Silent Hunter 4 had the best, their default captain name for the U-Boat missions was Bernard von Unfal. Bernard of Misfortune. :)

Guilty also

In fairness, if i leave a few letters out of my christian name then add von and leave my surname as-is, the name kinda sounds like i came from a french/german background

(that's my excuse anyways :P )

I use "Captain von Trapp", the guy in "The Sound of Music" never escaped and was put in a U-boat.

Captain von Keldunk

Come to think of it...

I have never used "von" in a name on any SH series

"Von" was historically used to distinguish nobility. Since most U-boat men were from working class families, the "Von" preposition would have been very infrequent for a U-boat man to have. So I don't use it.

How's that for rivet counting?

Always have, ever since I was a little kid. And be damned anyone who therefore thinks that I'm a Nazi glorifying romanticist sypathiser. :D

In fact, 0.5%.

My listing of 42,002 U-boat crewmen* shows that 235 were "vons", ranging from the humble Mtr through to GenAdm (ie von Friedeburg). In all, 64 vons were enlisted men, the remainder 171 were officers.

This includes three von Barons (of which two were enlisted)

Now, how's that for rivet counting? :O::D

Since the mother of all U-boat sims I play with my "germanized" name: Markus and always with German speech though I am Dutch.

I only ever use 'Von' in WW1 Flight sims.

In other simulators I use Sven Hassel characters for when I'm playing as a German, Catch-22 and Dr Strangelove characters for when I'm American and Blackadder characters for my British alter ego's.

Indeed, i pose another question within title question:
"How many German members use von in your captain's name"?
I doubt very many :O:
We Germans (me at least) consider it sooo old hat :O:
Must be a "non-German" thingy. :salute:
Sorry for possibly hijacking...
carry on.

I suspect that you are right - it is a non German thing , and it's all to do with stereotypes.

You see (and I am a Brit) if I play a Brit during WW2 , I would probably call myself "Tommy Smith" :03:

Also guilty as charged. Respect to JScones and it's interesting to hear from our German friends re cultural differences.

I am English and I agree with robbo it is a stereotypical name to use in the same way I think many people would use 'de' as part of their name if their character was French eg Charles de Gaulle.
