Who?
What?
Where?
<hands over ears> I'm not listening! I can't hear you! LaLaLaLaLa!
No, really, it's great to be old. I was born just five years after WW2 ended. I had the National Geographic that came with a little recording of John Glenn's three orbits. I remember going outside with my dad to watch TelStar fly overhead. I remember when President Kennedy was shot. I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Heck, I saw the Beatles LIVE! I was in boot camp when Neil Armstrong made his "One small step" speech. I missed Woodstock while I was in the navy (of course I didn't hear about it until later anyway). I visited lovely Viet Nam courtesy of Uncle Sam. The year I turned 21 was the year they lowered the voting age to 18. The first president I voted against was Nixon in '72.
In fact, the only bad part about being sixty is that my body is also sixty. It hurts to get up in the morning. It hurts to run. It hurts to walk. Sitting isn't so bad except for the part where I have to stand up again. In fact I hate this. Thanks so much for reminding me, you *$&#-^#*(#(# ^@*@-&*#&@ *&^$%#*@!!! Happy *&#&@^# Birthay indeed!
Whew! That was fun! Thanks guys. Let's do it again next year.

The time to start hating yourself or worrying for that matter is when you can't remember the memories :DL
I'm not sure if that has come across quite right :hmmm:
I can't remember :stare:

As my dear old dad used to say about getting older - "It's better than the alternative."
When my older daughter turned 21, I told my dear old dad that for the first time I was feeling old.
His reply: "Can I let you in on a little secret? People in their seventies really don't appreciate listening to children in their fifties whine about feeling old!"
I remember that every time I hear some girl (and it's always a girl) whine about turning 25: "I'm a quarter of a century old!":wah:
"Yeah? Think how your mom feels about that!"

A new copy of The World's Merchant Fleets, 1939: The Particulars And Wartime Fates of 6,000 Ships, by Roger Jordan. I already have one, but I got it real cheap and the bottom of the spine was trashed. It was still fully useable, but when I found a brand-new copy for $15 I just had to have it.
The other is Merchant Ships of the World in Color, 1910-1929, by Lawrence Dunn. $17 and free shipping. So I got them both for under forty bucks.
Sweet :yeah: Good prices too, that makes it all the better :salute:
I like the idea of the second book, colour photographs from the 1910s-1920s are always a treat to browse over. I recall seeing colour footage of the Thames in the 1930s and it's absolutely fascinating.

Happy Birthday Steve.
Your pieces are probably one of the most level-headed and decent ones I've ever read on "the internets" and I enjoy reading them. You are a fair, reasonable and intellectually honest debater, while many people only try to achieve that impression by qualifying their remarks with "I know this and that, BUT", when in reality they know nothing.
All the best, Sir, and bless you.

Me, I started out with a nice hot shower and breakfast at Carl's Jr. Before you laugh, I'll tell you that their Loaded Breakfast Burrito is the best breakfast in town for under ten bucks, and the combo is actually half that. I always eat there - it starts my day off right.
I just came from having that steak dinner, and I am stuffed, tired and happy. It was perfect, or at least as perfect as Sizzler can get, which ain't bad.

I joke about it, but I'm doing okay. I always like to remember a quote from JAG:
Ernest Borgnine: "Commander, do you have any idea what it's like to be seventy-two?"
David James Elliot: "No, Chief, I don't."
EB: "Sure you do. Yeah, you're slower and some things don't work as well as they used to, but up here [taps his head] where it counts, you're still the same crazy kid you were at eighteen!"
Happy Birthday, Steve! :salute:
And many more to come!

Pfft...when I hear some Pretty Young Thing talk about 30 being "old" I just want to say something I can't repeat, here.
I'm glad I held off on my own whining about age on this forum on the inevitable approach of my own birthday :dead: Not that I don't believe I still have reasons to bitch, but whining about turning 26 would just look silly after this thread

All the best and many more. It's a good age to age in, too. You can get replacement parts, killer painkillers, and new "putters". I'm only a few behind you, just young enough to dodge Vietnam but miss The Beatles live, so I share some of those good and bad times.
Bon Anniversaire!

I can remember being a little kid and thinking of my 15-year-old babysitter as one of the grownups. Of course my teachers were "real old!"
Our local library has tours of school kids come through. I see some of the teachers and think "She looks about the same age as my daughters."
Everything is relative. My 'baby' sister (twelve years younger than me, so I babysat her when she was little) is approaching fifty.
I just think about my 82-year-old dad, and I'm a kid again.

I'll have youknow John Wayne was my childhood hero and without him you Americans would have had a much harder time winning the war.....just about any war, after all he probably fought in all of them. :DL
I wonder where he got his anti ageing pills from? :hmmm:
