Microsoft Flight Simulator X: you need a hell of a rig to run it, but if you have one... boy it is nice.

for combat sim

Janes World War Two Fighters. Came out in 1998, so its old, but it remains one of my favorite combat flight simulators

I played the trainz games for a while . You really need to buy the razorback scenarios though .

I am not really into flight sims , my son has model planes and i would rather watch him fly those .
SH5 will be my only game atm if they fix it and the modders hang around .

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, followed by European Air War, Their finest Hour, Hind and Il-2 for air sims.

Operation Flashpoint as an infantry simulator(if it's allowed) followed by M1 Tank Platoon(first one).

Aces of the Deep for sea.

I know more modern sims are better, more realistic blah blah, but SWOTL, EAW, M1, Op Flash, Aces etc. just had a magic at the time of release for me that meant spending countless hours on them that I haven't done with more modern titles.

Really enjoyed IL-2 for a few years.

Real tricky to fly a plane with a beer and a cigarette on the go though. :DL

So I always tend to come back to Subsims.

Favourite sims, in no particular order:

Aces of the Deep
Silent Hunter 3 with or w/o GWX
T34 vs Tiger
Armored Fist 3
UBM (SH4 add-on)

IL2, Even tho i´m totally crap at it. Its still fun. Back in the days i also played WW2 online, and was mostly flying stuka bombers. Tons of fun.

Flashpoint and ARMA series are the game that covers infantry/armored combat. (Only BIstudios, not the new dragon rising franchise ripoff)

I also enjoy racing sims like GTR / Richard burns rally..

I have a hard time playing arcade style games for some reason. The more "realistic" the game, the better. I guess its because i like games with steep learning curve, It gives alot of satisfaction once you learned to master them =)

I do enjoy to play MW2 online for some reason. Doesn't get more arcade :arrgh!:

Glad to hear somebody appreciates Operation Flashpoint as what it is instead of saying Call of Duty is much better...

Air : Wings of Prey (funny title - bad translation I guess) on realistic mode it is really breathtaking + you can fly hurricanes and spitz aswell as me109s+JU87s

Land : Operation Flashpoint Resistance + WWII mods for that realistic infantry experience

Sea : Silent Hunter 4 + Op Monsun and full manual targetting 100% realism, always trying to recreate das boot (succeeding regularly)

anyway, those are my personal favourites :ping:

Don't get me started on Op Flash! :) The times I spent just crawling and hiding in the bushes, peering through binoculars for threats, just to make a dash for the next tree line....or the mad chaos of combat where you just open up in the general direction of the enemy and then run hell for leather with your squad for cover not knowing if the next whizzing bullet you hear will be the one that gets you. Even Arma II didn't have that feeling. It felt too Ghost Recon like. I just wanted to be a grunt(preferably Soviet/Russian ;)) and not the trend these days where you're always some uber-equipped SpecOps killer.

For me it has to be Rowan's Mig Alley (released in 1998 I believe).

It has pretty realistic flight models, good AI, but most of all it puts you "right there". It has some of the best AI radio communications I've ever seen in a sim (next to Falcon 4) and the campaign is simply a gem: it's really a strategy game inside a flight sim. And then there are those little details: if you destroy enough trucks the enemy will be using mule convoys, or if you destroy their depots they will start hiding supplies in the woods.

On the downside it is plagued by some serious bugs that were never fixed, and the software itself is also rather unstable. In fact I've put the game aside many times in frustration because of this, but I always find myself coming back. And still play it today...

It's pushing it to say it's actually a sim, but for history buffs who also enjoy gaming and have powerful pc's... I'd say Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is a must. The first one was great too, but a little aged now. The game is more of a tactical sim for infantry in WW2. Some moments are better than others and it has more COD influence than it needed, but still worth it. Oh, and some cheesy dialogue too. I give it an :salute:
As for true sim: I guess IL2 was the last one I really got into. Never was very good at combat flight sims though...

Gawd I Loved Mig Alley. Gunfighting at supersonic speeds! Dueling with a Honcho! And if you flew low over a crowd of enemy soldiers you could hear them cursing at you!

It really was the bugs that killed it though. Never could get through the campaign without crashing. Now I can even run it due to my widescreen monitor causing it to be so blocky it's unbearable.

Hotshot mode was amazing, though!

Oh... Favorite sim?

Naval = Fast Attack.

Land - Battlefield 1942 (I attended some awesome LANs playing that game!)

