Hi all,

After playing SH3 all week, decided to come back to view some lovely SH5 graphics. Unfortunately the software gods have other plans;

I have a problem when loading the game,if I select any mission or save it starts to load, then once loaded (and I hear the slight 'clicking' that usually indicates the game has loaded) the screen goes black, then crashes to desktop. I've tried this with mods on and off, I've even re-installed the game, error details below.

Faulting application name: SH5.exe, version: 1.1.5.0, time stamp: 0x4b8a9cbe
Faulting module name: MSVCR90.dll, version: 9.0.30729.4974, time stamp: 0x4b7a226f
Exception code: 0xc0000417
Fault offset: 0x0006ccb5
Faulting process id: 0x14e8
Faulting application start time: 0x01cae3c020e18d6b
Faulting application path: C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\SH5.exe
Faulting module path: C:\windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a 1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4974_none_50940634bcb759cb\MSVCR 90.dll
Report Id: b9956ea9-4fb3-11df-8784-a0a9f7decdcf

I posted this on the Tech support on the UBI forums, but wondered if anyone over here may have any ideas?

Cheers,

Sev.

Might try replacing MSVCR90.dll. You can download it here (http://filepod.com/?q=msvcr90+dll). Computer tech support will probably advise reinstalling the operating system, as painful as that can be.

Did it run OK before without any problems and this just started? You said that you decided to "come back" to SH5, so I am guessing that it was working fine the last time you ran it...but I am just confirming that is the case.

If it did run fine before, what was the last mod you installed? Was it installed through JSGME or manually?

If mods were installed manually, did you also change any of your config files manually as well?

I know that this a lot of questions, but they can help to isolate the reason for the error you are getting.

Yup, was working fine last wednesday when I last played it. The only new mod that I'd put on was the updated version of DarkWraith's UI mod. Haven't done any manual changes at all. Plus, I've even tried running the game from a fresh install (uninstalled and reinstalled game) and still getting the same problem. :(

Hmmmm. Darkwraiths mod is a rather complex PITA to install, although well worth it when it is set up and running...something could have gone screwy there, but I would think a re-install should cure that.

If you are running Vista or Win 7, did you install to the "Program Files" (default) directory? Perhaps it is not uninstalling something, and on re-install it is not updating whatever it left behind. I agree that you may want to download and replace the MSVCR90.dll file...but that should have happened when you did the re-install. In any case, it is worth a try to do what Capt_Sluggo said anyway.

You may also want to check the game directory after you uninstall the game and make sure that the uninstaller is not leaving files or directories behind. Perhaps it is leaving your configs or saves behind after uninstalling, so when you re-install they are not overwritten. (just a guess, but I had that problem with another game)

AHA! Sorted it!

It turned out that installing Visual C# 2008 had messed it all up, apparently SH5 doesn't like Visual C++ 2008 redist - I had to un-install all my 08 redist stuff, and then download and re-install Visual C++ 2005 redist - all works a charm now!

Dang microsoft stuff!

Thanks for all your replies chaps!

I'm having the same problem--so I uninstalled all the C++ programs, and noticed when re-installing SHV, that it used C++ 2008 redistributable--not 2005? Did yours install 2005?

Can't say that I'm sure. TBH I thought that SH5 used C++2005 but can't say for certain. Perhaps the version of that DLL that I was getting a problem with isn't altered between 05/08 - Might be worth re-installing C++ redist 2008 and see what happens.

2008 on the disk

Hm, interesting. I'm wondering if my version of MSVCR90.dll got corrupted somehow, and if installing any version of C++ redist would have worked. Let me know how you get on!

Hi,

I just had the same problem, uninstalling the 2008 redist solved it. Thanks for the hint.
Just installed the game for the first time and it crashed the way you described.

Additionally I have MSVS 2010 installed, so you can be sure that this won't be a problem for the game if that's the case for any of you.
