So I just saw this on gametrailers.
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-debut-sniper-ghost/64045
Looks pretty interesting. Hopefully it'll be more SIM and less action game.

I've always wanted to play Sniper: Elite, but never got around to it.

Although the trailer is quite grainy.

Seems like its an action game instead of a sim...

Spike88

I'm not familiar with the company making it.
City Interactive is their name. According to them it's going to be an FPS, but this doesn't help determine if it's more action or sim.

I would rather they skip the shooter part and concentrate on the sniping. Otherwise it will probably be a so so shooter and so so sniper game at best.

OT: Spike88, where'd you get that Playstation Network sig?

Spike88
04-04-10, 03:58 PM
It's the official playstation one. I forgot where I got it from. It actually isn't up to date, but that's because I had to scrap the code that allowed it to update, since the forums wouldn't recognize it.

Here's a new trailer.

I think I'll wait until reviews come in before I choose on whether or not I get it. Kinda looks like a call of duty 4 sniper mission rip off.

Edit: I guess a link to the trailer would be nice.

Yeah, doesn't look to promising. Imho a sniper game needs the ability to adjust scope for range and wind conditions. Without that, not even gonna take it seriously. :-?

Doesn't look too bad (except for the slow down thing, but you can always choose not to use it). Good thing they have the bullet fly thingy from Sniper Elite in it. Ragdolls sucked, why can't they just make the bodies collapse instead of them flying 10 meters into the air. :nope:

Spike88

It would be awesome if it was like DCS: Black Shark in the way that it could be played as a straight up simulation, or as an action oriented game.

Any idea on target platforms? If it's released for 360/ps3, you can be 99% sure there's not going to be any simulation whatsoever. (controller issue; not enough buttons)

Looking at the trailers, it's just point and shoot, maybe little deflection if target is moving, no sign of bulletdrop. Range seems to be limited as well; so much so he might as well be using an assault rifle. :nope:

Im pretty sure its a console game. hence the aiming thing.

Oh, man, if you like sniper-games you absolutely HAVE TO get Sniper: Elite.
In my opinion, and despite it's age, it is still, at least for me, the pinnacle of the sniper themed games.

I can't say about Win 7 though.

Of course it will, it would be well beyond strange (and a bad business call) to not make a game compatible with the OS most people will be using in a short time.

I believe they talked about Sniper Elite, as there shouldn't be any reason to ask what comes to new games.

Anyhow this one seems awfully arcadish with all the breath-o-meters, stealth meters and slowed down time. Maybe a nice shooter, but other than that it doesn't look very promising.

I very much doubt there would be that big market for simulator-ish sniper game, like with other sims. :hmmm:

Oh yeah.

Crawl 2km through jungle, dig hole, cover with camo net, wait 3 days for target, adjust scope for wind and Coriolis effect, pull trigger, crawl another 2km through jungle, escape to air lift.

All at 1 x TC of course.:yeah:

Sniper Elite is a good but old game. Should run under most OS with the right conditions. This thread made me want to play it again, so I did and now I'm stuck modding the blasted thing to use more up to date graphics.

Never knew the thing can be modded. :o

:haha: Yeah.

You need a decompresser for the *.pc files (the level files in the environment folder) and then Game Extractor will fully extract all *.dds and *.wav files from the archive.

The *.pc files are an ASURA format compressed archive. To decompress them you need a program called asurauncmp (dos command file) and then Game Extractor.

TBH, I always thought it was unmoddable but there was no way I was playing this game in 1080p with those graphics.:D

'Vietnam Line of Site' was my first sniper game more based on stealth than anything else the AI snipers were cheats the kind of game where they could see you but you couldn't see them cause of the fog or they didn't show up on the screen till you got within range. But you were always in range for them to snipe you. :damn:

Is it really that good? What put me off from ingame pictures ive seen is it looked to me you play the game in 3rd person. Do we have an option to change to first person. Is it realistic enough or will i just end up putting the sniper rifle away and grabbing me trusty machine gun :haha:

Dowly
05-05-10, 03:53 AM
Sniper Elite has few good missions, sadly, the others are more close quarters combat missions than sniping.

The game is in 3rd person only.

Realism goes as far as windage/bullet drop/fatigue. No sight adjust, so it's all mils.

I guess it's praised as much as it is, because it really doesn't have much competition. :hmmm:

Sniper Elite is worth a go imo. It has its foibles, but there's some really sweet moments if you take the time to set up a shot  using ambient sounds to hide your gunshots, distracting enemies and 'seven at one blow' moments.
If it's going cheap grab it.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior Demo out now.
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1812/Sniper:_Ghost_Warrior_Demo.html

EDIT:

demo didn't work for me... missing DX .dll
downloaded d3dx9_39.dll and xapofx1_1.dll an put in games root directory and it worked, but without any sound.
apparently early versions of DX9c don't have certain .dll's and as the demo doesn't seem to install any dx components, go figure.

NOT a good start as far as I'm concerned... honestly, having to mod a demo to get it to work (I know that's stretching it a bit).

Looks like you'll have to make sure you have the latest release of DX9c, all 90-something mb of it, first.

For what it was sniper elite was pretty good. For me the first real sniping games were the old delta force games (1-3)

Sniper elite was good enough but no where it was a very good game.

For sniping experience I'd recommend ArmA 2. Seriously.

Ok, now that I've stopped laughing, crying and doing both at the same time, here's a list of what is wrong with the game after 1 level.

- Cover system is total BS, enemies can see you prone THROUGH foliage.
- No speed control like in SE
- Spelling mistakes
- Enemy animations are bugged quite often (not unheard off to see someone shoot 90degrees to the wrong direction and you still get hit), cutscene animations are pretty stupid too
- No head-splits-open gore like in SE
- Did I mention the enemy AI yet? Example: You and your spotter are in prone position, wearing ghillie suits and using silenced rifles yet every enemy in the whole complex knows where you are. :shifty:
- Tunnel map(s)

That's all for now.

PS. Ow and this was all on 'easy' difficulty. :haha::wah:

Sounds bad Dowly. Thanks for having the courage to test buy it for us :O:
If anyone who likes to snipe and hasn't brought ArmA 2 then I'd say go get it.

One thing the game engine is not well optimized though it runs okay on my 3 year old system getting 20-30s fps. Not great but decently playable.

You're absolutely right, Dowly. There's a ton wrong with this game. What most bothers me from your list is the cover system. It just doesn't work. The game makes you feel exposed when you're hiding, motionless, in tall grass. Going along with that is the fact that enemies can see you far before you can, even if you're crouching around in bushes and shadows.

But in addition to your list, I would like to add the fact that the difficulty can be adjusted to only easy, medium, or hard. No tweaking. That was something that I had hoped would make it into the full game since medium still includes the little red circle that shows exactly where the bullet is going to hit.

On the brighter side, performance is very nice. Better than I thought it would be.

Yes, it runs well and doesn't look that bad overall. Just shame the gameplay is poo.

I 100% agree with Dowly. Just finished the game. I've got to admit, some parts of the game were quite entertaining but overall it's just another shooter dressed up as 'sniper game.'
While the 'sniping' missions have some sense to it, when game switches to "CoD mode" it gets really bad. Also all enemies move on preset paths and their behavior is predetermined so the replay value is pretty much non-existent.
Shame, because the graphics and the terrain structure has a lot of potential... :nope:
