So I set out on a new campaign, it was 1939, war not yet started.

I hit my patrol grid, and on my way home came across a French freighter so for fun I put a few shells into her. I thought if I didn't sink it they wouldn't be mad.

Wrong.

Along comes a destroyer and I have my own Das Boot moment - sitting on the bottom at 50 meters repairing leaks as they DC me. Fortunately they were not very good. Nonetheless, I have never had a compartment flood so badly and not loose the sub. We almost didn't make it.

Finally I patch her up, escort went away, blew ballast and surface, and crawled into Wilhelmshaven. Only to have my own ships start shooting at me!

Fortunately I had the presence of mind to hit ESC, and I was close enough to Dock at Wilhslmshaven! :)

Heh. You shot a neutral ship and were still flagged as an enemy, from the sounds of it. Probably why the KM started flinging shells at you when you went back home to Wilhelmshaven. :)

Good to know this can happen.
Note to self make sure to avoid ports for 24h when accidentally engaging neutrals.

Thanks for the tip.

Before the start of hostilities everything is neutral,,,,you fired on one and made evry neutral deem you an enemy as a consequence.

Not so bad after hostilities commence because only the country of said victim will change their stance against you.

In either scenario the timescale for the change in stance is 24 hours following your act of aggression.