Sea - SH5 (heavily modded)

Air - Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory (Can't remember the name of the mod I'm using, but it adds a whole new level of realism. And still looks awesome for a 2005 game!

Space - X3:Reunion with the X-Tended mod

land: combat mission line, mostly CMBB and CMSF.

air: tie between IL-2, F4AF and Jane's F-18.

Apart from SH3 + GWX 3.0 and SH4 + TMO/SH4 + OM/SH4 +Battle for the Baltic (three separate installs), I also run IL2:1946 (with UP 2.01), Danger from the Deep, Jutland and Distant Guns. The DRM of the latter two, however, put me off ever buying ANY sim with DRM again, including SH5- no matter how good the sim might otherwise be.

Yes! This is a very real simulator. Has an extraordinary physical, and the feeling in flight is very comforting, and combat is great. You need a good joystick to operate and TIR to move the head as in the video. As you learn to start it, you can use an automatic method. The manual consists of 700 pages. The next release of DCS will be the A-10 Warthog. It promises to be another beauty simulation.

Hmm.. Best "real" airplane simulator I have ever flown was Flight Unlimited v3.0 from Looking Glass. It's a bit dated and the company no longer exists but it seemed to have the very best flight simulation physics that I have ever seen in a PC flight simulator. There may be other that I haven't tried yet that are better though. IL-2 is NOT a flight simulator but some kind of war simulator if you want a comparison.

The best helicopter simulator that I have tried has to be Real Flight 3.5 (there is a 4.0 but I don't have it). It is a model aircraft simulator. $200 for it. It HAS to be right or else you crash your real model (more often).

I've only tried SH3 and SH4 for subs/water. So I guess they are the best there is to offer. I never got into tanks much. And cars are usually so way off the mark they are just arcade games. Although I did like indycar and nascor simulators for a bit. And the Dirt Track racing felt sorta realish.

Red Storm Rising on the C64 is tough to beat for me. It came on four cassette tapes (that's 8 sides of tape that had to load!), it was unbelievably immersive though.

People say that you can't expect a Sim to be polished and free of bugs. To them I say, 'DCS Blackshark'. It didn't have 12+ years of development like Silent Hunter 5 either.

Simulations are my game of choice, the majority of the games i own would be considered sim of one type or another. Heres what i'm running right now on my hard drive...

Racing - Test Drive Unlimited (Modded)

Land - Battlefields 1942,Vietnam and BF2, All are setup for single player and i play em all depending on my mood.

Air - Wings over Europe (Modded 30+ gigs and growing!) and First Eagles (Modded w/ Ex Pack) MSFS 2004 (Modded)

Sea - Silent Hunter 3 & 4 (Modded)

RPG - Oblivion and Fallout 3

And if i get bored with that i have MAME,NES,SNES and ATARI 800 emulators.

This was a tough one :)

MMO: Ultima Online (preAoS) / Star Wars Galaxies (preCU) / EverQuest 2
Air modern: Falcon 4.0 (Allied Force) / Longbow 2
Air WW2: IL2 1946 / Secrets Weapon of Luftwaffe
Sub: SH3/GWX3 / Red Storm Rising
Space: Frontier: First Encounter

Fallout series, GTA4, Railroad Tycoon, Sim City 4, EVE Online, Darklands, Wizball, Pirates!, Gunship, Project Stealth Fighter, EF2000, Diablo, World in Conflict, Daggerfall, Morrowind, TiE Fighter, Motorhead, Pinball Dreams, Elite...

Difficult to choose one... but non simulator it would be Ultima Online, had some great experiences back in the days 98-02.

Other simulator would have to be Falcon 4.0 (Allied Force).

Must give a quick shout out to my first love, F-15 Strike Eagle from MicroProse.
I played a whole bunch of better, flashier flight sims after it. But I'll never forget how back in 1985, Strike Eagle made a 13 year old feel like he was a fighter pilot for the first time.

Well I've had many on this computer but most I dont play around with anymore and since replacing the HD a couple years ago I haven't reinstalled most.
But the MSFS series has always been a mainstay, and FSX now resides on it but outside of that and SH 5&3 thats it right now.

Flight is my first love, both sim and R/C. Never have been financially able to go full scale, and since it's now more expensive than ever and given my health I doubt I ever will.
But R/C flying is quite rewarding and challenging enough to keep my flyers heart beating.
