View Full Version : GWX Missions? Patrol area????? why?
HI.
I have read somewhere that you dont get reown for patrolling your area such as AM26 etc...... While playing with the GWX3 Mod?
Ok that being said...
1. What good is even going to the area? if not pts are given?
2. What is the point of the game. at that point your supposed to have a CO to report to not just go out where ever you feel like it. I feel there is no point to the game and it looses some realizim. I mean there wasnt Sub CO's just running around were there? After they reached the patrol are they were either given a msg to goto another area or the Captian was a rough CO and then took his sub some where else on a hunch.
Shouldn't there be some kind of goal for each mission?

You are correct, with GWX3 the renown awards for reaching your assigned grid and patrolling it for 24 hours have been removed from the game. I don't know the reason for this but obviously it was the decision of the GWX team to do it that way.
You can easily put them back in, however, either by editing the basic.cfg file or by using the Renown Replacement mod here:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1182
I prefer just editing the relevant lines in the cfg file myself rather than letting the mod replace it entirely.
You can also use another mod that will give you a change of orders mid-patrol in the form of radio messages from BdU telling you to patrol additional grids if you have the fuel and torpedos to do so.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1502
IIRC though this mod is for SH3 Commander and should be enabled (preferably with JSGME) after placing it in a MODS folder inside the Commander folder, rather than the game folder itself.
Kryton
there are some good shipping lanes in AM between north ireland and south hebrides.
also there is a mod that puts back the renown taken out in GWX. i think it is Wreford Browns Renown Replacement mod.
take it eeeasy:salute:

BF11-BF14 should have traffic lights it can get that busy :yeah:
As to the question of whether you should bother patrolling the assigned area, that's really up to you.
How do you want to play the game?
Some people here will freelance.
The assigned area is just a suggestion, right? I'm gonna go to where I know the action is.
Nothing wrong with this.
Others view BDU orders as sacrosanct.
That's my patrol area - I'm gonna stay in it for my whole patrol.
If that means I see nothing for 3 or 4 weeks then so be it.
Many U Boats during the war had the same experience.
Nothing wrong with this approach either.
I've tried this myself, but I'm just not disciplined enough to stick with it for a whole patrol.
So, I play a sort of compromise.
I patrol my assigned grid ref for, oh I dunno, say 3 or 4 days.
Single radio contacts outside this area are off limits, unless they happen to be heading for my grid.
Any Convoy radio report in an adjacent square is fair game for an intercept.
If after 3 or 4 days I have seen nothing, I assume BDU would reposition me.
Pick an adjacent square, then start the process again, another 3 or 4 days.
After that, I can pick another adjacent square etc etc etc ...
That way if I am assigned a grid ref way off the beaten track, I can slowly, over the course of a patrol, work my way towards known shipping lanes.
It's gonna cost me time and fuel, but I feel like I am heading in the right direction, without just being a freelance operator.
I also have the Mid Patrol orders mod installed, so I can I ask for a reassignment if I want. With the caveat that if I ask to be reassigned, I HAVE to go to the new grid. Even if it is at the arse end of nowhere..
As you have found out Kryton, there is nothing in the game that forces a mode of patrol on you.
You gotta use a bit of imagination and self discipline, and roleplay it to a certain extent.
It really is up to you how you want to play it mate.
These are just a couple of suggestions :DL

I agree with all you said there sergei
While you do have some good points sergei
I still think I should get some reown for patroling the assigned area
though yes I do act on some of the radio msg's and go out of the patrol area
I still did my duty and should get rewarded even if it is just a little bit. :hmmm:
but go Rough after you've patrolled is always a good idea especially if you have a full bank of torps

As I recall from reading the GWX manual, the reason why they removed the renown for hitting your patrol grid is because some of the new theater mods have no way to give renown for hitting those patrol grids (Black Sea? Can't remember).
So rather than have some theaters WITH renown for hitting your grid, and others without it, they just made them all without it.
I agree, I think this was a bad plan. I think you should get points for fulfilling your mission.

IIRC the stock game gave you 400 renown for reaching the assigned grid, and 200 for completing the patrol as ordered.
The Renown Replacement mod will replace the GWX cfg file with one that includes those values, which were changed to 0 by GWX.
FYI if you edit the file manually to put the 400 and 200 back in the relevant lines, don't bother changing the value for the line below them that looks like it might award renown for returning to base, the game will not award renown for that even if you put something other than 0 there. It's a stock bug that no one has found a fix for yet.

