i am new to the game. i started my carrer and the first mission is "patrol celebes sea" i went to the location and sank 13 merchant ships and one war ship. the message board still says patrol incomplete? i am out of torps and deck gun ammo. i spent over a month at sea in this area nad still patrol is incomplete. so i have gone to all the sub bases and won't let me end patrol. any ideas how i am goffint this mission up?

Welcome aboard,

Most of the time you have to stay within a certain patrol area set out in your orders. They might say patrol within 75 nm of this area for 72 hours, try to stay within that area, best way is to use a the compass and draw a circle of the patrol area. Good Hunting :salute:

To add to what G2B stated, you have to do as he stated (stay within a certain distance of the star for a given amount of time) to "complete" the mission BUT you do NOT have to complete your mission to end your patrol. You must go to the base with the "tilted" anchor to end your patrol. It is your home base. If you started at Pearl Harbor it should be Pearl Harbor. If you started at Manila, Asiatic Fleet, your base may have changed since the Japanese captured Manila. You can use the other bases to Refit, (refuel and rearm) so you don't run out of fuel, in case you used too much looking for your base.

If you end your patrol without completing your mission objective, you will not get the extra "renown" points. If you do this too many times you may be relieved of duty.

If you started in Manila, look south maybe even all the way to Fremantle.

I recommend you read some of the items in here:

especially under "Commonly asked questions" read "helpful hints and information". There is one section on Patrols that is a bit misleading. In the stock game, with no MODs the "Patrol" mission star will have binoculars on it. That is when you will have to stay in a certain area for a certain time. (I go sit on the star and use time compression to get it over with then continue) The other type is a "Sink" mission (although it won't state that). The star will have a flag on it. You only have to reach the flag, it will turn grey and then you get a second objective of sinking ships, usually 10,000 tons.

How strong does that apply? There are several times that Fox Traffic will call for support from 'all patrol units' in an area, and I'll lend a hand tracking down some incoming IJN TFs, report the convoy, and often times am directed to attack it. It occasionally happens that I'll have three or four of these sub-objectives from ComSubPac, and I never really get around to the original patrol that I was assigned. Any idea if such diversions still count against you?

Best thing to do is complete your patrol objective before going off to help out in other areas. If you are in a very high traffic area for your patrol area and just want to grey the star best thing to do is go to the star, submerge and time compress until the star greys (usually 2, 3 or 4 days)

pretty good for your first patrol! Especially if you are using manual targeting.
My boat is looking for a new captain.....

It doesn't really count against you, you just don't get the renown points you would have gotten if you completed the mission. Where the problem comes in is if you are not completing your objectives and you are not sinking ships then you could be relieved of duty. Especially early in your career before you have done much.
For example if you leave base do nothing and return, then do it again, on the third time you are done. As long as you are sinking some ships it may not be anything to worry about. But for example if you are just learning manual targeting and not sinking anything, you should make sure you complete your objective (if it is a patrol) or you could risk ending your career.
