Hey guys, hope you're all well...

I haven't been on the scene much recently due to new work commitments, but I came back here three days ago shocked to find SHV has been released and i've completely missed out on everything.

So I have a couple of questions if that's alright with you guys... (I apologise profusely if they have been answered time and time again!!)

1) So how is it overall? Are we looked at an atlantic SH4 or is it a real sequel to SH3?

2) How does it differ from SH3? is it just prettier or are there some real great technical things they've thrown in there?

3) Are there any 'quirky' bits to it, like organising crew before patrols?

4) (I am bound to be flamed for this, I am really sorry) Are there wolfpacks or AI interaction?

Thank you.

I`ll give you the short answer: SH5 sucks, it is the worst of the series.
Its only hope now are the modders. If the modders will be kind enough to continue their hard work, then maybe, just maybe, SH5 will be a good subsim.
Check out the reviews. Neal`s review is pretty fair.
Oh and do you know you must be constanly connected to the internet to play it? Don`t even get me started on that fiasco...

WB :)

I suggestion you have a look at Neals review while you wait for people to respond.

My general comments to the game:
Its beatifull in graphics.
I love that you can walk around in the sub - makes me feel like a part of the crew.
Its a very different approach to the other games, because it really simulates you as the captain. This means no direct access to TDC f.ex.
(There are mods for this now though)
AI seems to be bugged
The game is VERY open to modding.
It only runs to 43
Only type VII's are moddeled for player use.
You need to be constantly online to play - but still single player

All in all, I think the vanilla version is NOT for you if you want to have the same level of control as you had in the previous versions, but there are not mods to fix that now.

Buy it now and play it and wait for the usual patches and mods . Then it will be the best sub game ever .
Here is a recent video someone posted of vanilla gameplay

With the mods already out it is a completely diffrent from vanilla and the 2nd patch isnt even out yet .

Thanks guys, the game is on its way to me, I guess i'll have a walk through the sub then shelve the game til I see a screenshot that is amazing and pick it up again.

pretty much its a turd, a pile of steaming dung, but with all fertilizer beautifull things can grow from it.

sh5 has lots of modability potential and looking at the sh5 mods section you can see this sad excuse for a finished game is being transformed into something that has merit.

with still a tremendous way to go nobody knows how good this thing can be after another years worth of modding but i think it will be pretty good.

so on a scale of 1-10 and 10 being a great game i say IMO its a minus 2 as released stock and a 3 to 3 1/2 with all the mods

Harsh but fair Webster.

Yep, I'd say that's about right.

I always had a weak spot for poetry, that was beautiful. :haha:

It is shocking what even serious fans of the SH series say about it now... Especially since initially everyone was throwing all warnings and earlier experiences with stock SHIV in the wind, and many even made fun of the ones with harsher critiques (the so called "whiners", by hintsight now obviously called so by the "ignorants")...

Sadly I agree that SHV should have seen another 6-12 month development time to add the missing content and years we were accustomed to from SHIII, bring the RPG element to full functionality and fruition, and to print a god damned REAL manual. I think due to its alledged potential, this game will make its impact -- after a lot of modding. Adding the DRM and its negative consequences on top, it will never be a commercial success, but one day maybe a gem in any subsimmers "modding" box. And if that is the day you also play it (legally) offline in SP, that I will buy it -- for $5! :-?

Try it and make up your own mind. I would suggest you stick with single missions at the start. There seems to be some issues with the campaign.
