lol
