How would you route this?

In my last patrol/career, I was assigned to go to CG79 from Wilhlemshaven. January 1940.

I know how I intended to go, but I am curious about how you would approach it and why.

I am playing GWX 3.0.

I'd sail around the tip of Scotland because the much shorter route through the English Channel is heavily patrolled and mined.

As you head soth from the tip of Scotland you are in a rich hunting ground/area (Rockall Banks/North Western Approaches).

Travelling south a hundred mile or so off the west coast of Eire will see you soon coming across another heavy traffic convoy route (South Western Approaches) and as you head toward your patrol destination travelling down the west coast of Portugal you've a good chance of coming across northbound convoys from the Med and South Africa.

Chances are you'll have little or no ordnance left when you reach your designated patrol grid.

I was thinking about this question earlier. I'd go about it the same as jimbuna said, but one of these times out I might try hooking into the Liverpool-Gibraltar route coming out of the southwestern AM's. Then I'd probably depart north into the CG's - before reaching the Strait of Gibraltar - to carry out the assigned patrol. If I had any munitions left over after that I'd see how the traffic is off the coast of Portugal on the way home.

Same here, I was supposed to go to that same grid. But encountered a substantial amount of tonnage in a convoy. After being expended I had the choice of going home, or resupply at Vigo. I did the latter eventhough getting a full torpedo load is not really realistic. (shrugs)

Now I'm still there intercepting a convoy north bound. I think it came out of the Med. I allready killed most tonnage in it and quite a few deckgun kills, but lost all that work due to a corrupt save. (God knows how many hours realtime that was :(. But it goes to show.... ALLWAYS submerge to check for nearby units!!!! I knew I shouldn't have ignored that hunch.

Oh wait, the question was how to get there? Yeah, north of Scottland. I am in March 1940. Rumors has it there's metal floating in the Channel.

Because like jimbuna said the channel is dotted by mines and British DD's, torp boats its a great hunting ground tho but its risky

Frankly if you don't use the channel you sir are a big girls blouse and deserve to be playing SH5 :O: Just kidding, I would like many others have said, go around the tip of scotland and hug the Irish coast, then follow down the Portugese coast. If you get it right/lucky you'll be heading home before you reach the southern tip of Portugal :D

My route was going to be -- before I hit a mine just a few hours out of port -- through the gap north of Scapa, down the Hebrides and Irish Sea, then beeline to Portugal.

How much mining is there in the Hebrides Strait? I have never hit one in 60 or 70 trips, but I may just be lucky.

As proud owner of many a girl's blouse I have done an informal survey of my closet and to a blouse they agreed that they would be perfectly willing to use the channel and indeed take great offense at any insinuation otherwise.

They also suggested that anyone concerned about mines around the Hebrides should consider having his mum walk him down to the local haberdashery, where he will no doubt find a suitable pair of big boy knickers available for purchase.

The mere mention of "Channel" got me to thinking about minefields. A couple of days ago I slipped past a mine approx. 30km south of Dover on a routine hydrophone check. Gave me quite a shiver - the sub had missed it by 10 meters or so.

I've always gone between them and the Hebrides, but I tend to stay in the deeper water midway between. Never had any trouble there. Of course I don't think I've ever come acress any enemy shipping there either. Might take the longer way 'round next time and see what happens.

A lot depends on what depths (upper and lower) the mines are tethered at.

I've been through minefields where they were set at 25 metres so transitting at PD wasn't a problem but I've also seen them only a few metres below the surface which means any choppy weather conditions and your knackered even on the surface.

Don't forget....the density of said minefield can also be a crucial factor that also needs taken into consideration.
