I know this has been beaten to death, but of all the posts regarding it, I can't find this one addressed. My system recently died (a bricked Seagate HD). Turns out my backup was corrupt also, thanks Norton. I'm reinstalling everything. It's an HP with an AMD quad 2200 and an EVGA gt240 gpu. I have the SH3 dvd without the Starforce protection. If I try to run SH3, with or without the patch, I get the error message about not having the right OS. It doesn't even get as far as asking me for my key code. I tried it with the NoCD patch and it starts, but crashes to desktop as soon as the loading screen completes. I'm running it in Win XP compatability mode with the UAC off. Ubisoft, of course, just says, "If it doesn't say Vista on the box, it may not work" I had it working before, I just don't remember how.

If anyone has an idea what I may have missed, let me know. Or if you know of a previously published question, that would be good too. I've read about 30 of them, and haven't found one yet, getting cross-eyed. I'm this close to throwing the whole computer out the window. This has been a miserable 3 weeks.

Thanks in advance,
Matt:damn:

If you desk top is set to higher than 1024x756, the standard resolution for the game, set it to that. That useualy dose the trick. If the game starts working after that you can set it up to run in windowed mode so you can put your desktop back to the way it was and things will work fine. Beond that make sure that you didn't instal the game in the Programsx86 directory, the standard instal directory, and run it in windows XP service pack 2 or 3 compatability mode and it should work just fine.

If all that dosen't work I don't konw what is wrong. Maby it is just fate. It just wasn't ment to be, man.

What service pack are you running with Windows Vista?

I only installed Silent Hunter 3 on my gaming PC the other night and I am running Windows Vista 64 with SP1. I also don't do any Microsoft Updates as this is my dedicated gaming machine. So no need for updates.

It installed perfectly and has been running perfectly since.

This is the directory I installed it to.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Games\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\

Plus I have always had UAC turned off as this kiddie prompting stuff really annoys me.

Here's what I did for my installation.

I installed the game from the original DVD and to the location I posted above. Once the game was installed I updated it with the 1.4b patch.

Once the patch was applied. I then created a shortcut on my desktop from the SH3.exe file. I then loaded up JSGME and applied the NO DVD patch. After making the MOD folder of course and copying the NO DVD patch folder into the MOD folder.

Once this was done. I double clicked on the desktop icon and the game loaded and played perfectly for me. Then I exited the game and installed all my mods.

BTW are you using the drivers that came with your computer? Or did you install updated ones from the manufacturers website?

Have you looked in the event log to see what caused the crash?

Hey guys, thanks for the reply. Let me run the list. Tried it in 1024x768, no joy. Also tried 16 bit versus 32 bit. Already had it running in XP SP2 compatability mode, didn't help. I'm currently running Vista Service pack 2 with all the drivers current. It's loaded in it's own folder, not the default.

I have a nagging suspicion it's the graphics card. It's the only other change since I installed it. I had all sorts of issues with the Nvidia drivers. Apparently the last set was recalled due to some heating issues. If it helps, here's the error info going to Microsoft.

If nothing else, guess I'll have to learn to like the Pacific theater. I'll miss using SH3 and all the cool sound mods, though.

If you wanted to. You could always try installing Windows Vista with SP1 and see what happens.

It may also be an Nvidia thing to and this would not surprise me in the least. I switched from Nvidia years ago and I haven't looked back nor have I had one single issue with ATi. Theres always something going on with their crappy drivers and they are always causing an issue in one form or another I have found. The quality of their drivers has become sub standard and has been for years in my opinion.

I don't suppose you have another card you can try?

What video card was you using before?

But from what I have read on the forum in another thread there has been a few people with issues getting SH3 to run under Windows Vista. As I read this thread in anticipating having the same or similar issues. Yet I never had a single issue and it worked flawlessly for me.

I was running the stock onboard graphics card before. I might give that a try just for snicks. I only changed it to up the graphics RAM for another game (Saboteur), and that one smokes now. Don't know if I want to go back to SP1. It's taken me 3 weeks to get back to where I am now. That would be too depressing. Maybe I'll give it a week and try it. Got too much stuff goin on right now. Thanks for the input.