That's fair enough Kryton.
As Frau Kaleun has pointed out, it is fairly easy to put it back in, just a quick edit of a cfg file.
Although the stock values of 400 and 200 do seem a tad high to me.
I'm thinking of putting the renown reward back into my own game when (if :o) I get to '43 and beyond.
By this stage in the war just getting to a patrol area in one piece is an achievement. :DL
Again Kryton - however you want to play it
Hi,
Yea I agree 400 is a bit to much... What would you set it to?
I'm thinking about 200 and 100 as I dont want to get to powerful too quickly.
Yea I've been there in 43 and I'm lucky just to get out of the pen.
Reown
Should be a reward for doing your job and allows for upgrades which should be slowly completed
over the years with promotions and the such

Maybe renown should be scrapped altogether?.As someone pointed out in here earlier somewhere, the real commanders didnt get UBoats based on a score system, they were generally provided ANYWAY by their command, same with having devices like the schnorkel fitted,it was simply a life or death decision, not one based on a score.See what I mean here?.So,if you wanted/needed the XXI and you were in late 1944 for example just edit the game's renown until you have enough for it,you would have probably been given one anyway by that stage in the war,if one was available that is,which would probably not be the case ;)
Above all, just enjoy the game anyway you see fit.
...i think a little ice cream for being a good Kaleu - and coming home, is worthy...
Yea I agree 400 is a bit to much... What would you set it to?
I was thinking about setting it to 50 for reaching the area, and 100 for remaining on station.
But these are just some figures I pulled out of a hat.
Your figures as just as valid.
Whatever you reckon, I guess.
As long as it's lower than stock, we both agree that figure seems too high :DL
I think your a lot closer than I am.... 50/100 should do well...
BTW not to get off topic but your merchant skin pack in your sig do these work with SH3??

I don't mind the renown system, as it is supposed to reflect your credibility with BdU and base commanders. No, no one had to 'buy' equipment, but when it was brand new and there was only one, it could go to the first boat in, or it could go to somebody's 'favorite son'.
I agree with GWX about not getting renown for just doing your job. Myself, I go to the patrol area for a week, and roll a die if I've had no luck. 1 - I pick a nearby grid and go there. 2-6 - I stay for another week, and roll again, this time 1-2 taking me elswhere. If I roll really badly and stay there for six weeks, too bad. Usually I find something no matter where I am.
No they're SH4 I'm afraid, made back when I was sailing in the PTO.
I'm back in the ATO now, and loving it :DL
I did toy with the idea of doing a skinpack for SH3, but to be honest with you, after opening up a few files and looking at them, I realsed it would be difficult to do a better job than whoever did the GWX ship skins.
it could go to the first boat in, or it could go to somebody's 'favorite son'.
Yep, that's true. And the renown system works quite well to simulate this.
Plus, I really like a game mechanic (whatever the game) where you save up to get better equipment.
Yep the reown system makes you work for your upgrades. and if your really good you could be the "Admirals son" and get all the goodies :D

I have edited my basic.cfg to give 50 for reaching and 50 for completing... not enough to really matter, but I figure "doing the job" should help a little on my fitness report.
(What I would like, though, is a negative -50 and -50 for NOT completing the assignment.)
And I more than complete: I always put in a full week on station.
That said, I usually choose a "fruitful" route to and from station And if I am low on eels at the end of my station week, I hold a conference (i.e. roll dice) with the other officers. Sometimes we go to a supply ship to restock, sometimes we beat it home.

Play the game the way it suits you best....we removed the standard renown because that is how we felt it should be.
GWX was actually developed to fit the needs of The Grey Wolves and it was always how we felt it should be played.
People have a choice....they can play it to our preference or tweak it to suit their own needs.

I really like your die rolling system Steve,it adds a random 'fate' element to your game, similar to those old fighting fantasy books (if you remember any of those?),where you rolled a die to decide the outcome then turned to the relevant page.
I think I may opt for this system myself any time I feel I cant decide on something...better to let the gods decide :03:
psst...fighting fantasy books were BRILLIANT in their day!,and I still play them whenever I feel in a nostalgic mood ;)
Oh yeah, I'd forgotten all about them.
We were all mad for those books when I was at school. :DL
