View Full Version : Upgraded Video Card and now stutter fest
Hello
I upgraded my vid card from a Nvidia 8800 Ultra to a ATI 5850 Toxic.
Problem is now SH5 is stuttering noticable all over the place.
The game was silk smooth with my previous card, so I am at a loss to why a more powerful card should struggle...
Other games are running as I expect.
Is there a known issue with ATI and SH5? Oh I am using the 10.3 Cat drivers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
G

After updating my drivers to 10.3 I noticed the same stuttering.
All I have done so far is turn antialising off and seems to work, but other than that I have no idea mate... :06:

You installed a card that's called "Toxic", what do you expect? :D:O:
Tried turning off VSync? Made sure you installed the DirectX off the game disc? Turning of AA will help, but with a ridiculous card like that, you should be able to have that and shadows on and not even skip a frame.

it must be driver related. i have a q6600 with a cheap little 4600 series and it runs flawlessly. a card like yours shouldn't be having any trouble

I think its the driver, I was running fine on my 5870 until 10.3 no I've got a slide show in the control room but everything else runs upwards of 110fps and beyond, but I come down that ladder and the control room sucks me into 20fps or so.... until I get thru the hatch on either side of the control room.

It has to be related to the drivers. If you updated them recently try to go back to the previous version maybe try couple of them back.
Anyway, considering my bad experience, why would you go from nVidia to ATI. That in my opinion is a huge step backward. :D

I had it bad with my 4870x2, turned off vsync and everything is smooth. I haven't noticed any tearing either.

Yeah I always thought nVidia was a little better than ATI, but I think the gap has narrowed and they're both pretty much the same today. I know some games prefer one over the other. Maybe SH5 prefers nVidia?

I think nVidia cards had alot more problems with SH5. Mostly to do with shadows. This is the first time I've heard of an ATI card with problems for SH5. but it sounds more like a driver prob.... roll back to previous driver and all should be fine again. I got an HD 4870 and i've not had any problems. using driver 9.12.
And as for which is better between ATI and nVidia....... I'm an ATI gamer myself. But it's always been a close race and they often swap the lead, It's ATI in the lead ATM with the Radeon 5870 (fastest card on the market ATM)..... And yes some games sometimes prefer one over the other.

NVidia has slipped behind ATi in the past two-three years. Drivers support is also much better with ATi than Nvidia. They have monthly official (WHQL) releases for the past 5-6 years. Their driver team is also very responsive.
I don't know if SH5 is a TWIMTBP title, but Nvidia has been caught red handed providing support or other "incentives" to the developers, so that their game would run slower on ATi hardware or with missing features.
Basically, when NVidia produce a solid architecture like it has been the Geforce4 or the recent series 8000 they stick to the rules, otherwise, they'll resort to dirty marketing techniques, cheating in games, driver that will lower rendering quality, games "dis-optimized" for the competitors.
There's lot of firms in the IT area which should learn the meaning of business integrity.

Like Kylania said, try with V-Sync Off and restart the game.
I use a 4870 here and experienced high stutter when rotating the view with the mouse turn V-Sync Off fixed the problem.
When panning with keyboard no problem at all, strange...
Mouse problem or video driver problem ?
Using Logitech MX Revolution by the way, yours ?

I had this problem last year when I moved from an Nv 8800 to an Ati 4890 on Vista.
I tried lots of things and I hate to say this but the only thing that fixed it for me was a clean OS install of Win7.
The only rational explanation I could think of was an Nvidia driver or codec somewhere that did not get removed in the uninstall and upgrade process, perhaps it wasnt registered correctly with Vista.
2 things you can do
1) Turn off Vsync
2) Reinstall OS. Windows has NEVER been found of changing the video drivers.

