Or not...

The Obama administration’s top science and technology official, who has argued for the economic de-development of America, warned science students last Friday that the United States cannot expect to be “number one” forever.

Maybe he is right but why even bring it up?

Oh and good luck on getting through to CNS they have been swamped for the last couple of days. It's unknown if its intentional or not.

What, negative opinions should be supressed?

An admiinistration offical telling students "You should not expect to excell" is not quite a 'negative opinion'. Its not like he is a talking head on the evening news.

Students need encouragement not a cold shower.

So I will ask the question again. Why even bring this up?

Since I havent read the article yet, cant really say much, but why not bring it up? The states seem to be on a downward path is some areas, students should be told about this to better prepare them, hell, some might even be motivated to try to change that. Just telling em, we are number one, or other such bull**** just builds up unrealistic expectations, or leads to the status on number 1 being taken for granted.

But as mentioned before, this might be completely off tyhe ball since I have not been able to read the article due to the issues mentioned in the OP

Edit: Now that the site finally opened and I Have read the article, he never, in no way, told the students they should not expect to excell.
