Refresh my memory , please

I'm back hunting in the Pacific after an extended period of shore leave. Just would like some clarification on mission objectives and their associated icons.
For the mission where the icon is a pair of binoculars in a star, I need to stay within range of the icon (I use 100nm) for a period of time. Doesn't matter whether I sink any ships during this time as tonnage doesn't count towards mission completion.
The other one where the icon is a flag in a star, I need to get near (80 nm?) whereupon it'll be marked complete and a new onjective given - sink ships. Am I right that the ships need not be sunk anywhere near the now-completed icon? And that I need 10,000 t to accomplish the mission?

I think you have it right for the type of objective but the distances vary and should be in your orders. As in, within 40nm for 72hrs, or within 200nm of objective, etc. Pay attention when your orders are given before leaving as that one sometimes doesn't get repeated by radio xmission. I'm using RFB/RSRDC so my experience could be a bit different.

Once the star goes grey I've sunk ships anywhere and got the check mark, doesn't seem to matter.

My experience is that it is 5K tonnage and I have gone well out of my patrol area to get it without a problem (after you grey out the star.)

Now here’s an oddity – most of the time when I get the “icon flag” mission the subsequent mission reads something to the effect of “go sink some ships”. My latest assignment was somewhere in the Palawan Straits & I spent the 72 hrs in the orders fruitlessly patrolling the area without any contacts. I went back to my happy hunting ground between Borneo & the Celebes where I sunk a Maru for some 4k+ tons. But the objective was not flagged complete. And the objective reads something to the effect of “go sink some ships along the Palawan Straits”.
I can’t afford to sail back due to fuel concerns. Have I made a boo-boo, or is the magic number 5000 tons to complete the “sink ships” assignment?

I think you need a couple more ships. I think it's like 10,000 tons
A lot depends on what mods you are running.
Once the star grays out you can go any were and pick up some tonnage.
