View Full Version : OBS Periscope height

Anyone else notice that the OBS periscope's maximum height is too low?

Well it's been on my mind since the beginning but I kept just blowing it off but I kept noticing that when you raise it it didn't seem like it was coming up to where it should be there in the control room. Like if you were actually standing there you'd have to bend at the knees or bend over to look through it. So last night I thought I'd see if this was the same up topside and sure enough it doesnt raise to the same height as the attack scope. About 2m less in fact.
It comes up to 1.1m above the water, and the attack scope comes to 2.24m above water. And in rough seas that one meter makes all the difference. Plus it would look right down in the control room by being at eye level instead of at your elbows.

So now what I wonder is there something that can be done to correct it to raise to the proper height? Or is it another hard coded thing.

I've also noticed that in SH5, the Obs periscope can never be completely lowered (to the point where it does not stick up significantly over the bridge when surfaced), whereas in SH3 it was possible to lower it completely. Does anyone know which is accurate historically?

Agree with the OP, I've never noticed it but seems silly if the Obs periscope can't reach the height of the attack periscope, especially since the tooltip and manual make a big deal about how the Obs scope is useful in rougher seas bla bla blah. Another ludicrious gaffe in the written documentation, of the "Crew members will be washed overseas BEWARE" variety.

Well I had a look through some files but nothing appears to have any contrl over this. Yes, both periscopes need to be able to raise to the same height. Besides the fact that in the control room it looks funny not being at eye level. Not that I actually have to stoop to view through it or anything, but still it's not as it should be, and that 1.24m difference is about what it would take to bring it to eye level, and would also have the top end where it ought to be. 2.24m above water like the attack periscope is.

Of course it can, just not with you looking through it. :) Shift-PageDown with you NOT in the Obs Scope station will fully retract it, down into the floor.

You have to leave the station to lower it

Arrr, and I do appreciate that the OBS does at least operates and is used as it should be anyway, and that it's animated and located where it should be unlike in SH3.
Yes you cannot look through it till it's fully raised, nor can you lower it while on it. Otherwise you have it drag yer head down the the floor.:88)
So just like we have seen in movies, the captain would when done slap the handles up, and say "down scope" as he stepped away from it. And being hydraulic you would want to be holding onto it.:nope:

Well I think this height thing is probably something hard coded into the workings of the model. Well beyond my means.

The observation periscope did not rise to the same height as the attack scope. The former rose about 10 feet above the conning tower superstructure, and the latter about 18 feet above the conning tower superstructure.

If you wanted the obs scope to raise as high as the attack scope.. you'd have to look through it while in the conning tower. :rotfl2:

Not really hard to fathom why it is the way it is :D

I think they mean that in the internal view the eyepiece only comes up so far above the deckplate when it seems that it should come up much higher.

Ahh ok, i think i see what he's getting at.

Yeah, the eyepiece does some to be at stomache level.

Well yeah I know what ya's mean about the actual height at the top end being a bit lower than the attack scope's is. But in this case it's a bit too much lower, and yes in the control room the eyepiece winds up at about elbow height.
