Recon at Trondhein Naval Base

Okay.. so I fight my way up narrow waterways to the Trondhein Naval Base.. nice and submerged so the base doesn't see me I park my U-boat RIGHT ON the waypoint for the recon. I lock onto the first of two boats at the base... no icon that I can find to allow me to take a picture. I lock on to the second boat; still no icon that allows me to take a picture.

I sink both ships... still nothing.

Do I just sit here until daylight so I can wave to the people on the shore?

It came on March 12th.. I came back from failing to sink an aircraft carrier northwest of England and my next mission was to go recon this base.. a horrid thing just getting there through narrow waterways with destroyers peppered along the way. Took insane hard work to get to the place and now I'm stuck and unable to complete the mission.

I've done this and found out, quite by mistake, that if one TARGETS and LOCKS a ship through the periscope (didn't try the UZO as I, too, was submerged), an icon for "Take a Photo" pops up that can be clicked on.

I did lock on to both ships... with the observation scope and then did both with the attack scope.. never got an icon.

You think Darkwraith's UI and dials mod might have messed up my icon popping up? Just grasping at straws at this point.

Did you get this while in the sub pen (.ie after returning to home port).. or through a BDU radio message while at sea?

Hmph, maybe i need to head home more often. I've played through three of the campaigns already and not once got a single "special mission".

Going to bed.. reloaded and re-approached 3 times trying both periscopes and the UZO after getting a clear lock in clear weather at or even closer than the recon picture icon is located to the base/harbor. Did it submerged, surfaced, engines off even. Checked all officer interface/conversations, various sub-systems screens, captains log/mission record...... nothing anywhere.

The only mod I'm currently using is the Recognition Manual enhancement.

I would think that with all the mod use, someone would've reported a conflict. I did look back at some earlier games and my photo recon mission was to Narvik, NOT Trondhein! Not to insult you, but is it possible you're attempting photography in the wrong port? All those Norwegian places look alike with all those pesky fjords!

I think i read somewhere about it not working with darkwraith's UI mod. The thread is loooong now.. so i dont really feel like digging through though it. Bit im almost positive i remember seeing DW mention it and that he either fixed it for the next version.. or is trying to fix it.

Maybe drop a message in that thread and see if it's confirmed.

If it's true.. then save your game, unload the mod. Take the picture, save.. then reload the mod. sucks but it may be the only way right now.

Special missions seem to be a pain in the A*SE. I had a mission to drop a spy off near Londonderry, had to crawl past a destroyer, waited for him to go. Then 2 days of T/C before a message popped up for him to go ashore :damn:. God this game is infuriating sometimes:x

Had that experience too, Nico! After getting hull damage from grinding into the shore attempting to dislodge the, "spy," I came here and asked about it. The answer: patience - and hope that pesky destroyer doesn't decide to come further landward!

Darkwriath's UI mod stops the "take photo" button coming up. He is aware of the problem.
Save the game, disable the ui mod, reload the game. when the lock button appears, the take photo button will pop up as well. take the photo then save and re-activate the mod.

Nope. I was parked right on top of the icon that was right at the naval yard that matched exactly the name of what is also in my Captain's assignment and also what matches the assignment name on the navigators map.

talking about special missions, I just read about a real one in Blair's book, vol 2.

Seems POWs in a camp in New Brunswick, Canada had been sending coded messages to Germany through the mail about a planned escape.

A plan was hatched to have the escapees go to Prince Edward Island where they would rendez-vous with a U-Boat in may 43.

No one in Germany had bothered to check the weather patterns. When the U-Boat approached the Gulf of St-Lawrence, it was still frozen solid. To get to the rendez-vous spot, they had to travel under the ice and then rise up very quickly to break though, damaging both periscopes and the supersructure.

Unfortunately, the escape never came off. The Boat remained there for 3-4 days until they figured out no escapees were coming and left. :arrgh!:

Yep, it worked. Of course.. I've only ever played with Darkwraith's UI/All Dials so I felt completely naked and lonely with my periscope. :haha:

The Lock/Breaklock icon in the center of the periscope is where the (Take Picture) icon shows up. I sunk the two ships in port, one was a troop carrier.. and now I'm slipping away. When I get a good distance off I want to reload and put Darkwraith back on. I just don't want to lose the tonnage so I might go all the way back home first. :)

yes i ran into the same problem while on the photo recon mission
first i have to say this is one best mods and i didn't want to lose
it for recon missions..........................this is what i did to fix it

open commands.cfg located in C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\data\Cfg

look for :
[Cmd350]
Name=WP_Take_photo
Contexts=1
Key0=0x4A,s,"SHIFT J" <----add this line

now just lock onto a ship and press shift j......photo taken

p.s. make sure you have the mouse pointer active,or you will
have to use Esc to remove the photo image from the screen

I made it home!

Of course.. ran into a freighter on the way back and from periscope depth sank it. Surfaced and the CO2 never went away (sigh)... so I did Ludicrous-Uber Speed all the way back home and got back just before suffocating. heh

I'm going to try that code fix, thanks!

I also had this mission. I got into the port and locked onto one of the ships and the take photo button showed up next to the lock unlock button.
