umm, how do I get the crew off the deck?

Hello all, I have been away from the game for a while as have been poorly and as I had only just started playing it before the gremlins got me, I have now forgotten any tips. At present I am in the North Sea, and I think I am just supposed to nobble any freighters that come my way, so here I am on the surface, unable to dive because I have crew on deck - and I don't remember how to get them off. I looked in the FAQ thread but did not see a reference to this. How do I give commands is my main question then.
I had hoped that Something Wonderful might have happened since I was last here, which would enable me to climb up and down the ladder in less then the four or five goes it takes me now, but I am sure I will get the hang of it, eventually.. however, if I can't tell my crew what to do I can't DO anything except stand around. I had a look in the 'manual' but that did not seem to tell me what I want to know, unless I missed something.

The crew on deck preventing diving is YOU. :) Climb down into the sub then you'll be able to dive. Your crew will follow automatically.

Walk to the middle of the bridge, face towards the hatch and move forward, you'll basically just automatically head down.
