View Full Version : How literal is ship-area destruction ?

Let me put it this way: How exact and detailed has Ubisoft made the Damage Factor in SH5 ? If I aim at the stern, well below the waterline, and hit it, shouldn't the rudder/prop usually be blown away or seriously damaged, and the ship come to a standstill? If I aim for the bow below the waterline and the whole bow explodes shouldn't the ensuing hole slow the ship down as the sea floods in? Or am I expecting too much ? is RL more fickle than I assume it to be?

I have tried quite a few combinations so far and have yet to see a consistency in damage effects.
I have plugged a merchant ship 4 times and seen it limp away at 5 knots. I have plugged a merchant ship once and it blew up instantly.
I have sent 2 torps into a ship stern and still it sped away.
I have sent one torp into the bow and it sped even faster away.
I have sent a torp into the bow and someone must have laid a gunpowder trail to a nearby ammo dump for the whole fore section exploded in a 4th July fireworks display.
If variety is indeed the spice of life then I am experiencing it. Is anyone else having similar experiences?

Different loads when the ships are placed with the mission editor effect this.

You can have a ship carrying ammo or freight, or nothing if you like.

So the randomness your seeing is probably based on the internal load.

You should try hitting a Flat Top, one torp and KABOOOOOOOOOOOM, yet I have hit a large tanker with 3 and she chugs away merrily as can be.:damn:

There is a MOD or 2 for the ship damage, someone will post on here or look in the downloads section. :)

The damage model for most Units seems to be very weak.
But I'm a hard core GWX Guy.

I'm sure that this will be addressed by Modders as time goes by.

I never look at the Game as released.
But what it can be Modded to be.

Not even 2 months into release?
Much is sure to come.

That definitely makes me feel better. I do hope Ubisoft has literally allowed for such different situations as you describe. It makes for a much more interesting experience. thank you.

That also makes me feel good. I agree, it's early days and mods will hopefully make this game tops - eventually, altho' I suspect that even mods will not help it come to the technical exactness that SH3 with the GW expn. has come to. I still play SH3 with the Grey Wolves expn. and have to say that at present it's more realistic and nail-biting than SH5 with it's arcady feel. I feel that Ubisoft leaned more toward the candy to entice the younger, console generation and take the pressure from off of their brain cells by over-simplifying the technical aspect of SH5. Just my 5c.

So we Mod the cheesy stuff out.
SH3 was pretty lame in stock form.
SH5 is not much different in it's current form.

Going for a finesse shot intended to bust the keel on a Cimarron has resulted in one two-torpedo kill. Others, against the same type, have seen five hits result in the flaming vessel pulling away at 5, then 6, then 7...knots.
SMALL tankers generally take one, BUT keel depth appears to vary a LOT, so's I shut off der magnetic explosioner UND take a shot. If that works, great! If not, it ain't worth risking my neck by exposing poor, disgruntled Dieter to enemy fire - as much as I'm tempted! - should I surface and tickle her mit der 88 Schiffskanone.

Speaking of Dieter and the morale issue: if I were playing 3 or 4, I'd be, "trading him in" while in port after the first mission!

You know, there's too much of this nonsense in SH5! How can one tell from even CLOSE observation whether it's a full or an empty? Riding lower in the water? No... How about - if that freighter DOESN'T have the lawnmowers riding exposed on the Lido deck, it doesn't count as a, "War Supplies" kill. Where's, "gameplay enhancement" come into planning of that nature?

...sorry about the delay there. In my rage, I completely forgot where the, " ? " key was and turned the rudder one degree by mistake while, "Steamwake" was yelling at me to, "Be More Aggressive!"

How does one tell if the ship is carrying war supplies or not?:-?

by boarding and inspecting, like they did in world war 1 :D

I'm not an expert but from casual observation it seems as if a ship will not sink untill that goofy grey bar reaches zero. It appears to be hit point based.

the damage models for ships in sh3 sh4 sh5 series are poorly done, many ships have parts that dont register damage at all such as rudders and props so its not uncommon to hit a prop with 4 or 5 torps yet the ship itself is completely undamaged (usually a rudder is small enough to miss)

you have to actually hit the hull to be sure you record damage to the ship

My understanding from our Forums is that a freighter is only carrying, "War Supplies," and is counted as a, "War Supplies" kill, if military equipment is seen parked exposed on the upper deck. An identical ship without said merchandise on visible display is NOT, "War Supplies!"

YEAH! Besides, I need to get some new movies and everyone's got a yen for a bit of ham with their beans, so we could raid the galley...