Hiya's,
In game options i have to turn off V-Sync
I have AA on max (furthest right)
3D clouds i find drop fps so mainly have these un-checked
Shadows Off (think the fps drop is a bug to be fixed ? )
Light shafts off (my preference)
Windowed mode Off
Running 4890 xfire (no xfire due to game bug to be fixed) @ 1920x1200 Q6600 @ 3.6ghz and 8gig Mem in Vista x64 (sh5 installed direct to C:
Now as for driver options ...............
I have tried leaked/official and Preview
At the moment i am on Preview 10.4a off ati's site
Settings thus far in CCC are .................
AA - use app settings
Af x4 - (i'm still messing with this setting)
Cat AI - Disabled
Mipmap - High Quality
Wait for vert refresh - Off unless app specifies
Adaptive AA - Off
Triple Buffering - Off
So many variations but these for now until high fps rate killing mouse movement bug is fixed and hopefully the lack of xfire due to v-sync problems
Maybe use the above settings as a "ballpark" to get your card running smooth
Hope this might help you and maybe others
added ............ for ati
Ohh i have used driver cleaners with no ill-effects but some report problems, so just use ctrl panel remove options in windose, and install driver
Some leaked/beta ati drivers won't fully install unless previous drivers were removed, BUT, as a whole ati drivers are over-the-top-install, meaning say you have official 10.2 you just install 10.3 without having to remove 10.2 driver, if a new driver seems to install in under 20secs you can bet you need to remove previous driver first or you'll never get a fully working driver/ccc
5870HD here;
Had stuttering until I turned vsync off. Runs great however I do still have frequent mouse issues in first person view but not in external camera view. It will "catch" or change sensitivity. I don't know if it's video related or not.

Dedeye, from scouring different gaming/driver forums it seems it's solely a bug in the game
The more fps you get the more "glitchy" the mouse acts when below deck
AFAIK isn't this fixed in patch 1.2 when it arrives ?
(seems poor that the better your rig the more problems you get lol)

Just updated to latest drivers for ATI yesterday, I'm on a 512mb HD4870 / i7 / 6Gb DDR3.
Only problem I see is the mouse lag when panning round on the bridge.
I always have v-sync enabled with triple buffering.
Promised patch will improve performance hopefully.

I get 70 FPS near the Attack Scope and 10 FPS in the control room.

I was getting 10fps in the control room with a t5500cpu and x1700 graphics card LOL . Wildly varying fps with diffrent setups . The game certainly could be optimised better . I have a pretty good rig now and dont have any problems at all . No lag or jerky mouse or anything , just smooth gameplay .

Same here, what is starting to worry me is the fan going mental in the CR and the temperature reaching 100 C...

Yes, I hear you with the fan speed. I even added another fan which is attached to the side of my case via a bracket to direct cooling air to the GPU. But it still kicks up a racket!
If this is commonplace I'm sure they'll fix this through patching.

There is only one thing we can do and thats to wait for this dam patch.
I used to have a 8800 ultra, till it died on me, SOB....SNIF.
It was a wonderful card but never got the chance to run it on SHV.
I bought a GTS250 which seems to run pretty well on any game I
throw at it exept SHV!
I also get severe lag, stutter and jolts in or out of the sub.
I used FRAPS and got an average of 40 to 50 fps at 1680 1050
I hope UBI fix this problem because the game is totally unplayable for me
Dont let us down UBIsoft. Pleeeeeese!!
OK, so I played around with the settings in the Catalyst control centre.
A few things seemed to have made a difference:
- First ATI doesn't seem to like overriding Anti Aliasing, so I had to set the option to use 'Use Application Settings', otherwise AA does not work
- Also set Anisotropic filtering to 'Use Application Sttings'
- Set Catalyst AI to off or standard
It seems ok now.. but I still feel that it is not quite there yet, much better than before and still very playable.
Hopefully the next patch will also introduce performance fixes.
Thanks,
G

Info on the russian patch reckons the interior high fps glitch is fixed in 1.2.0
So my thinking/hoping is, now xfire and v-sync will be workable and obviously the mouse flick-show high fps glitch has gone (only way to get xfire working so i read was to enable games v-sync but this made the mouse so flickery it wasn't even funny)
And i noticed that ccc doesn't overide the AA sh5 settings (hmm maybe mess with the cfg)
Anyways, glad to hear things have improved for your gaming experience
ps: there's a bug where if AF is enabled the trees on land are blocky (was in sh4 too) so when up close n personal the treeline looks like new yorks skyline

Also switch anti-aliasing mode to Multi-Sample AA .

I noticed that xfire was not working , so i did the rename the .exe file to fear, and I don't know if it is working. The ATI symble does not show in game when I select it to be. BUT any way, after doing that I noticed that my game was slow as a drunk sloth. I hope they at least fix that problem. It does look a little better with both cards running, but is like a slideshow. One card how ever is fine and works great.:DL
Danged if I do Danged if I don't.:nope:
@sober, when I don't use the Use System Settings option for AA it didn't have any AA applied at all...
Are you saying I can override it and it will work, but that I have to use the Multi-Sample AA setting option? I used Adaptive AA before but it did,'t work.
