Is there a trick?
I have been chasing a convoy on the surface at flank speed for the past 5 hours, with occasional dives to check its position, but my batteries are still only at 85%. I have been making sure that my chief has given the order to recharge batteries. I even slowed down to full speed at one point for 30 mins, but it did not help.
My boat was depth charged yesterday and at one point the Aft Battery was offline and down to 7%, but all systems are now back to 100%.

I've never had a problem recharging my batteries, that said I've not had them damaged yet either.
It could be as a result of the damage I guess - a few cells destroyed.
That said it could also be a bug lol.

I've never had a problem either but I did notice that the batteries were taking their time to charge when using TC
You can recharge at flank / full speed? Always thought you could go at half at best (one engine needed for running the generator). Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think the recharge rate changes depending on how fast you are going. Try slowing down to 1/3 speed for a while. It may also be due to crew abilities/morale, not sure about that one though.

It has no diference chaging at flank/full than the other speeds.
When you recharge you command only the one engine the other is always at flank speed. check the RPM meter above the telegraph on the command center or in the conning tower.

This Remark good sir, is possibly the answer to many a poor thread title posted in sh5 forum. Good stuff. :salute:

Good idea, I will check. The batteries are recharging but very slowly, from 70% to 85% in 5 hours.
I can't really afford to slow down now. I am in medium fog and my only link to the convoy I attacked yesterday is a sound contact to an escort moving fast.

use some promotion points to speed things up with the motor officer.

I think I solved the mystery. It appears to be tied with using flank speed which I rarely do.
At Flank, both engines are showing 500 RPM.
At Full, the port engine shows 400 and the starboard engine 500 RPM. I presume 100 RPM on the starboard engine comes from running the generator.
I used Full for 30 mins trying to match course and speed with the escort off my starboard bow and the batteries are recharging faster now.
Trying to track a convoy in the fog with map updates off and the no hydrophone on the surface mod is a bitch. I have to race blind for 30-45 mins, hope I dont run into an escort at pointblank range and then dive to catch a sound bearing. I thought the escort was moving east at 7 knots, but now I think he is heading southeast. Time to go back to flank speed. :damn:...I havent had this much fun in a long time...:ping:

When you rechargin batteries you can notice that one propeller is stopped.
Thats because one of the driving shaft is attached to the elecric generator. So the recharging time is indipendent from the speed you're moving...
You can notice also that the diesel rechargin batteries always works at 500rmp :arrgh!:
sorry for my bad english :oops::oops:

just did a little experimenting, recharging batteries results in a big hit to speed.
Flank speed with recharging batteries: 13 knots.
Flank speed without recharging batteries: 17 knots.
this was less of an issue in SH4, but probably has to do with the fact that U.S. Flet Boats had 4 diesel engines rather than the 2 in a Type VII.
