so do i HAVE to run around telling people what to do, eating soup, ect?

sure its fun for a few minutes but id rather spend my time on the scope or charts (not climbing that damned ladder!).

basically i want to know if i can issue all commands from a hotkey, without having to run around the whole ship.

thanks!

Nope, you don't have to run anywhere. :DL

However, you would need to map keys to all the various things, since they aren't mapped by default. There are both keymap and full UI mods out that allow you to do issue commands from anywhere and even teleport between stations (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSEmtxIE01I). :)

You don't have to tell anyone to eat soup. You can't tell anyone to eat soup. There is no hotkey to tell anyone to eat soup. There is no mod to bind a key to a missing command that tells people to eat soup. Eating soup... that whole thing is just not available - where did you get the eating soup command thing from? You may be disappointed!

Now, if you ask your cook to make soup, then that's a whole different thing, because who needs to be told that they have to eat the special soup that the cook has made? No one! Because it's delicious. Is there a 'make soup' hot key? No, that would be silly. It's not like it's a command that would be shouted from the bridge now is it? Come to new course 120, open outer doors on tubes 1,2,3 and 4, cook soup, fire 1, fire 2, eat soup, fire 3, rinse bowls, fire 4, dive!... nah not very atmospheric is it? However, walking up to your cook in a quiet moment and seeing if he can make a special meal to raise morale, that's quite reasonable. I mean, in a simulation sense, you'd want to do it in a not so busy time, where you'd be able to stroll up to the cook, without, you know, destroyers and such depth charging you. That would be a bit weird for a sim really, a captain ordering a special meal whilst the depth charging was still going on.

You can't issue all your commands from a hotkey, but on the other hand you don't have to run round the whole boat (not ship!) to issue commands.

I am totally going to make a "make soup" hotkey mod! :D And it'll only be available in the presence of a convoy!

If you use Church's Keycommands (or another keymap mod) in conjunction with one of the new UI's, you'll find you don't have to do any running at all. I play 99% of the time from inside the conning tower, with attack periscope a click away, using F3 to get to the map, and going up the ladder to the deck when I need to. Very similiar to SH3 using this method.

This is precisely why I lurk the SH5 forum even though I don't own it.

After seeing that video, the game is looking MUCH sweeter to me.
Soon as there is a Fleet Boat addon or mod, it's mine!

Thanks for posting.

And shmall...
Ease up. Do you play without time compression? Do you go for weeks at a time without showering when you play? Do you isolate yourself from the rest of the world for a month or more in the name of "realism." Do you hotrack with your neighbor during that month?

Submarine life sucks. There are a lot of aspects about it that people don't want to simulate. Climbing up and down ladders to do everyone else's job or give orders happens to be one of those things for some people.

What's wrong with climbing a ladder? Real U-boat commanders did plenty of that.

yes, the only moving you have to do normally (95% of the time) is from the bridge to the conning tower (attack scope) or command room (observation scope) or sonar station. The rest (maps, speed, course, depth, status reports, battle station, silent running, torpedo reloads) can all be handled through hot keys.

I like the walkthrough feature. You almost had that in SH4. But I agree with you, it's really just a cool feature and nothing more. The one-click away stations and controls that we had in SH3/4 are what you need to control a sub. But sometimes, when on a long transit, it's kinda cool just to wander around the compartments, getting a feel for what it was like.

I love the walkthrough feature too... except that darn ladder.

It's not the concept of a ladder that's the problem. My problem is climbing down from the bridge to the control room. Look down just right to climb down the ladder... get to the conning tower... get off the ladder... look down just right... back up... go forward... adjust the vertical angle of my view again... back up... go forward... oh, got it... climb down to the control room.

Oh, that part's a pain. Otherwise, I love climbing up and down the ladder.

But it IS totally believable that when faced with 3 DD's bearing down on you after a successful convoy strike you Order "CRASH DIVE"... and the men refuse to do it because you havent gone back to the cook and asked him "Pretty Please with sugar on top" to make his "Special Soup" (I DONT want to know whats in it) so the men will crash dive in the next 10 seconds our we will ALL become special soup in the Atlantic.

I don't see why people dislike having to dive down the ladder when destroyers show up. In SHIII it was "ah, yawn, another enemy torpedo boat... [C key]", now it's "Damnit, damnit, damnit, get below deck everyone! [tracers buzz past conning tower] Yaaah, duck!".

There is no crew management at all. I thought that it was a bit to much micromanagement in the previous SH's, but they could have made up something else... (make a crew rotation schedule once or something like that.)

I dont have a problem with walking around the U-Boat. I personally see it as one of the big improvements in SH5. For years, posters on the sh3/4 forums have been asking exactly for this, the ability to walk around the whole boat and now that we have it, people complain..:hmmm:

If they patch the sonar guy so we can control him as in sh3/4, you could run everything from the command room, just going up to the bridge or conning tower when you need to.

As it is, I rarely go to the bow or stern, but it is nice to know I can. My boat was recently depth charged and sustained damage in the engine room. After I had slipped away from the escorts, I popped in to the engine room to see how the repairs were going. You could see water spurting from some of the pipes. Unfortunately, there is no damage control animations as in SH4. Hopefully, that will be added in time.

I agree with you on the crew management. The sh3/4 system did require too much micro-management. The SH5 concept of restricting the skipper's interaction to the officers/petty officers actually makes sense, but the present RPG type skills will have to be modded to more realistic naval skills.

You need to use that mod. The animations aren't completely fluid, but one by one the watch crew will "descend" the ladder and move to their posts on the dive planes. :D

One thing about the crash dive thing is that the sequence started even if I am on the bridge. I don't like it only working when I have gone down the hatch.

I end up madly tapping the "c" key, and wondering why I am not hearing "alarm!" as I run to the hatch. It catches me every time

I also remember with SH3 one of the biggest crys was for a sub you could walk around on.

I will take the devs side here....they give us what a lot asked for, even if it is somewhat buggy, and hear nothing but grief. :nope:

That doesnt excuse them or Ubi from trying to implement so much that they didnt have time for a through beta test though.

Install this mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166093) then you can teleport down into the sub and crash dive yourself instantly.
