Pearl Harbour: Mystery of the Killer Subs

For decades it has been thought that a bomb dropped by a Japanese aircraft sank the USS Arizona during World War II. However, the recent discovery of a group of small Japanese submarines in and around Pearl Harbour has raised questions about the battleship's final hours.
This film follows a team of expert investigators, who journey to the seafloor to explore the wreckage of a newly discovered sub, and questions whether this mini-sub, and its two-person crew, made it into Pearl Harbour to fire torpedoes at the Arizona.
With unprecedented access to the remains of the Arizona and other unique evidence, including aerial photos taken by Japanese aircraft and testimonials from US and Japanese veterans, Pearl Harbour: Mystery of the Killer Subs investigates the possibility that these tiny but lethal mini-subs may have played a crucial and previously unsuspected part in the tragic events of that 'Day of Infamy'.

I'll remain quiet on this, although I'm familiar. However, there was an incredible feat performed by a DE with a very green Captain involved!

The 'bombs' they were dropping were 14" AP shells with fins attached. Much more likely to penetrate an armored magazine that a contact torpedo, no matter how big the charge.

I'm puzzled with the discovery.

They did confirm that was SH5 torpedo that sank the BB didn't they?

The premise is pretty funny! The Arizona took a torpedo and BOOM!

I guess that their research team never looked at the Oklahoma and West Virginia. The Oklahoma took 5-9 torpedoes and the West Virginia 7, and there was no BOOM! Ah well, more gist for the rumor mill.

Believe what you like, but I greatly doubt their conclusions will be nothing but speculation.

thyro,

I think it was one of the old "nuclear" torpedo as seen in a few SHIII mods.

Although I should mention that the torpedoes used by the midgets were more powerful than those carried by the "Kates" at Pearl Harbor.

General consensus is that the Arizona took a AP bomb just aft and port of the first turret, which went crashing through a few decks, gaining access to the forward magazine below. The torpedo theory has been discredited. The only other plausible conjecture is the old, "powder storage outside the magazine proper." However, what's been revealed over the years indicates the massive explosion and resulting sinking were NOT typical of results one would expect from detonation of residual materials.

She's closed right now, by the way. There's a new Visitors' Center going up. Supposed to reopen April 14 I believe.
