Periscope replacement on May 1 at 8 am at Seawolf Park. (http://www.cavalla.org/park.html)
The job will take a couple of days, if we don't get enough volunteers it will have to be done on two weekends and two crane rentals.
All are welcome to come and volunteer. There will be some dirty work inside the sail, cleaning, inspecting, preparing and lubricating the bearings. When you visit the Cavalla in the future, you can tell your friends and family: See those periscopes? I helped them do that. :salute:

I wish I had a little more advance notice but you can count on my help with that rusty old tub, assuming I can actually afford the trip. I should know for certain within about a week. :salute:

There have got to be enough members in Texas alone for us to do this. Get your boots on the line, people!:DL

What's bribing Poland have to do with anything? :O:
I MAY be able to, Neal. I just moved and it depends on how everything shakes out with that.
If I can find somewhere to ditch the kids, I may be able to make it out on Saturday. I'd love to be able to help out that old boat.

Would really like to be there - I've done enough of these on 594, 637 and 688 class boats in my time wearing the uniform. At least this won,t involve lugging the test gear to the top of the sail to do antenna sweep testing.
Depends on my schedule for work as I travel a bunch doing field support for what used to be Scientific Atlanta (now part of Cisco).

Too many prior commitments for me. I swear, everything is happening on that weekend.:o
I'll be there on Saturday, but I've got some stuff to do on Sunday. Any idea how long should we expect to be there?

This is all the volunteers we have? What are you people doing that's so important? Soccer games and recitals and the wife and kids and stuff are important but....this is a submarine! A real one! It has a dive klaxon! :woot:
C'mon! Dive klaxon!
In all seriousness, we had a lot of fun last time we worked on the Cavalla. Even if you're new, please consider joining us and helping out. I've been to two subsim events in Houston and I was only molested by internet weirdoes once or twice (Jim!:stare:) Really though, it was a lot of fun, and I'd encourage anyone who still has time to make travel plans to consider attending. The work is never very hard and the company is first-rate, with the exception of my own, but I'm not all that bad, really.
Still not convinced? Ok, fine, we'll up the ante. My Dad and I are planning on staying an extra day to go see Battleship Texas and the San Jacinto Monumuent. Anybody who volunteers after this post gets free admission. I will personally pay for you to see these awesome things. The Texas is a sight not to be missed and the monument is a giant pillar with a star on top. It's like the Washington monument, but with a star! I don't think you can go to the top of it, but......STAR!
I am serious about paying the admission to Battleship Texas for anyone else who volunteers and can stay the extra day. Cavalla is in pretty poor condition and we have a chance to help set her right again. She's a relic of WW2 that will never be replaced, and she is well worth the time and the effort. If there is anyone else within a reasonable distance, please consider volunteering.
That's honorable of you James.
However, explaining to the dean of my university why I missed all 3 finals to go play on a submarine is not something on my wish list.
However, come September and the meet this fall, I'll be all over it :yeah:

*grumble grumble* stoopid volunteering early *grumble grumble* :nope::wah::damn:
Seriously, that is a really great offer. Living in the area, I've been to the battleship a few times. It's an amazing thing to see. The monument and battlefield of San Jacinto are also great (probably a greater experience if you're actually a Texan). I was there last summer, and there is an observation deck at the top.

Are you guys doing the hard hat tour?
Sadly, no. It looks like we may not have a large enough group to get one. Also, I doubt I can afford that. I've only got about $150 to spare, but I will subsidize a hard-hat tour if we can arrange it.

Nice try, redcoat. First you want me to pay for the flight, and next you'll be TAXING MY TEA! I think I'll go dump a few boxes of Lipton into Lake Worth just to tell you off. :D

Thanks for the offer, Mark. I don't really have a plan, other than to pay for a visit to the Texas for anyone who cares to stay after the Cavalla restoration. I don't even know if Neal still intends to go through with this thing, but I'm trying to drum up some support. If we can get a hard-hat tour then hooray. If not, we still get to see the Texas, in all her glory.

I'd love to be able to do this and I'm just in North Houston but I have TSO tickets, which were an anniversary gift to my wife that night and strong desire to still be breathing and have all my body parts intact on the 2nd.
Put me down for the next one?

FYI, I was posting this for general news, I will be unable to attend.
I was planning on being there, up until the van broke down this morning. :wah:Depending on when it's fixed, I might make it.
If this is still going on next weekend, I'll try and make it.

There was no way I could have met up, as I live in Maryland. However, having said that, I work in a precision machine shop. One of our subcontracts involved a very classified submarine, so I'm pretty sure that, as long as the replacement parts aren't multi-ton, but more on the order of hinges, brackets, etc., I could prolly make replacement parts if provided drawings and/or blueprints.
