I honestly hate the way SH5 has been done. Its just that simple.

My game is up to date with patches and quite honestly I find more things I do not like about the game then like. I have been playing completely unmodded mind you and while I did enjoy SH4 vanilla, mods make the game. Sadly I think I will need mods to have any chance of enjoying this one.

ID book? where has you gone?

torps: with and without TDC they seem to really solely upon the direction of my periscope at the time of firing regardless of locked target or not.

watch stations? Yeah the FPS aspect is nice and cool and all, but gets really irritating after the first half hour.

return to plotted course? hello? Am I missing a button somewhere. I can alter course to view heading, but not order a return to course.

depth: A fathometer would be nice when sneaking like a bastage into Scapa Flow. Literally ran all over the ship looking for one and talked to everyone.

AA: While I can order men to man the gun. Fire at will?

torp spread: salvo is nice as a feature, but not being able to adust the spread between shots can really waste your torps.

sinking.... I'm simply not seeing ships sink from taking water on. Hell, do they even take on water over time? Fires are pretty, but dont seem to do damage over time.

They seriously should have added a row along the top of all your crew and the ability to click any special abilities or orders they would give.

periscopes: when issuing the order to go to periscope depth, why does the observation scope raise? Generally I am sitting at the attack scope with it raised when I give the order. Also, they need a toggle to lower them with one click instead of holding down the del/pgdn buttons.

I have not had to deal with damage control yet, but I do know where to find the info about what IS damaged. Just no idea how issuing repair orders works yet.

The game fights against you more than makes it enjoyable in its current form I think. The DRM insanity is only insult to injury at that point.

I know I know, but in all fairness. Should I have to?

Of course you should. That's like asking "I bought this Barbie, but didn't any any of the playsets, it should still be just as fun right?"

Every simulation game like this ships in a poor state missing many features. What it DOES ship with however is the ability to add those features in to improve the game. This is not the same as shipping an "incomplete" game or "shipping half a game and expecting the modders to fix it" as many will complain. Simulators like this as designed to extended by modding. That's why we have so many amazing tools available to do it. Not modding is truly "doing it wrong". :)

You've been suffering with this game since you got it, mostly since the game, as shipped, is in pretty sad shape. :O: I suffered for about 3 days before I found enough mods to change the game to how I wanted to play it and haven't looked back.

If you look at every item that you complained about, every single one of them has been and will continue to be upgraded, tweaked and fixed by modding the game. Even with full patches fixing every bug won't change the basic game. Modding will.

So yes, of course you should mod. Not modding Silent Hunter III is limiting yourself drastically with how much fun the game can be.

I don't mean to hijack or anything, but since you brought up the subject of mods :D Would you be willing to provide a list of all the mods you are using. I'm trying to compile a good combination for different play styles. Also what level of realism do you like to play on?

Existing mods for this game will sort out 99% of your (valid) gripes. The game will be sorted over time but i'm still having fun......well all except for the damned AI.

Hate is a strong word....i'm sure you meant to say frustrating, irritating and annoying!!!:up:

I didn't say I don't/wouldn't mod.... I mean, i play IL2 and have 9gb of mods running with that and I think I had at least 2 in SH4. It's the spending the better part of a day browsing, downloading, testing, and repeating that was getting in the way of a much needed fix :)

Kinda off the topic, but do mods or modding of things such as fog, daylight, night, weather affect the AI's ability to see as well as your own? One of the frustrating things I have with Project Reality for example is things that make the game nice for players had no effect on the AI's ability to detect you.
