View Full Version : SUBSIM's Last Man Standing SH5 contest

Ok, I have some copies of Silent Hunter 5 to pass out, I need some ideas for a contest to make it interesting. Of course, this contest is directed to the people who do not actually own SH5 so far, and would accept a copy* if it was free.

Suggestions?

What's a neat, fun-spirited, community activity for something like this?

*DRM-laden though it may be.

A forum hidden message hunt? You could edit some of your old posts with encoded messages and clues of some sort. First one to find them all and decode them to reveal the hidden message wins?

Course that's a lot of work for you. Just brainstorming.

Indeed the best option would be some sort of search/hunt for something revolving around the forum, or to make it harder, around the great ocean of Internet itself :arrgh!: add up some enigma machine ciphering maybe, and so on. Since something regarding SH5 can't be put into practice because the contest is aimed at those who don't own SH5.
Maybe we could have some sort of video/photomanipulation contest of U-boats and stuff...just like vonhesse, i'm brainstorming. or maybe we could play "go-back-in-time-to-steal-a-uboat-and-bring-it-back-"here"

Use the Enigma Machine to make a secret message.
Whoever can decode it first gets it!

You buy plane tickets for all members who does not own the game, and everyone meets at one place you choose.

Then you get a couple of guns and play Russian Roulette, last man standing wins, GO!

That's a horrendously irresponsible thing to suggest. Don't you know the carbon footprint of plane travel? A much better idea would be for everyone to stay at home and play Russain Roulette via webcam.

online game of SH3... one convoy, most tonnage wins.

That actually sounds really good:yeah:

Edit: Or you could have a actual battle.
That would be a difficult fight.

The contest needs to be fair for EVERYONE, not all own SH3... and I'm guessing it might not be that easy to get it nowadays, patch it, get used to it etc.

See who can get a celebrity to say SUBSIM and video it and put it on youtube .

How about get a listing of persons without the game (they can PM you or something) and have them take a quiz on the various Silent Hunter games, Ubisoft lore, etc.

Another fun one is have the non owners PM one of the SH5 owners and have the owners give Neal an impassioned plea on their behalf?

See who can get a celebrity to say SUBSIM and video it and put it on youtube .

I could win that one. I was a TV Director for 20 years. I'm not interested in having the game though. :)

Ask who wants it and why they should be the one to get it.
Best answer posted on these forums (judged by Neal and whoever else he wants to help him judge) wins it.
At least then you are as sure as you can be the person who gets it actually wants it and hopefully has the machine and internet connection to run it.

Personally I'd be looking at those who have supported SS over the years, whether financialy and or by other means and give due recognition.

Of course I exclude myself from the above.

Neal:

Giving away SH5 indicates you have friends to lose, right?

ANYWAY, how about a, "Most Humorous Subsim Anecdote" contest? Comical comment could be summed up in a thread that was open ONLY to people who don't have, but, "WANT" SH5, which, of course, is a whole different kettle of fish - pun intended. Entries could be voted on by existing Forum participants. Trust me: no one who currently has SH5 is going to lie and say they don't so's they can score another copy!

By the way, I'd be willing to donate my, "Experienced" copy of SH5 to the event...

Members make a "I want a Subsim SH5 game because..." sign.
Have them stand at any one of the numerous webcam locations throughout the world for a "publicized in advance" 30 minute period.

Subsim members can log on, view the "show" and vote on the person they (the members) think has the best reason.

Pro: How low will Subsim members go for a game? Advertising for Subsim. Members choice of best performance.

Con: Camera subject availability.

My response to that is, anyone who wants to tackle SH5 is going to need some experience with the SH series with all it's bugs, patches and mods.

Why not give a copy away for the one who makes a proper fully working crack to play SH5 without DRM?

suggestion 1

not sure how many copies you have but i would suggest one or two copies be given to those who have donated to this site, maybe as a raffle type deal so the amount donated doesnt matter but only that you donated to help the site.

not sure how you can be sure they didnt already buy the game or want it unless they could have a thread to "enter" to be considered.

suggestion 2

simular to suggestion 1 but open to all members and those who donated would be allowed to be in both raffles as extra consideration for donating.

The problem with trivia these days is one just has to google it.

The competition suggestion has merit; should be a game of tactics, patience, and understanding.....qualities I myself do not have ;)

How about an elimination tourney using your original sub game Neal? :hmmm:

Yeah, I feel like one of those NGOs in Somalia, trying to give away essential food (not the tastiest but certainly nourishing) and the natives won't accept it and are trying to kill me.

The natives are restless !

I feel for ya man.

It is turning into a great game, needs more work, but it should get there.
It would get there twice as fast if everyone were able to play it though.

Maybe a photo thing like you did ages ago.. where you had close up pics of old sub games and we had to pick which game they were from? They'd have to be hard pics tho.. :arrgh!:

Of course you if you sent one to me then you'd have one less to get rid of! :D

That is a very good intention...

Neal a suggestion for the contest...Offer those SH5 copies only to the last that resist with claim "no buy till online DRM is dropped" ;)

pls add me to the "no buy till online DRM is dropped" list :DL

I do not have internet connection so that sums it up for me,
the whole game. I get my Intarnjet from friends/relatives/anywhere where its free.

With your analogy I should not be able to eat at all.

What promotion of piracy? A crack for this would increase sales, as many people have problems with internet connection and seem not to care the game is half finished. I know I'd buy it if were so, even with all the problems if if had no DRM

Anyway it was a joke, didn't realise the killjoy police prowls the area.

Why not simply make it random. Make a lost of subsim members (who posted in the last 90 days or so) and asign all of them a number. Find a random number generator on the web and decide that way. PM the winner.

Or any variation on the above

Nice ideas, all. thanks. I think I'll sit on them for now, maybe I can give them out at the meeting in Sept, if there are any attendees who don't have SH5 by then.
