View Full Version : Victim of phantom destroyers

Another victim of phantom destroyers. U-141 where to attack a convoy, just north of britain. 1 February 1941 04:10 while submerged, silent and plotting the convoy, (4-5km away). A destroyer suddenly picked up something and started to ping like crazy. Obviously well aware of the the submarines position. Oberleutnant Harald Geue managed to escape the one and one half hour franatic bombing of three or four warships. Though he sustained heavy injuries to the bow, which completly destroyed one of the tubes.
Geue intercepted the convoy to launch a second attack and haven't been heard from since.

(The truth is that one other phantom destroyer caught attention to the submarine ~08:30. Once more the bombing was away. And U-141 was destroyed due to pressure ~08:50, at a depth of 70m trying to escape.)
Darn, I was looking forward to move to Brest and get a type VII...

I think Coke cans have better integrity than that.:O:

Oh man I hadn't spotted that.
What the hell happened out there during Patrol 8 Fader_Berg?
A bunch of elite destroyers?
A couple of ASW aircraft?
Or did the seafloor rush up to meet you at great speed during a crash dive?
The North Sea sure is shallow in places, eh? :03:

I surfaced just behind a ASW Trawler to wipe it out with my deadly flak. Been doing that for some time, just for the fun of it. Imagine my surprise when I noticed that there where another one just near by. Since I managed to sink one of them quite right away. I decided to finish what I've started. Mostly because I was so disappointed and angry of my own stupidity. It took a while and I had a feeling that it wasn't too good for my hull. *Ping, plong, dang, ding* you know... a whole lot.
I removed the feature of being able to read my HI, but got a laugh when I saw the report.
I was in Scapa Flow in November '39 in a IIA, at least 8km from any destroyers moving at one knot. I was leaving via the western approaches at 2tc when I was suddenly pinged by a V&W that had come from nowhere. About five minutes later most of Scapa security was after me. I ended up going toe to toe with them with my 20mm flak.

I'm guessing it did not end well?

I gave a good account of myself. I managed to destroy the searchlight which was trained on me, destroyed the AAA battery and began to have a go at the depth charges to try and serously damage the boat. However a 4 inch shell is not a good addition to a conning tower at 30m (as my WO discovered) or to a loaded bow topedeo tube.
Short answer= BOOM!

It sounds like you did.
I think you deserve this

Quite a bit of tonnage racked up.
Sorry you lost your boat "and life".
See you in the next (SH3) life.

~SALUTE!~ To the crew of U-141!
There aren't many subsim kaleuns out there that stick with the Type II. The fewer torpedoes... the more the challenge to make them count.
Cheers Fader_Berg!:arrgh!:

He, he... I just love it. I'm using a Type VII now for the first time in months, but it just ain't the same. I don't think I'll pull this off. I wanna get back to the ole Type II again.

The IID is a nice ride.
If only the CO2 level wouldn't rise so fast!

I haven't got that far in the war that it makes a difference. But it's one small sorry ass, so I guess it will mean trouble as air coverage grows.
