They gave SH5 81%, quote "the drm alone could have sunk this sim, but the carrier command style gaming is worth the battle"

never thought about it being like carrier command but I guess it is a bit, anyway they love the water effects and graphics generally and the tense moments in the game.
The main criticism is That the repetition and slow pace may turn off some.

81% huh, based on the reviews that I have read on other websites that is way too high.

(I have not bought the game)

Obviously only interested in the eye candy, hence the high score, hardly worth taking note of that.

PC Format is a UK print magazine, not sure they post reviews online. The PC Zone magazine review (another UK printed title from the same company) has also been published and gives the game 49%. I think the quality of reviews in both magazines is rather poor and juvenile and in the case of SH usually littered with mistakes like the comparison to Carrier Command above.

Both PC Format & PC Zone are more intent on writing "clever" puns than actually reviewing games properly as the wide variation in scores from two magazines from the same company shows.

No i haven't, why?
If you are alluding as to why i made the comment about only interested in eye candy, well, i was picking up from the O P, who seems to be the only person (so far) who has read the review.
Maybe i should have rephrased the comment to: perhaps they are moreso interested in eye candy.

No, I was just wondering what the general tone of the review was. The OP thought it was a fair review, so I was interested in what others thought. It was a long time ago since I played carrier command, but as far as I can recall, you went round islands, seeding them and battling the enemy carrier. I don't really see how SH5 is like carrirer command at all, but the OP agreed. I asked you for a link, as you responded quickly, so I thought you'd done a search for it, as I couldn't find it.

Not a problem, would also like to read the review, and searched but couldn't find anything.
Maybe the OP has a source link?
Edit: maybe not, as Sonarman points out.

Nope, no online access to that, you have to buy the magazine:

Every review you read will be slightly different, we all see the world through our own eyes differently.

The graphics are outstanding, and the detail in the interior of the boat is as close as they could of got it i think.

DRM is not an issue for me, after a while you forget its there.
Game-play needs some work, but the people who mod the game have done wonders in a very short space of time.

With this new patch on its way, and another one (or two) to follow, this will mature into the best SH yet.

Some people will never be satisfied with what they get, the biggest detractors are the ones that haven't even bought the game yet, but they will slowly be left behind as we sail on to bigger and better things.

Bottom line, give the game time to mature, and it will stop being a game and become a Sim.

Any hoo, thats my two bobs worth, flame away.

Quite right, the review is whether or not the person playing the game enjoyed it, so it's all subjective and you may not have the same views as to what makes a great game (pew-pew!). When reading a review, you have to ick out what would interest you about the game. I've read reviews that got 95% or whatever and didn't really think it would be my cup of tea.

I'm just quite interested in the carrier command comparison.

i would print it but copyright etc.

Carrier command is similar in that you sail around! thats about it.

The review is fair in that they played it and enjoyed playing it and as they dont obviously have much time to play all games never hit many of the bugs.

I still agree that it is a fun game , even as it is now.

Some people here have a very short memory and must play different PC games from me as most games i have played out of the box have some big issues.

Don't want to be technical about this but, on their website it says that they are previewing the game(play).
I thought that preview and review are two different things.
Sorry:

Must have been looking at edition no. 238

81% ... why not.

I would give SH5 a 80% score as it this right now ...

...keeping in mind that the missing 20% will hopefully come with patches and mods.

I would have to give it a 50% seeing how it was half finished. :03:

I try not to think about how the game was OTB anymore. It's sad to think there are people who buy it and have no idea that this forum and modding community exists.
OTB: 50
But the future looks bright.

Isnt it about time people stopped reading (and indeed writing reviews) and just bought the damn game (or not), its been out for ages, if you havent made up your mind by now there is something wrong.

Yes, especially when the game, if you live in the UK at least, is now less than half the price it should be.

From the beginning, I have to tell you that I have the game (as a gift from my brother) but I can't play it because of my old PC. My brother must buy for me a good PC too :har:.
But ... because I am from Romania and I am interested in many things "made in Romania", I read lots of reviews about this game. There are good reviews too. I wonder you are surprised:
http://www.game-debate.com/articles/index.php?a_id=418&game=Silent+Hunter+5
http://www.3djuegos.com/juegos/analisis/4555/0/silent-hunter-5/
These are just two examples.
My very personal point of view, is that all judgments made about this game started with "0 tolerance" for the project itself, because of that DRM.
I am a user of industrial software applications (elaborate mods for our own plants) and I can be sure that PERFECT SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS DOESN'T EXIST:damn:. They are always not enough tested and they never fulfill all wishes or all needs.
Best wishes to all of you, and ... enjoy the game!:woot:
I have to wait a few months.

Ah yes, but who was asking for perfect software? I think what most of us wanted was a good subsim, or the very least a finished game. Alas...
and Welcome aboard matey

I think the people (here at least) like to read the reviews to see how other opinions compare to theirs. I know I like to have my opinions on things I love - or hate - be backed up.:sunny:

If you haven't made up your mind by now, you clearly don't love subsim games.
Why? Do you know of one?
:rotfl2:

Sorry, couldn't resist the jab. I do love subsims. But seriously, what of those who have made up their mind the 'wrong' way? Do they not love subsims?

Not everything rises to the standard of a submarine simulation... Or would you expect a food-lover would love all kinds of "consumable foods"?

@Steve
No, it's completely possible to love Subsims and not run out like an addict and buy SH5 the way I did.

Please note that I simply meant that if you love subsims, you probably have already made up your mind whether or not you will get SH5. No wrong way...it's all good as long as it's your genuine opinion.

I'm with you too, I'm always interested in hearing other opinions and perspectives on things I enjoy. (Like SH5 reviews)

i bought sh5 a few days ago and find it to be an enjoyable time, despite a few flaws. add in a few mods, its even better. i have come to believe that the majority of the negativity come from those who dont own nor have even played the game and are just butt hurt over the drm so they will say anything. i'm glad i took the path less traveled. :salute:

It's true. Some people are swayed by eye candy alone. Meh. Not a biggie.
