Unwritten law for rookies to struggle - I only bagged one light steamer on my opening patrol, but bagged five on my second :yep:.....Until a flower corvette bounced a D/C off my bow and rendered me sunk due to flooding!
AND I was on for a good-un as well - prob logging at least 15,000GRT with the five kills I got! :damn:
B****DY surface patrols! :damn:

Yeah I just did my first patrol. Sunk a huge cargo ship for like 4k tons. So I'm pretty happy. And I will check out that thread, thanks.

Yeah I sucked at first, mainly cause I started on 100% realism and also I sucked just after I installed OLC GUI. But Now I'm doing good
my current patrol: 60000+tons 12 torpedoes remaining IXC
You'll get the hang of it in no time. I recommend you sink all merchants 4000ton and less with deck gun if your having trouble with torpedoes, that way you will still get alot of tonnage. One tip is that the AOB and speed are pretty important when making your solutions, also get in close. (1000m) try to take shots when your AOB is 90 or 270, and make sure you identify nationality, you don't wan't to be sinking german ships

Haha yeah, I'm just now reaching my first patrol zone. Can anyone tell me what a green ship is on the map? Blue is allied and red is enemy, green = neutral?

Bingo.
It will cost you renown, and as KL-Alfman noted will also begin a 24-hour state of war between you and that ship's nation of origin. Meaning any other forces you encounter from that nation will attack you without warning or additional provocation.

This. :DL
I remember sucking on 688 Attack Sub, Silent Service, etc.
But with all the 3D and control enhancements that make modern sims more lifelike, I suck less now. You gotta admit, even if you knew what you were doing, those old games cheated you really hardcore and that was the 'difficulty'.

predictable way everytime I play.

I still have fond memories of my very first patrol, when I ran into something interesting.
According to the map it was Denmark.

My first memory of SH3, was before any supermods.
It was daylight, no clouds, no rain, glassy calm seas, I was in a type 7, creeping along at 1/3d speed (i don't think i had any notion of specific knot speeds yet), silent running, i had 14 to 20 meters of water underneath my keel, and i was trying to sneak into scapa flow, through the front, since there was no other way in.
And then, as i peered through my periscope, i noticed this destroyer Waaaay off. I thought, "hes so far away, i should get by him no problem", ill just be reaaaalllly quiet.
Umm,, no, he made a beeline for me, at which point i remember saying, "WTF! OMG No freaking way!!" After he pounded me into the sea floor, i exited the game thoroughly pissed off, cursing, "BS! That was complete utter BS!" as i turned off my computer and stomped off.
A couple days later, i was back at it again.

twas a good day for me that a GIGANTIC american ship did not sink to the bottom of the harbour after about 4 torpedos. it was 1940.

Yep, sucked big time at first.
Even at zero realism getting into a good position to fire an eel was more a matter of luck than judgment for me.
And my evasion procedure consisted of me crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
Stick with it PvtJamoo, it get's easier.
And once it all falls into place, it becomes the most addictive substance known to man.

We left Bernard in charge of the cleanup operations.
I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but we had to leave him somewhere and Denmark was convenient.

I always remember how relatively easy it was to remain surfaced and shoot dozens of aircraft out of the sky....till a few mods later when I suddenly realised every patrol I undertook ended with a sinking....from aircraft

Bernard has been given safe conduct to Sweden, where he has been given a job in the iron ore mines that supply Germany with steel.
Hope the quality of your next boat is as good as the last.

Well,
I suppose this explaination might help describe my 1st patrol skill .....
According to what I have learned ... the boiling point of water greatly reduces as the pressure around it drops, this effect on water is what causes "cavitation" or those bubbles you see coming off the props. Let's just say that my suckage was such ... my type VIIb looked like it was in over-carbonated water. :D
["Hey ... look at that patch of boiling sea ... you think that is some sort of magma vent over there?" ... *stoically* "No, that is U-41 ... maiden voyage."]

I did that on my first patrol, too! :har::har:
Ever run at flank speed and attract your own homing torpedo? I did. Sped right along thinking everything was honkey-dorey and all of a sudden *KA-BLAMMO*! Lost the engine compartment and had no way to RTB. :yep:
OTOH, if you play it just right you can use your own engine noise to guide those homing eels back toward their intended target. Nailed a pesky destroyer that way once. :DL
Or just me? :P
4 years in - still learning. read the history books too, first hand accounts and the more factual like Michael Gannons's Operation Drumbeat. a classic!
you will know so much more about your boat and crew after reading this.
you can order it from Amazon through Subsim, got my copy for a couple of £'s...
...dont give up AND ask lots of questions :yep:
