View Full Version : Victory Day
On May, 8-9th in my country the Victory Day (the end of the Great Patriotic War and the Second World War end in Europe) is celebrated. For the first time armies of allies will participate in parade on Red Square (the USA, England etc.). Interestingly, and except Russia this day somewhere celebrate? Write, very interestingly.
No celebrations here (that I'm aware of) but I am looking forward to seeing this years parade through Red Square.

You will see company of Polish army in parade on Red Square. We had fourth army during WW2 (after Soviet Union, USA and Great Britain).
When we were Warsaw Pact member Poland celebrated Victory Day same time as Soviet Union. After 1989 we celebrate VD one day earlier, like USA, Great Britain and rest countries except Russia.
For the first time will show complexes SA-22 Greyhound, very much I wish to see.

I in the childhood very much loved a film "4 tankmen and a dog". Heard that it like in Poland have forbidden. Strange, kind film from the childhood. Just about army friendship between Russian and Poles.

We don't have any celebrations here that I know of (Utah, USA), but I like to commemorate all the 'end of war' days myself.
Your parade sounds pretty cool.
Oooh, Pantsir! I'll have to keep an eye out for that. Spasibo!
Nope, no parades here (what a surprise :O:).
Why people around the world don't celebrate the day? My take is that, and I mean no offence, you russians have your own history book that is very different from the truth. Again, no offence mean't, but you don't have to dig too deep to realise just how much WWII propaganda there still is going on over there.

Tri tankisty, Gruzin and sobaka? Forbidden? No, it's not true. It could be seen some weeks ago in Polish public television. I have it on DVD - one of the best Polish movies about WW2 for children. It was made many years ago as propaganda tv serial, but knowing this you can see it like adventure movie.
Did you hear about "Stake bigger than life"? It was Polish tv serial about Hans Kloss, agent of Polish intelligency working as Abwehra officer behind front lines. Similar to your Stirlitz :DL Fully fictional of course.

I do not think that the majority of Finns wished to be at war with Soviet Union again. A characteristic example - Lappish war (Lapin sota). Though from all countries of allies of Germany of Finland has carried most. Greetings to northern neighbours. :D :woot:

Like that occupation parade in our former second largest city Viipuri.
To commemorate the war against "Finnish fascists that occupied the ancient Russian city of Viborg".
Happy May Day!:woot:

DarkFish, do you know something about Polish 1st Armoured Division and general Maczek or Polish 1st Parachute Brigade and general Sosabowski? Gen. Maczek's soldiers liberated part of Netherland from German occupation and gen. Sosabowski's soldiers fought in Arnhem.

We never wanted to be at war with you guys. :O: It's just... you know... you attacked us, not much of a choice than to defend ourselves. :)

Im not sure is that a threat or some twisted way of belittleling.
The Chuhnas dont celebrate this victory of totalitarianism over half of Europe.
We celebrate our grandparents for keeping us free of these parties.

We can be civil, we can do business but there will never be reconciliation until you give something concrete back.
This is the overwhelming majority view in Finland, order a poll if you dont believe me.
Im not holding you personally responsible but your government celebrates and promotes an attitude and interpretation that Finnish governments or people will never accept.

Yes Susexx, you have right. Gene Hackman as gen. Stanisław Sosabowski. Gen. Sosabowski was a tragic hero. He was a very talented officer, fought during defend of Warsaw in September 1939 as a commander of 21st Infantry Regiment "Children of Warsaw". In England he was founder of first parachute unit in Polish Army, established for fighting against Germans in occuped Poland. Unfortunately British didn't want to send 1st Parachute Brigade to Poland. They forced Polish headquarter to use brigade on Western Front in "Market-Garden" operation. Brigade has lost 50% soldiers in Arnhem. Sosabowski knew and said that "Market-Garden" operation is a big mistake of marshall Montgomery and was dismissed for British wish. After war he worked as ordinary worker. He is a very good example of British "gratitude" for Polish soldiers fighting under British headquarter during WW2.

Hey, wait, you sold Alaska to us. Why do we need to give it back? :) Lol, we will sell you back Alaska, but you cannot afford it :) With interest, you would owe us $33,619,400,154.00 dollars (http://math.about.com/library/blcompoundinterest.htm):shucks:
That's 33 trillion, just in case.

Ah, now I found the quote (heck was in one of my own threads.):
(speaking to finnish troops after the war)
You did not want war; you loved peace, work and progress;
but you were forced into a struggle in which you have achieved
great deeds, deeds that will shine for centuries in the annals of history.
- Mannerheim
Full speech here:

And this is why my blood starts to boil whenever the talk goes to the finno-russo war;
Peace has been concluded between our country and the Soviet Union, an exacting peace which has ceded to Soviet Russia nearly every battlefield on which you have shed your blood on behalf of everything we hold dear and sacred.

If it was that simple i would buy you the whole night.:|\\
If i could decide Finland would offer in exchange to demilitarize the whole border and refuse any military alliances that dont include Russia.
Personally i think that would guarantee true friendship.

Mannerheim was a good general.
Well actually he was half politician and half general, he is like George Washington to Americans.
These are some of our best generals, one thing they have in common is that they were all Jäegers.
Part of the Royal Prussian 27th Jäger Battalion (Königlich Preussisches Jägerbataillon Nr. 27), trained in Locksted, Prussia 1915-18.
Trained to liberate Finland, this batallion was the foundation and cadre of the modern Finnish army.

Congratulations, Tovarisch! Strangely enough Turner is broadcasting "The North Star", a WW2 era propaganda film about the Russians with Dana Andrews and a screenplay written by Lillian Hellman.
On the other hand, This film by Elem Klimov was one of the most harrowing I ever saw about the Great Patriotic War. "Idi i Smotri" or "Come and See."

Be sure to take lots of pics if you go to Red Square. At the SF fiftieth anniversary of V-E Day, We had a contingent of Red Army veterans marching in the anniversary parade with veterans of the French, British, Polish, US and Nationalist Chinese Armies along with US Navy and Marine vets including Pealr Harbor survivors.
As far as I know VE day isn't a holiday anywhere in the states anymore and VJ day is only still celebrated by Rhode Island.

Speaking of the end of the War, they had a show on the history channel:haha: about the Nazi's and the occult. What a weird show:o. I'm surprised Himmler had so much free time on his hands to dabble in all of that stuff, but the craziest thing they had was they used a divining pendulum/rod to find convoys and they actually plotted u-boat patrols from them.
