I have GWX and am thinking of downloading SH3 Commander as everyone says its a must!
But what does it mod? I have looked in the n00b section and the link for the readme file is no longer there (404 file error).
I will also be downloading the WS mod. After seeign the boxes in the pics and they are squares, it make sense to get it, all my partol boxes have be rectangles :damn: (yes I thought they were that way )

It makes life much easier to set up a career and run a campaign in a more realistic fashion much better then stock SH3. :yeah:

SH3 Commander is very useful. You can set the number of days you spend in base before a new patrol, Uboat availabilty, set wave heights, water clarity, reload times on your deck guns. It includes several kinds of fatigue mods that help you manage your crew rotations (there's even a "No Fatigue" model, which is very handy). When you start a new career with SH3C you can randomise crew names and their experience levels. It's also handy for promoting your crew and awarding medals and qualifications (mechanic, flak gunner, torpedoman, etc).
That just names off a few things that it does. Highly recommended by just about everyone I've talked to here.

I'm still promoting and awarding from inside SH3. How do you do that with SH3 Commander?

It's also a stand-alone program, rather than a mod that you enable or disable within the game.
You start up Commander, set the desired game and career options that it can modify or control, then let Commander fire up the game for you. When it does it puts all the settings and options you've selected into the game.
One thing I like about it that I don't think anyone's mentioned is the ability to easily view and print your crew lists, your own personnel file, and to add your own touches to your patrol logs. And you can do these things within Commander without having to load up the game. Very nice. I usually do all those things each time I finish a patrol, along with whatever crew management is necessary. Makes me feel more like a "real kaleun" when I have paperwork to manage in between patrols, lol.

Have a career selected in SH3C and then see your Wehrpass, looking down to "10. Actions". Where it says, "Click to see available actions", do so. Select "Manage your crew" and you'll be able to manage the crew with far more efficiency and realism than inside the game.
There are several threads that suggest how to conform your crew and its awards more closely to history. I recommend Awards and promotions, what's your approach? (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=157627).
SH3C is very, very useful for immersion.

SH3 Commander User Guide (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/documentation/SH3CUG.pdf)
Also crew transfers (in and out), U Boat malfunctions and sabotage, the ability to start a career in any month of the war, fantastic patrol reports that give you ship names, cargo, crew lost etc. randomise crush depth, start careers at sea rather than in port.
And that's just off the top of my head - there is more.
Download the Manual JScones had linked to and give it a quick read.
Seriously, it adds so much to the game, I could not imagine running SH3 without it.

Don't forget to patch SH3 Commander for GWX...
The patch should be over at the GWX site.

start careers at sea rather than in port.
This doesn't work for me for some reason. I've got it checked and I'm playing stock SH3 but I always have to navigate out of the docks...

Are you starting the game via SH3 commander?
Yep, I am. I've had other problems with it too (e.g., not being able to do crew mgmt).
I'm uninstalling everything now and switching over to GWX, so I'll be interested to see if that changes anything.
If running GWX with Commander, you'll need the compatibility file.

Some people have been reporting difficulties in obtaing one or two files from the official website lately.
If that is still the case the file is also available from my FF account (link above my sig).
I just run the stock version of SH3. I had commander as well, and it worked fine. However now when I try to see the Captains profile,or the Crew List --I just get a page looking like a type written page with computer lingo. I've removed Commander and reloaded, but the same thing happens. Any ideas? Also I would love to have some of the mods, but none ever came up like Commander did.
