Large convoy and I can't see a thing through the scopes, fire a salvo thinking I really cannot miss with all these targets just sitting there...

...but I do. :o Hopeless.

So, surface attack -

Starts off OK, but can't see a thing; had to crash dive after an armed ship opened fire. Regrettably I'm in ankle deep water and crash into the sea bed, inflicting serious hull damage.

But the gun crew (once they got their asses in gear) had a good eye -

Apparently, objective complete, even though I don't know what the hell I'm doing...
Thanks to Dark Wraith's UI mods to make commands easier.

Home again, calm waters

On a side note, I'm reading 'Das Boot' and in that it refers to depths in feet?
I always assumed it would be metric, which is correct for the period?

I think the translation was aimed at the US market. (As far as I'm aware they're still using imperial measurements?)

It threw me when I read it too!

More than for the period, the correct units for the nation are metric, which most of Europe was using then for decades.

You are probably reading an american translation whose translator decided to translate units to imperial system.

That's an issue in many books, sometimes translators or editors choose to change the units from the original to local, but it's historically unaccurate and misinforming. I've had it happen both ways, some american or british books (uncorrectly) translate metric to imperial, but I also have some spanish books where they've translated imperial info into metric. For me, both cases are deeply wrong.

Sometimes (as I think they should, if they want to change anything) they note the data in both systems, so inexpert readers can get an idea of the data they are reading.

That's MultiUIs for SH5 w/TDC 1.7 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166093) from TheDarkWraith. It's quite an amazing UI mod that fixes broken features, restores missing features and introduces entirely new features.

Wouldn't be without it! Simply must have mod! <DW The Best!>

Thanks for replies- the paperback edition of 'Das Boot' I am reading is a Cassell reprint bound in GB- nothing special.
In fact I ordered it through AbeBooks.co.uk (hope its OK to mention this site on here) and picked up a brand new copy for 60p plus postage! Crazy really, gratifying that there are still bargains out there.
Just getting into it now...

Yes, thought metric was correct but it threw me reading this in the book

OT: btw does your copy of the Cassell edition have 'missing' U-boat numbers? Like instead of saying U-98, it's printed UW or UA. Almost as if it was forgotten by the translator or somebody, before final printing.
I ask because I'd like to know if all Cassell editions are like that. I'm trying to get my hands on a copy showing the boat numbers.

I'm only on page 50- had a quick flick through but I can't see any references to any U-Boat numbers yet.
