now Im pretty new to the computer gaming world, and please dont bash me for what im about to ask.
how does one go about editing the cgf files to get the type XXI real early in the game,
Ive played the game normaly with only dud torpedoes and fuel usage turned off for a dozen or so missions and I love it. but Im real taken by the idea of the type XXI, just wondering if one of you all could help me out here,
after I get it and get bored with it I will probably go find out how hard I can make the game. but for now I just wanna have fun.

welcome to the pack! :DL

Wreford-Brown's mod can be downloaded here:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1357

pls have a look at the readme-file.
you should have the generic mod-enabler (JSGME).

good hunting! :salute:

I guesse now would be good time to tell you all that im typing this on a intel imac, ive got windows xp installed on a seperate partition and man i have no idea what im doing with windows, heck i didnt even know i needed to download winzip to open a .rar file.
anyway any of you can give me a somewhat step by step guide on how to do this.
WOW. if this were anything to do with the mac os i would have no problem, but windows makes me feel pretty stupid and I really would love some help.

You need JSGME.
It's a Mod enabler, written and provided to us for free by JScones.
Get here
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=156898
There's good info also in that thread, and the download comes with a readme.

Basic rundown - you need to install JSGME into your SH3 folder.
Run it once, this will create a MODS folder in your SH3 folder.
Move your mod into the mods folder, then run JSGME and enable your mod.
It's dead easy to use.

You get any problems, come back here.
There's usually someone around who'll be happy to help out.
You have any problems running it on windows on a Mac, you can ask me.
I'm running SH3, SH4 and SH5 on a Mac via bootcamp.

Good luck dyslexic doggie, let us know how you get on :DL

ok, I did all that got jsgme to make a mods folder and enable the XXI mod
but the boat is still not available,
not sure what i did wrong yet, was i supposed to enable everything that was in the mod? cuz thats what i did. I will try it one at a time next to see if that works
once again thanks for all the support and info.
dyslexic doggie.
wait do i have to start with a completely new game or can i start from a previos campaign?

You need to commence a new career

Disable the XXI mod, then move it out of the MODS folder.
Then check the file structure.
I'm guessing there are too many folder levels, which will prevent the mod from enabling properly.

Just had a quick look at the XXI mod, and you have to move a particular folder into mods, not the whole thing.
See screenshot

http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/2636/graby.jpg

The Cmdr folder is for use if you are running SH3 Commander.

The way the whole mod thing works is that the folder structure has to look like this.
Modname/Data

Sometimes you'll download a mod with a double folder structure
Modname/Modname/Data

Try and enable that, and JSGME will not be able to put the files in the right place.

It is a good practice to get into the habit of unzipping your mod to a temporary folder, and double checking the folder structure before moving it to the mod folder.
This will save you headaches in the long run.

I hope that makes sense.
I know what I am trying to say, but I'm not sure I am articulating it very well.

Good luck :DL

Or this :DL
I didn't think of it.
Try this first.

I tend to look for the most complicated solution to a problem, when the simple solution is staring me right in the face :-?

wow im sure some of you think i may be a bit daft or touched by now but i still cant get the boat,
i keep reading that the mod structure must match the game file, and mine doesnt, the mod structure has a roster file and a submarine file that are not in the game structure. could this be part of the problem?

Try this:
1. Download the file to your desktop
2. Unpack the file using winrar to your desktop
3. Open up the folder you have just unpacked and copy the XXI 1939 SH3 folder inside it that sergei has indicated
4. Copy the file into your MODS folder in SH3. It should be at C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\MODS
5. Open JSGME. You should have a file in there called XXI 1939 SH3
6. Enable this file

If you start the game through SH3 Commander you'll have an option to start with the XXI. Otherwise you'll have to go to the upgrade screen but it will cost you no renown.

Ok I have modified the archive for you. So it should be easier for you to install and implement without having to worry about the extra directories.

So all you have to do is click on the link below to download it.

http://www.cybagirl.com/sh3/XXI_1939_SH3.exe

Once the file has downloaded copy it to your MODS directory which should be inside your Silent Hunter III directory and then double click on the file. It will automatically unpack the file for you so you end up with a directory inside your MODS directory called XXI 1939 SH3 you can then delete the XXI_1939_SH3.exe file if you wish.

Now run JSGME and you should see XXI 1939 SH3 listed on the left hand side of the program as shown here.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k94/CybaGirl/games/SH3/enable_a_mod.gif

Then to enable it. All you do is click on XXI 1939 SH3 to highlight it and then click on the right hand arrow to enable the mod. The name XXI 1939 SH3 will now be placed on the right hand side of the program and under the heading of Activated Mods. Which means the mod is now activated and should work for you.

From there load the game and start a new campaign. Then when you are inside the main room. Move your mouse over to the desk on the right hand side and click on it. You will then be taken to your U-Boat and the XXI should be shown on your screen.

Wow thats pretty cool, I may have to try it some time after a few more careers.

Before I new about this site and how easy mods fit into SH3, the way I got a XXI was by modifying my patrol file in documents>SH3>Data>CFG>Careers>-yourname->Patrols.

I just changed the date, gave myself alot of renown and off I went. Problem was that it was so late in the war that I had to contend with many ASW weapons. Also thats when I found out how deep a XXI can really go

dyslexic doggie

okay ill bite, how deep did you take your xxi? in meters if you can cause thats what i use.

well i'm not saying I went DEEP but since I had to use it so late in the war I had to contend with better depth charges. so, I took her to what the dail said was max then set the planes to dive and leveled off at 320m and she took it.
That was stock also, I only recently modded my game. I'd like to try that again now, lol.

Reminds me of the time I played SH4. Took a DC and could not believe how fast I sank. It was in feet, and I think it finally crushed around 1800ft

Oh yeah this is for whoever wanted the XXI http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1357 I never tried it so don't rag on me if it doesn't work, I just found it in the downloads page
