View Full Version : Scapa Flow GRRRRRRR!

So I just downloaded SH3 (after much time enjoying SH2, AoD, etc). I'm at 79% realism (not ready to id and manual TDC yet). I was assigned to the map sector that contains Scapa Flow. There are no instructions other than what sector to patrol, so I figure this is my opportunity to pull Gunter Prien's legendary feat. I end up making it all the way in (2 DDs sunk, many others eager to meet me) with only a couple of torpedos left. What do I find?? NOTHING. Not a single capital ship to be found. What's the deal?!?!?! I tried to shell the Scapa Flow lighthouse, and hit it perfectly, but the light continued to shine.

Also, when I sank one DD, it ended up sitting vertical in the water, with its nose on the bottom (very shallow water), then it just disappeared. I was going to use it for cover, but it vanished as soon as the nose hit the mud. Is there any way to keep sinking ships around a bit longer if part of them is still on th surface?

Also, my auto TDC seems to do a terrible job. I read about opening the doors, which I'll try, but I found two HUGE convoys and missed all but one shot. Is there a secret to torpedo setttings in very rough weather? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
CD

In very rough weather, you may want to input the speed yourself based on the average speed of the ships. this is because the ships speeds will change by a good 2 knots in either direction as they push through the waves. your officer will instantly and perfectly input that change in speed, and if you fire while the speed is even a knot or so off, thats a good 300m you can miss at your average engagement range.

I have not snuck into scapa flow yet, but i tried it and was chased off by a task force that happened to be RTBing while i was entering, lol. I did pause it and use the camera to look around inside it though, and for some reason the land wasnt rendering, there were flaming ships everywhere, and everything looked just darn weird. I know that land wont render beyond a certain from your uboot(distance 25k i think?) but i was only a few kilometers outside it.

I havent had any problems with ships disappearing, but i have had them not sink all the way in shallow water. If i remember correctly from the GWX, you unfortunately dont get credit unless the whole ship sinks.

I've done that in SH2 but haven't tried in SH3. Here's a wiki on it that shows where he entered through the block ships.

Q opens the selected torpedo doors.
W closes them.

You can also go to the Weapons Officer's station (near the overhead) to open them all yourself. BUT, remember to close any unused doors before going deeper than 20 Meters.

Welcome aboard ChrisD http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/welcome.gif

It is pointless trying to hide behind half sunk ships in SH3 because the ships sensors can still 'see' you.

Ships cease to be rendered/viewable when they are destroyed (but not usually until they sink completely) :hmmm:

You might want to consider giving GWX3.0 a gp.....the files are available from my FF account (link above my sig) and there are comprehensive installation instructaions available at the GWX website 9click on my sig).

GWX also comes with a very comprehensive manual.
