View Full Version : Minor graphical issues

Hello to all! I'm a first time poster, but have been hanging around since SH3 (and played since the very first SH. Anyone remember those robotic-like "Up periscope" sounds? :DL)

So... I thought I'll ask here if anyone else is experiencing the same (minor) issues with the game:
1) No matter what I set up in my graphics card and/or game settings, all the ropes on ships look "un-antialiased" and partially transparent or saw-toothed-depending on the distance.
2) Dynamic shadows are killing my FPS. Now, I read that the patch will (hopefully!) improve the performance inside the sub, but I have troubles outside, too.

My computer should handle the game just fine (Intel Core i5, 6GB RAM), but I'm not so sure about the graphics card, which is Nvidia GeForce GE220, which - while holding 1 GB dedicated memory - I suppose to be the bottleneck of my hardware.

Just had to add as I don't write very often: Despite all the criticism I've read here in the forums, I still believe this game will be something that will be referred to be "The Subsim" when the years go by; it just has so much potential, in my opinion. By the developers? No. I believe that, when released, the patch will open doors for the "big scale" modders.

Best regards,
Elsilhe

Welcome aboard! While the GT 220 is a pretty low end card, it's more than the minimum specs from what I can see. Personally I'd suggest turning off (or down) the shadows. Even with my GTX 260 shadows can really slow things down. They look great, but can really slow you down.

Thank you mate!

I have disabled the shadows, allright - no meaning to play otherwise. The game was just barely playeable (with shadows at the minimum) while at the conning tower, but when inside the sub the game CRAWLS! And while they add a lot depth and immersion to the game, gameplay comes before eye candy.

Have to say, it still looks very good without the shadows, but knowing that I could have even more makes me wonder about updating the hardware... :D I was aware of the my graphics card's weakness when I bought this computer. But... that's what you get when you don't assemble it yourself!

So, my graphics card sucks enough that I can't turn on the shadows. But what abaout the ropes? Is it Nvidia driver issue, or is it just my machine's problem?

Well the "Jaggies"(jagged edges) as I call them has to do with the AA settings. You can increase this AA in SH5's graphics options, but higher AA settings also equates to lower performance since it will take up more memory.

Also I found that turning off the V sync helped my FPS massively.

Thank you for the replies. Now, I wish I'd been more specific. I have tried turning on EVERY option the game has to offer, including AA which I thought might do the job. But no. Even AA to the max (8x or 16x), it still draws the ropes with "Jaggies" (:D) And yes, I have the V-sync forced off by default.

So it must be my card afterall... This is definetely not a gamekiller, but it's irritating especially when you look through the binoculars and everything else seems smooth as baby's bottom, except those damn ropes!

Or then I'm just oversensitive :DL

Yeah your card may not have the AA ability needed. I'd look into your display properties and see what AA settings are there and how high it can go. Or it may be over riding the game's setting.
Som cards perhaps cant go any higher than 2X or 4X, so it wont matter how high you set this in the game's options, it wont go any higher than the cards capability allows.
