As the title says, I've got the blues. And my Type II is to blame.

As a Kaleun of the 1st Flotilla, when will I be able to command a boat with a deck gun and more torpedos?

March 41...Type VIIC becomes available.

I feel your pain. The other day, I did a 180 near an injured vessel so I could hit her with a stern shot as I motored away. Then I realized I have no stern tubes...

Or transfer to the 2nd and buy a VIIB.
You'll need 2500 renown for that though.

It's a tough slug. I remember those II patrols without nostalgia. Went for a VIIB the moment had the renown. :nope:

That's what I was thinking.

Why can't he buy a VIIB for R.2500?

He can by transfering to II Flotilla (if I remember right) it takes a while to gether the renown :shifty:

Cool, I hope I make it to '41 then. Haven't survived 1939 in 2 careers so far.

My last patrol saw 17,314 tons from 3 ships. I gotta be extremely selective with 5 torpedoes onboard, so I've let quite a few small ones slide by me, gritting my teeth because the flak deck is always awash when I need it.

Good news is, all 5 shots were hits this time. Full load of fast steamers makes me happy. With my style of approach, I could fire flashing disco balls with an air horn attached...nevermind the bubble trail. There's no getting around a 40kt shot from 600m headed straight at a barn door, unless their deity of choice manages to miraculously lift their ship out of the sea. (And yes, this is possible. I watched a Granville Freighter catch some X-Games air off a wave, it's keel about 2m completely above the surface.)

Good haul in a Canoe
As has been mentioned, once you get over 2500 renown, transfer and you can buy a bigger boat much sooner than March 41.

Woops, I meant to type 13,714.. not 17,314. hehe
Either way, it's my highest haul so far. And I am definitely thinking about the transfer, as playing historically accurate with 1st Flotilla means giving a few lucky allied boats a free pass. I prefer to be the mean man in the toll booth, who gives free passage to nobody.

Heh, currently crawling around in a Type II myself. I've sunk a small bulk freighter -2 torps used on the bugger (Can you say ouch?) - and I haven't even reached my patrol grid. And I probably won't for another few days - there's a reason I stuck the snail emblem on the conning tower :smug:

You'll see, the more you sail in a Type II the more you'll get attached to her. :yep:

Weiss Pinguin
04-19-10, 11:26 AM
Yep. Her small size and agility are nice when the escorts come looking for you, although the lack of a deck gun or large torpedo magazines are definitely a major minus. But on the plus side again, there's not a whole lot of crew management to deal with, which is nice :p2:

I just wish there was a better port to start from - Going through the Kiel Canal is a pain

I've come to a conclusion on this. After having a few really good patrols in a II boat, I think greed is what killed all my VII commanders. The II forcing me to be selective and careful has saved me from death very often. I get too brave with surface weapons and careless with huge torpedo supplies.

I may very well get attached to her by the time 1941 comes around. Which makes me wonder: What other kinds of goodies can be installed to a Type II later? Like radar warning, sonar coat, etc.

I've also heard of people talking highly of a II-D? I think its the D, but not sure. What advantages does that one hold over the regular II?

I am runing GWX, Feb 1940, based in Kiel is the 1st Flotilla and just upgraded to a VIIB at the cost of 2500 Renown. On my 7th Patrol as the first 5 were all in a IIA. Those five torps don't go far :haha:

I cannot upgrade anything else though out of renown!

I agree with you there! I get sunk way more often using the bigger boats in careers. I really enjoy the Black Sea campaign in GWX using the II D, the convoys tend to be quite small anyway, so it feels ok having only 5 torpedoes! Plus the short distances are a bonus.

The II D has significantly increased range (5650 miles @8kn compared to II A's 1600 miles @ 8kn), and later on a conning tower which increases the flak capacity. I think that's about it though, I'm pretty sure it can't have a radar - but it can have the radar detectors, anti-sonar coatings, decoys etc

Try Jimbunas XXIII, it only carries two but it's a pretty interesting sub for those that like the II

Yeah I just downloaded his XXI in 39' mod and I am gonna try and use the XXIII with it in the hope that they dont conflict (The XXIII replaces XXI) that way I should be able to use a XXIII in 39'

That sounds like a plan - also not quite as cheeky as using a XXI in 1939:DL!

Won't be able to play for a few months, but looking forward to giving it a go all the same!

The D is always my first upgrade when I start off with the Type II. I never stay with her long enough to get the conning tower, but the flexibility that comes with the larger fuel tanks is worth the renown.

Das OKM gibt bekannt:

Any commanders who voiced dissatisfaction with the type II will receive new boats as soon as the type XXVII is available.

Be more aggressive!

Of course, if you go with the 2nd flotilla and the Type IXs, you'll probably want to bring along a small library - Some of those patrols can last AGES.

Type II is the true definition of power. You just can't use it. It's not made to get you laid, man. It's a full-fledged war machine.

If you don't like the Type II in the Atlantic, try the GWX Black Sea campaign where you find your little Dugout Canoe at the top of the naval combat food chain. The Black Sea has short transit times to station, fewer aircraft, small targets that one torpedo can often kill and poorly equipped escorts. It makes a nice change from the North Sea, Western Approaches, Coastal Command and the RN.

Good Hunting.

Actually, it wasn't until a month or so ago that I learned that you could actually use the Kiel canal :88) This latest career is the first time I haven't gone the long way round. Now I don't have to plan out my patrols to the last whiff of diesel fumes...

So did I, the first time, or the first five times. But after a while, the scenery pales.

It does get tiring. And after the first few times, it's even worse if you went through it repeatedly in real life and are thoroughly sick of it.
