Sorry for the really dumb question but is there a 'follow along' camera option? Yes I scanned the manual but no joy there. As it is I have to chase along after my sub in order to watch her from the outside...

Thanks.

If you're playing in stock, it should be right there in the external view mode, otherwise you may be out of luck. (Like me in TMO)

In stock/Vanilla, the misc tab. (one with clipboard) press next unit. You'll see your sub locked and if you move your mouse, you'll gain topside view upto a limit and then the camera will return to exact position.. (be delicate will you?)
To zoom in, Press Arrow Up Key like you normally would in free cam

The view distance is limited in range to the model of each ship, generally the smaller it is the more close up you'll get to see.

In TMO, your zoom is not limited. You can go through the ship and exit the other, but there is no next/previous unit buttons on misc tab, and the only option is the follow manually..(Arrow Keys) hope this helps

The , key and the . key will step you through external views of any ships within range including your own. I'm assuming you have the external views enabled (i.e. you are NOT on 100% realism which prevents external views). This definitely works in stock/vanilla and also in TMO (IF the realism is at a low enough level, i.e. external views are 'on').

Press the . key and you should instantly get an external view of your sub from the side. The view stays with your sub (i.e. follows along). You can change the angle and altitude of the view by using the mouse. Press the . key again and it will jump to the next ship (assuming one is in range of your sub). Pressing the , key will step you back to your sub. Actually either key will simply cycle through until you get back to your sub. One is "forward" and one is "backward" for what it's worth.

I forget exactly but I think you need left-click and hold then move the mouse and you can change the angle/altitude of the view. Or maybe you don't need the left-click/hold part (it's been a while since I've been on 100% realism for the last few patrols, LOL). Up/down arrow keys zoom in and out (IIRC so does mouse wheel but not sure).

Hope this helps.

Just noticed in another post that, apparently, the , and . keys in TMO are disabled for the external camera 'hopping' I described. I wasn't aware of that. As I'm on full-realism and have been for some time I haven't been able to verify this.
It definitely works in stock. The other post has a fix for TMO to re-enable the , and . keys. See the post titled "follow along camera".

Apologies if this caused some confusion and/or frustration. :-?

Shame on you! Your punishment will be to sit on the Smoking Deck on your next crash dive!
